Press release from the Healy Center:

The Healy Senior Center received a $15,000 [grant] from Redwood Memorial and St. Joseph Hospitals from their Care for the Poor Community Grant Program.

“We are so pleased to be one of several recipients of the Care for the Poor Grant this year,” said Cynthany Windwalker, Board Secretary at the Healy Senior Center. “The funding from this grant will support our Meals on Wheels Program, which delivers meals to Southern Humboldt seniors and homebound adults three days a week.”

The Healy Senior Center operates the only Meals on Wheels program between Willits and Fortuna. “We know that our Meals on Wheels program is important in Southern Humboldt,” said Windwalker. “We take this program seriously, as we know our home-delivered meals are sometimes the only access to fresh and nutritious meals that our clients have.”

Windwalker reminds the community of a recent price change in the Healy’s meal services. “Our costs have significantly increased over the past several years, so we were obliged to increase the price of our meals by one dollar,” she said. “The one exception is the $6.00-per-meal donation that we request from our Meals on Wheels clients. That amount will not be increase, nor will any of our Meals on Wheels clients be denied food if they cannot afford the full $6.00.”

The Healy Senior Center serves a Social Dining lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 12:30pm that is open to all ages. Community members over 60 years old can dine for $7.00 and $9.00

for people under 60 years old. The Healy also has frozen meals for sale to all ages for $6.00 per meal. They can be purchased during the Healy’s open hours.

“On behalf of the Healy Senior Center Board of Directors, thank you to Redwood Memorial and St. Joseph Hospitals for the generous Care for the Poor Grant,” said Windwalker. “We are pleased to have our important work recognized by two leading organizations in the community.”
