College of the Redwoods Halts Sports and HSU Athletics Goes “Fanless”

Feature Icon College of the Redwoods (CR)This is a press release from College of the Redwoods:

CR Suspends All Spring Sports

In the continued effort to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and recommendations from state health officials, College of the Redwoods is taking the precautionary steps to suspend all spring sports at this time.

Although there are still no known cases of COVID-19 on any district campuses, and while Humboldt County has not seen community spread, it has occurred in nearby counties, and we have decided that the travel inherent to the sports season constitutes an unnecessary risk. We will continue to follow health guidelines and will provide updates to the student athletes through their coaching staff.

Updates provided by the CCCAA and our Golden Valley Conference Commissioner regarding eligibility status of student athlete participation will be distributed when they become available.

And Humboldt State University cancels all events expected to have over 150 participants until further. Sports will be played with empty bleachers:

HSU Guidelines on Large Events

Humboldt State University acknowledges its important role in the North Coast in bringing thought-leaders, visitors, artists, musicians, and entertainers to campus and the local community. In an effort to mitigate the possible spread of COVID-19, HSU continues to assess the impact of hosting large events on campus.

There is no one response that works for all events. HSU understands that each event is different.

HSU leadership, consistent with CSU guidelines and guidance from local health officials, continues to assess events and their relationship to HSU’s core mission. This ongoing assessment looks at event outcomes and whether postponement or other alternative modalities (such as virtual) can be used, participants’ ability to travel, participants’ relationship to high-risk areas or populations, local health standards, size of the event, fiscal and opportunity costs related to the event, and any other unique campus contexts that warrant consideration.

Subject to change, effective Saturday, March 14 until Friday, April 17 all on-campus large events (greater than 150 attendees) are suspended. Event planners will be asked to cancel, postpone, or use an alternative modality (virtual). Events after April 17 will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with additional information and campus decisions made as more information becomes available.

All HSU-sponsored athletic events are scheduled to continue. However, based on strong guidance from CCAA, events will now be “fan-less,” meaning there should be no fans at the events and only essential personnel are permitted for the event.

The campus continues to assess the most appropriate guidelines for smaller events, and will communicate new guidelines when available.

This is a difficult decision, but the University asks the community and event planners to support these efforts in trying to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Pretty much. My main concern on this event since January has primarily been the response to it. Unfortunately, it looks like my concerns are playing out.

Rod, Fanof, Coffee. Visit the original page.

It has so many embedded links it would make a 40′ chain seem week.

South Korea has tested more than 230,000 people for free and set up drive-thru testing weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the US vice president and the Health and Human Services secretary said this week they don’t know how many Americans have been tested. But members of both parties say there aren’t nearly enough tests available.

There are a few factors for the difference in responses, said Dr. Rob Davidson, an emergency room doctor and executive director of the Committee to Protect Medicare.

“The public health infrastructure and the response to outbreaks and the National Security Council have been gutted by this administration,” Davidson said.

Two years ago, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped funding epidemic prevention activities in 39 countries, including China, after the Trump administration refused to reallocate money to a program that started during the government’s response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

At that time, former CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said the move “would significantly increase the chance an epidemic will spread without our knowledge and endanger lives in our country and around the world.”

Another factor involves the tests themselves — including malfunctions, shortages and delays in availability.

In the first few weeks of coronavirus in the US, the CDC was the only facility in the country that could confirm test results.

“We had the ability about five weeks ago to use a WHO — World Health Organization — approved test that’s been used in other countries that was available, and that was rejected so we could use a test that was developed here,” Davidson said.

After test kits were later sent across the country, some were flawed. “So they go back to the drawing board,” Davidson said. “It put us behind by about four or five weeks.”

Or not, once you stop beating CNNs drum for them-

“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau doesn’t need to be tested for COVID-19 — even though his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, was diagnosed with the disease — if he isn’t showing any symptoms, experts say.

“Certainly for people asymptomatic, we do not recommend testing,” said Colin Lee, a specialist in public health and infectious disease. “But I could certainly see that people in position of power may want testing. And that might happen. But it’s certainly not the medical and public health recommendation.””

So you’re happy with our testing abilities for the last weeks?

Pence promised 1.5 million tests a while ago.

Where are they?

Rod, Coffee and Fanof:

This article is just for you. Please turn off the misinformational opinion based Trump TV.

How Fox News misled viewers about the coronavirus

“If you are over the mass hysteria, if you’re over politicizing and weaponizing of the coronavirus, you are not alone,” Sean Hannity, the highest-rated host on Fox News, assured the network’s prime time audience this week.

Indeed, over the past several weeks, top hosts and personalities on the conservative cable news network downplayed concerns about the virus, baselessly accusing credible news organizations of overhyping the crisis to hurt Trump politically.

At other times, Fox News hosts and personalities pointed to the death toll of the seasonal flu, misleading the network’s audience into thinking that the coronavirus was receiving more attention because it is novel, while the flu in fact kills more Americans and was, thus, more dangerous and cause for alarm.

Every time Trump and Covid 19 are used in a story it is political hackery. Under our Constitution Trump (and every President) has a limit on his power (thankfully). He can close our borders, but domestic responses are in the hands of the states. We plead and plead for our government to “do more” but then regret it when they do “do more and more and more.”

Remember, the power of Our government is derived from the People and our consent. We need to take responsibility for ourselves and stop abdication to Our government. Once we give away Our power it will never be given back.

The president also slashed the CDC budget and used the bully pulpit to dismiss the danger of the virus, until he no longer could. He’s the primary cause behind the severely mixed messaging over Covid.

Yeah, imagine that.

We aren’t testing people during a real pandemic, and we look for reasons why.

And there are black and white answers.

And you FOX viewers are denying everything.

That’s what Italians did.

The reality is that FOX and its viewers are going to be THE reason why we are put into lockdown/martial law to slow the spread of Covid, however it’ll be too late.

And Trump will still be your hero.

Good job guys.

You don’t need to.

Hannity is also on the radio.

And the internet.

The memes and tropes of the bunch are spread far and wide, no one needs a tv.

Shame on all of you people ignoring the credible news and information right now.

My opinion of myself is holding strong.

I called the DOW numbers to a T at a 2 week range to a T.

If you had listened, you could’ve liquidated positions for profits and re-purchased in the coming lows.

I’m running at 100% confidence.

My information dept. is fine.

Your pushing ignorance as policy.

It’s at the opposite extreme end of the spectrum where panic resides.

I’m in the middle: aware.

Keep ignoring, it might not just be your money you lose.

Trump to Declare National Emergency to Speed Virus Response

March 13, 2020, 8:35 a.m. PDT
(Bloomberg) — President Donald Trump plans to declare a national emergency on Friday over the coronavirus outbreak, invoking the Stafford Act to open the door to more federal aid for states and municipalities, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Trump is under increasing pressure to act as governors and mayors nationwide step up actions to mitigate the spread, closing schools and canceling public events. The president said he will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. in Washington.

The move would allow the government to martial additional resources to combat the virus, and also marks a symbolic turning point for the president, who has repeatedly compared the coronavirus to the seasonal flu and insisted that his administration had the outbreak under control.

Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act

Title VII: Miscellaneous
Title VII gives the President the authority to determine any rule or regulation that may be necessary to carry out the powers that he is given in the Act. This can be either through a federal agency, or any other means the President sees fit.

A little information on testing equipment(new and improved):

[quote]
The cobas 8800 system can test patients about 10 times faster than Roche’s existing test for the coronavirus, which runs on its MagNA Pure 24 and the LightCycler 480 devices. While those instruments require more human attention, there are more of them in labs and hospitals around the world. They’ll continue to play a crucial role in testing people, especially outside the U.S., Schinecker said.

The cobas 6800/8800 instruments provide test results within four hours. Roche can provide millions of tests every month for the systems and is “going to the limits of its production capacity,” the company said. Roche declined to comment on pricing for the tests.

The tests analyze nucleic acids extracted from patients’ saliva or mucus, and compare them against sequences found in coronavirus strains, including SARS and the one that emerged in Wuhan, China.
