STATE OF CALIFORNIA – State and local planning for medical surge includes acquisition of sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare worker, along with the order for 10,000 ventilators for COVID patients. In an address on March 30, Governor Newsome urged Californians to “take responsibility and take ownership” to get through this pandemic. There was a surge of patients in hospitals over the preceding four days in California, rising from 746 up to 1,432 and those requiring Intensive Care Unit help from 200 up to 597. California saw an increase of 19% overnight, he stated, further emphasizing the need for the protective measures we have already put in place.

FEDERAL – Hospital Ship Comfort went to New York City and Hospital Ship Mercy was sent to California to the Port of Los Angeles and will see non-COVID patients. Several large companies have begun to produce ventilators for COVID patients (GM, Ford, Dyson, GE Healthcare). The strategic national stockpile is filling requests for medical supplies and personal protective equipment nationwide. Supplies are prioritized and sent out where appropriate when requested by states including respirators, surgical masks and gowns, face shields, coveralls and gloves. FEMA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services work together to coordinate the distribution of supplies.

As of March 29, 2020 California State Parks have closed vehicle access to its 280 state parks to prevent the spread of illness. The public is reminded to adhere to the following guidance:

.

    • Stay close to home when going outdoors.
