SoHum Schools Remain Open But Alert to Possibly Needing Changes Because of the Novel Coronavirus Outbreak

The Southern Humboldt Unified School District (SHUSD)Press release from the Southern Humboldt Unified School District:

March 13, 2020

Dear Southern Humboldt Families,

On March 11, Superintendent Don Boyd along with over 45 District Superintendents, educators, health care professionals, and staff met at the Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) Sequoia Conference Center with Public Health Director, Michele Stephens, and Public Health Officer, Dr. Teresa Frankovich, to discuss Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19) as related to the education of our children and the health and safety of our community.

A critical outcome for this convening was to develop and create processes for consistent and informed decision‐making with the safety of students remaining top priority. Delivery of service for students, families, employees, and community was also discussed.

At this point in time, there is no evidence of community transmission of COVID‐19 in Humboldt County. Currently there is no need for closure or quarantine of schools in Humboldt County, we are diligently monitoring updates and nonetheless we are preparing as if this may take place. A planning committee was formed to share best practices, make recommendations, and to research topics to help inform school district decisions.

Currently, some school‐related events and activities have been cancelled due to state guidelines and with consideration to the size, number of anticipated attendees, and physical location. SHUSD and HCOE are notifying stakeholders and the community as these decisions are made.

Currently the Leprechaun Chase scheduled for March 14 is postponed until further notice.

The district is aware that this is a swiftly evolving situation, and the 24‐hour news and social media cycles have contributed to our collective concerns and stress. Please trust that we will make all attempts to keep you informed and updated as the situation develops and decisions are made.

Should the virus make its way into one of our schools, the decision to close a campus and/or quarantine the affected persons will be led by county public health officials. While we hope for the best, we are actively preparing for various scenarios that could occur.

For up‐to‐date information regarding the novel coronavirus, see:

I want to thank all of you for your continued partnership to help ensure the health and welfare of our students and community.

Sincerely,

Don Boyd, Superintendent

Southern Humboldt Unified School District

I’m sorry the Boyd in charge has NOTHING to do with the Boyd that was a janitor for many good years. Get your facts straight before slandering any one.
Also the governor has said schools will still get their $$ in the event of closures.

Apologies community. With all sencereity, we need to take this very seriously.
We have a very resilient community and are better prepared than most. Our elderly are the most at risk. If u haven’t prepared yet, prepare now.

I don’t understand this decision. Let’s learn from the mistakes of our Italian friends. It’s not going to do any good to close the schools once there is “evidence of community transmission.” It is too late, then.

It’s better to have LESS sick people than MORE sick people. Get it?

Isn’t there a mandatory number of days that schoolsmust be open? If closed now, they must continue longer onto summer.

Then what are the standards for unemployment insurance and leave that the Governor just issued? Maybe without evidence of the illness in the area, those thing don’t kick into play even though parents have to stay home or arrange child care?

This is a very hard decision to make.

I think if a school closed for an extended time the students ‘hours of education’ wil be off set by homeschooling.

Today’s Honolulu Star Advertiser online news publication states 32 people have been tested for Corona Virus. Considering Hawaii is a transport hub for air travel with people coming from all over the world for vacation or passing through for other destinations, one might think that more active testing of sick people or screening at the airport might be a good idea. Past articles refer to difficulties with getting tests and procedural attitudes that hopefully won’t be looked back at as inadequate measures to slow the spread of this illness.

This British doctor has been a best info source from the very beginning.  This video is s very good summary of our real situation, and practical considerations.  Very important!
Please share so others can understand the critical importance of changing social behaviour asap in order to spare the vulnerable and to delay the peak period to allow further time to prepare.

And mental attitude counts. Stay positive and informed.

Shouldn’t this decision be made by the people who are actually going to be at the school (and their parents)? Does Don Boyd even show up for work anymore or is he just drawing a fat paycheck to stay home? When was the last time the Principal actually earned a day’s pay? She hasn’t been there for months.

Wow. I sure hope he figures out that there is reason to shut the schools NOW. There is evidence the virus is asymptomatic for up to two weeks prior to symptoms, and that you can transmit it that whole time.

we just need to flatten the curve. how many ventilators do we have? from what I have observed we normally fly patients out of the area for extreme illness like this. is that even an option anymore?

Shit’s real for real. I was at Stanford Hosp yesterday for a scheduled apmt. They triage you before you even walk in, all staff was in hazmat type suits. Once cleared you wait in a common staging area. Once inside the office, the docs are also all wearing hazmat type suits. They’ve got tents set up and are waiting for it . It looks like a movie set. From the numbers they’ve seen they expect an explosion in about 2 weeks.

*Many States with single digit cases have shut down their schools

Only 100 clean rooms in the bay area that is it .only 45 thousand across the us . And ventilators the country has 65 thousand that’s it time to decide who lives and dies. KEEP YOUR KIDS HOME NATIONAL EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED . NOT ONE PERSON FROM THE SCHOOL IS QUALIFIED TO MAKE THIS CALL ABOUT YOUR CHILDRENS HEALTH AND SAFTEY

I pulled my daughter out of Redway school last week and am pulling my other 2 kids out of Miranda next week. I’m not waiting for school to close. By then…it will be too late. I am following my motherly survival instincts to protect my young. I suggest everone else does the same and don’t wait for someone else to tell you what to do.

Better safe than sorry, keeps the kids at home and help them with their lessons. All it needs is just one case, and it is off and running. A very poor move by Don Boyd in my opinion.

Teach your children proper hygiene and how to protect themselves from illness, not panic and keep them out of school then go to the crowded grocery stores to stock up.. If they’re going to be out of school they should at least have assignments so they’re not missing their school credit. I wonder which is more concerning the busy coffee shop, gas station, grocery store or the school??Yes it’s a serious respiratory virus, the majority affected are elderly with medical conditions. elderly people break a bone and develop infections that kill them. Their immune system is weak, there are many other viruses circling among us that are pretty serious and spread easily because of negligence, don’t see people up in arms about it. The media is a great way to get people in a panic, maybe you’ve noticed among other matters. Take your vitamins& supplements, eat healthy, get rest, clean up your surroundings and your person, stop visiting your sick friends or visiting your friends when your sick. Use some common sense…

CDC recommends closing schools for 8 weeks. So Hum Superintendent and County Health Officials are ignoring this and think they know better. Don Boyd and Pubic Health Officer Frankovich are idiot’s.
