Arcata High Athlete Diagnosed With Serious Illness Passed Away

An Arcata High School athlete rushed to UCSF and eventually diagnosed with a form of bacterial meningitis has died. A GoFundMe page for his family posted an update this evening saying, “It is with great sadness that at 5:30 this afternoon our beloved Everett passed away peacefully and in a way Everett would have wanted.”

Everett Halikas had a form of bacterial meningitis known as meningococcal disease. The County Department of Health and Human Services earlier today advised parents at Arcata High in a press release “to be alert for signs of meningococcal disease.” But, they said, “[T]he risk of another student becoming ill is extremely low.”

To calm fears and answer questions that are concerning the community, Dr. Teresa Frankovich, Humboldt County’s Public Health Officer, spoke to us this afternoon. “We understand the concerns in the community,” she said.

She told us that she is recommending that those who had very close contact with people who have this disease–particularly those who share a household or “share oral secretions” usually by sharing drinks, foods, kisses or cigarettes–should consult their doctor and discuss taking an antibiotic medicine with their doctor.

If the contact with the person carrying the disease which is also known as Neisseria meningitidis is more than 14 days old though, she said not to be concerned about it.

She responded to concerns some parents expressed about their child getting the illness from the school by stating, “Unlike some illnesses, we really aren’t concerned with surfaces.” She reiterated that “sharing oral secretions” was the main concern. She did caution though, “We do sometimes look at sports teams. We do take that into consideration…[Parents] can talk to their health care provider or they can call us.”

Because of rumors spreading through the community, Frankovich wanted to assure us that “this child has a diagnosis that is unrelated to COVID-19. This is a bacteria not a virus.”

When asked about another child who got seriously ill in the last month that people has expressed concerns about believing this might be a pattern, she said said should couldn’t for privacy reasons discuss in depth individual cases.  However, she stated firmly, “There is no second case relationship to this case. This is a reportable disease. If there is another case of Neisseria meningitidis, I would know and I have no concerns at this time.”

Frankovich urged parents to think about vaccinating. “Meningococcal disease is a preventable disease. It is a very preventable illness…Remind parents that the opportunity is there to vaccinate.”

When asked if she knew where the student had contracted the disease, she said there’s been no identified source.

“We are all thinking about this family,” she said in an interview which occurred early this afternoon. “The family has requested that they be given privacy.”

The update on Everett Halikas’ GoFundMe stated,

Everett’s family would like to thank family, friends, and the community, for the overwhelming outpouring of support, well-wishes, and prayer during this incredibly difficult time. It means so much to Everett’s entire family that so many people cared about him and rallied for him, continuing to pray for a miracle.

Everett’s family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to everyone from Humboldt County and around the nation who have contributed to Everett’s Go Fund Me account. The response has been truly inspiring and is a powerful testament to the amazing quality of Everett’s spirit and character.

But vaccines are evil! …

As sad as this is, hopefully it will help prod parents into getting their children vaccinated against this and all the other preventable diseases we have vaccines for.

I know people whose kids ended up in this same situation BECAUSE of a vaccine. Its not cut and dry.

Is it right that some people’s kids should be killed or have lifelong physical ailments so that others live? I mean thats basically whats happening is we vaccinate all and consider the kids who die from vaccines collateral damage???

Whose kids? A case of someone contracting this disease through a vaccination would be reported to the public health department and likely published in at least one journal. Citation?

Most children DO NOT DIE from vaccines or become autistic! Where are these “people you know?” Less than 1% could have perhaps life long seizures while most grow out of them which is very common but not life threatening! And that less than 1% does matter, none of us would choose that for our children, however what gives us the right to say no to vaccines and play God with our child’s life! I was 5 when I contracted German measles and came very close to dying (I’m now 60) no child deserves to go through that! I actually wanted to offer my prayers to this family, May the lord bless them all! Our hearts and prayers are with you all!

I know when my daughter went to college in the early 2000’s our doctor recommended the Meningococcal vaccine. The college had recommended it but it was not a requirement. I asked her would you have your daughter get it and she said “absolutely!” Dorm life and sports teams are often more affected due to the time you live in close quarters & possibly of secretions being greater. So sad. Prayers to the family and friends.

I mean, I just gave my kid that vaccine in 7th grade. He’s 17 now. Does that mean he’s no longer immunized? So scary! R.I.P. Sweet boy… heart broken…

Meningococcal Vaccination: What Everyone Should Know

(quote)
How Well Do These Vaccines Work?
Summary
Vaccines that help protect against meningococcal disease work well, but cannot prevent all cases.

As part of the licensure process, MenACWY and MenB vaccines showed that they produce an immune response. This immune response suggests the vaccines provide protection, but data are limited on how well they work. Since meningococcal disease is uncommon, many people need to get these vaccines in order to measure their effectiveness.

Available data suggest that protection from MenACWY vaccines decreases in many teens within 5 years. Getting the 16-year-old booster dose is critical to maintaining protection when teens are most at risk for meningococcal disease. Available data on MenB vaccines suggest that protective antibodies also decrease quickly (within 1 to 2 years) after vaccination.

In Depth
Today, meningococcal disease is at a historic low in the United States. Rates of meningococcal disease have been declining in the United States since the 1990s. Much of the decline occurred before the routine use of MenACWY vaccines. In addition, serogroup B meningococcal disease declined even though MenB vaccines were not available until the end of 2014.

CDC first recommended preteens and teens get a MenACWY vaccine in 2005. Since then, rates of meningococcal disease in teens caused by serogroups C, Y, and W has decreased by over 90%. This is a larger percent decline than seen in other groups for which CDC does not recommend routine MenACWY vaccination. These data suggest MenACWY vaccines provide protection to those vaccinated, but probably not to the larger, unvaccinated community (herd immunity). Experts also believe MenB vaccines do not provide protection to unvaccinated people through herd immunity.

This is sad !!!! My little sister passed away from this and she was only 15 years old . The doctors in Oakland Children’s hospital had to treat us just to be safe . It wasn’t till years later that my older sister caught it and was very ill but she recovered. People really need to know that this is very serious condition. May he rest easy now and to the family I send healing thoughts

My ex got the same disease from a unwashed cantaloupe. There was even a cantaloupe picker down in the hospital in the city who had the same exact symptoms. The melons and the fruit we get are not washed and you’re exposing yourself to everybody else’s disgusting germs if you don’t wash them. Even most restaurants don’t wash them pretty scary
