Mendocino County Tax Collector Explains Why Property Taxes Still Due April 10, Offers Options
Press release from the Mendocino County Tax Collector:
As Mendocino County Tax Collector, I understand and share in the public’s anxiety and concern about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
So the public is aware, County Tax Collectors cannot change the April 10 deadline for the second Installment of secured property taxes because the delinquency date of Friday, April 10, 2020 is established by State law. Furthermore, critical County services, such as emergency response, public health, schools and other local financial obligations are dependent on these scheduled revenues.
However, the County does have authority to waive penalties, costs, or other charges resulting from tax delinquency due to reasonable cause and circumstances related to this crisis. To obtain the Request for Penalty Cancellation form please visit https://www.mendocinocounty.
org/ttcforms. Please read the instructions for this process carefully. Due to this crisis, the County Administration Building is closed to the public. All taxes, assessments, penalties, fines or fees must be remitted as follows:
- Mailed through the US Postal Service;
- Electronically online or by phone (see below for more information); or
- Drop box in front of the County Administration Building.
- Cash must be converted to money orders or cashiers checks.
- Full staffing will be available by telephone to deal with urgent matters.
Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. Thank you in advance for your cooperation during this crisis!

To be clear, your job may be nonessential, but their income is.
The County could issue a blanket waiver of penalties during this most difficult time. They need to pull their heads out!
They won’t because their lavish salaries, vacations, absurd “retirements” (from what?) and medical coverage depends on confiscating your resources. Never forget, all taxes are collected under threat of confiscation or imprisonment. Don’t believe me, tell the IRS to piss off and see where you land.
Yet, they refuse to give their Supplemental Tax refunds to those who earned it. They are a year overdue on their checks.
The second paragraph says “pubic” when I believe public is the correct word!
Nice find lizard. I missed that myself. I could add a good comment, but Kym would probably drop the axe on me. Keep up the good reading. Let us know when a word or comment is screwed up.
Fixed
Sure, a blanket waiver is important as there are real hardships due to the “hoax” pandemic
FYI- the penalty cancellation is only good through the end of April
this pandemic isn’t going to be over by then
mendocino and humboldt counties are primarily cash economies
I went to pay my taxes yesterday, and there was someone there who came outside and said we are not allowed to come into the building to pay the taxes for cannabis or property taxes.
why not just take the payment there and had out a receipt?
they were nice enough and said to go to the post office or wall mart to get money orders or just go to the bank and deposit money into a checking account
how is that safer?
exposure is probably less there than in line at the post office or mall wart
banks are still open and accepting cash deposits
are the county employees more important than the tax payers who make their job possible in the first place?
the county could easily set up a payment station there that is safe in terms of accepting cash (as its basically in-front of the sheriffs office) and safe from a public health standpoint.
they county is well aware that cannabis business and many people who have cannabis businesses are not able to get bank accounts
this isn’t rocket science folks

A rational voice in an irrational time.
“Humanity has a long history of falling into slavery when faced by the choice of abiding by the rules set by an oppressor or entering into a struggle to break-free from such an oppressor. Today ‘the oppressor’ is barely visible because it comes in the guise of a deceptive form of indoctrination and convenience, when once it came with a sword or a gun. The key form of oppression of the 21st century is shaping up to come in the form of a technology which does our thinking for us, thereby rendering us dependent and to an increasing degree, under the control of a non human entity.”
STOP PAYING ALL BILLS NOW!!
shouldn’t have to tell anyone this but please be smart peeps and save your money for food, medicine, etc. this no time to give money to government.. they being bailed out.. u are not.
Read an article online two days ago about how Sacramento is putting the counties of California under pressure to suspend property taxes because of the pandemic. How the counties are going rogue on it but the lawmakers in sac are going to be discussing in some upcoming meeting about making it mandatory. That’s probably why Humboldt and now mendocino have been running ads on here trying to bleed every last penny before this happens!!!!!!
