State and Federal Response Lacks Places to Quarantine COVID-19 as Pandemic Evolves

A reader sent Redheaded Blackbelt a link to a story on the CalMatters website describing the Governor’s response to people who may have the illness as they return from travel abroad. The story’s title is Governor: Coronovirus Changing “by the As the number of cases and urgency around the coronavirus increases, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that California is on high alert and working closely with the federal government on the return of Americans from overseas.” in California and is written by Ana B Ibarra.
The report outlines the evolving response and a sense of confusion and lack of preparation for such an outbreak. Ibarra reports that earlier this month, Americans that repatriated from Wuhan were quarantined at Travis Air Force Base until their 14 day incubation period, however now that policy has changed. She writes,
“People at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County, who test positive for the virus can’t stay at the base because there is no place for them to be properly isolated. Instead they are being sent to hospitals in Northern California counties, including Napa, Contra Costa and Sonoma, even if they’re not showing symptoms. There, they are placed in isolation in specialized rooms until they are cleared from infection.”

The fact is that the local hospitals simply don’t have the staffing to cover the beds they have. A friend recovering from surgery last week had to spend time recovering in the I.C.U because they couldn’t find a room for him. The staff shortages are affecting all the hospitals in the county. The local ability to admit and isolate patients just doesn’t exist.It is not about the number of beds it’s not having the providers to service them. Been a problem since at least the 90s.
I don’t believe you know anything about this subject, outside of Garberville and how it was 10 years ago, but, in general, if Humboldt County facilities paid decent salaries, they would get staff.
Mad River Hospital pays about 40% less than a hospital in, say, Redding, and St Josephs wouldn’t hire adequate staff under any conditions! St Joseph’s salaries are not competitive, and conditions there, are awful…
At St Josephs Fortuna I was working with a woman who was running out to the parking lot 30 minutes or more, and then coming back much happier! She was SO on drugs, and crazy besides! I quit. Screw that!
At Jerold Phelps Hospital, salaries are low, Administrators are abusive, and staff comes and goes through a revolving door… They hire and fire like you change your socks, and the HR gal is unusually poor… They can’t remember a time when they had enough patients to pay their bills, they can’t even do their billing competently! Patients come in the ER, give a phony address, get services, and leave without paying a dime, ever. Phelps Hospital is the most crooked, incompetently operated facility I can even think of! Who the heck would want to work there? They have such a bad reputation, that they post the same positions continuously! Also, if they have an employee, and they locate someone else who offers to work for a dollar less an hour, JPH Admin will fire the incumbent and hire the newbie, every time!
Even in Mendo, at Adventist Willits and Ukiah Med Ctr, they pay decent, but mistreat and lie to their staff, and, they can’t even keep managers, since it’s so crazily operated! One of their Cardiologists actually went nuts and shot his neighbor’s dogs in their pens, up in Potter Valley! Honest, I couldn’t make this stuff up! Dr Meyers is still working there, last I heard…
There is nothing for it, if you need hospitalization on the North Coast, you are screwed! Get a Helicopter Ambo Card and get TF out!

More like 25 years ago. I do know something about it. Its about more than salary. Its about shopping and schools and culture. We had some M.D. s who seemed interested but the wives and families, not so much. Be thankful for what you have.
We have been lucky. The healthcare district has been pronounced doomed for the last 30 years. We are still here. And if your heart starts to go apeshit I can tell you that you’ll be glad you won’t have a long ride to Fortuna.

Yes, there is no culture, but it’s the drugs, the creepy guys in the street, the panoply of idiots on the board and in the Administration, the routinely incompetent, the nepotism and the dishonesty that cooks the goose! The horrible old physical plant doesn’t help, and the total lack of a decent place to live, is just the icing on the cupcake…
I love SoHum, but I would never consume medical care there! If I get COVID-19, I hope it’s when I am out of town…
I live in an isolated and very quiet place now, but there are no doctors or decent medical facilities nearby to my neighborhood either. I would hope to get to UCDMC or even Kaiser Vacaville, but, we’ll just have to see… An UBER to Alta Bates please!

Ms, whatever her name is this year, has memory issues, and appears to be in a nasty mood from having to fill the same job over and over 27 times in 3-4 years, and, hospital HR people hate professional staff, since the professionals all make more money than the HR staff… Yes, she is a typical HR Bully… She needs a drug-test too!
Abusive Administrators, like the people they have at JPH, make working in a small hospital very unpleasant. If my job makes me unhappy, I just find a different one! You can too!
I’m not disgruntled, I just don’t work for silly busted backstreet hospitals, and I hope nobody makes the mistake of being a patient there… And I won’t be a patient where the staff are dope-smokers.

Not angry, a bit. If you work in healthcare, and you’ve never been fired, you’re probably not being paid much… They only fire the well paid staff!
Seems like isolating people at home isn’t such a bad idea. Cramming people who are infected in with people who aren’t on an air force base is a great way to keep the virus going, and isolating mildly symptomatic people in hospitals where people come and go constantly and there are lots of medically fragile people and lots of direct contact with healthcare staff isn’t going to work well, plus they’re going to need the space for people who are critically ill.
The problem with isolating people at home is that people are idiots. If you isolate 30 people at home at least 10 are going to go to the coffee shop at some point.
I agree, is the doable option.

This is not the time to be thinking about the county’s preparations, nor the country’s for that matter. Don’t wait for the county or hospitals to take care. They could easily get overwhelmed as we have already seen elsewhere.
This is time for community and community action. This is a time to be proactive. Panic and fear are absolutely our worst enemies.
We are our own greatest asset right now.

Get a copy, get educated and prepared. Reach out to your neighbors and community. Organize and think about who around you may need help. Amazing people and resources are all around all of us. In all of us.

Lets call in Doctors without Borders, somehow they figure out how to isolate very ill individuals out deep in forests with very little supplies.

Putting someone in charge of a potential public health emergency who has no background in medicine nor emergency response is ridiculous. If theres on thing to learn from the last administration its that multi agency communication&response is necessary. Even Korea has tested over 30, 000 people. We ought to be testing everyone with pneumonia in hospitals now, its probably already in a few hospitals undetected.
So dont wait on any govt response, take anti virals like elderberry and look up diets to kill viruses. Everyone needs to cut down on sugar but esp now as sugar feeds most illnesses.
Get yourself as healthy as possible. Order good masks. Understand if businesses dont have enough employees available due to illness. Be patient. Stay home if you have the flu. At this point it would be nice to see a fund set up to cover people’s pay to encourage them to stay home if ill at all.
Stock up on food. Get a good hand pump water filter. We could get quarantined and from the videos from quarantined towns in Italy right now, nothing is really being brought into the towns. So the more prepared you are the better. We all ought to be ready anyway with the high risk of a big quake hitting.
