Information from Arcata Fire’s Facebook page:

Arcata Fire District responded to a residential structure fire in Westhaven [yesterday]. Arcata firefighters assisted firefighters from Westhaven, CAL FIRE, and Fieldbrook fire departments.

Crews fought the fire from behind a fence that was electrically charged by a down power line and had to wait for PG&E to secure power before they could access the yard.

Firefighters were also challenged by lack of water supply in the area. Multiple fire departments set up a relay pump operation to get water to the fire scene.

Arcata Fire sent one of the on-duty crews to assist Westhaven with the fire as part of an automatic aid plan. Arcata Fire is able to provide aid to its neighboring agencies and receives aid in return.

I’m surprised that PG&E can’t tell when a line is down, and turn it off. I would think there would be a difference in the line load. Just guessing, of course.

🕯🌳Its not as easy as flipping a switch, a lots got to be taken into consideration before you do,but that being said a big BRAVO to the firefighters for doing the best that they could in a diverse situation. 👍🏽🇺🇸🖖

What a completely irrelevant and imbecilic comment. But what does one expect from a Bernie Bro.

What got me going is the commenter that blames everything, and I mean everything on “Liberals”. I’m sick of it and I’m countering with ridiculousness of my own.
See how stupid it is?

They don’t. Notice they tell me I’m crazy but they don’t tell the Liberal basher he’s crazy. That says it all.

Sad for the home owners. I was wondering if the fire fighters managed to save the dog that was in the house? Does anyone know? I thought that most fire departments had tools to cut hot wires to get them out of the way.

Fire fighters aren’t super heroes. The laws of physics affect them too. what might a tool to cut wire be made of? Metal? something conductive? Got your gloves wet?.. Actually there are breakers that may or may not get tripped if the wires short out. Thats up to PG&E to check. ( to answer Ed’s question above) pulling the breakers may shut off multiple houses, and can’t be done remotely.
Did those volunteers sign up to DIE for the house? nope. A burnt down house is bad, a burnt down house, and a couple dead friends and neighbors is way worse.

not their emergency, I did not say fire fighters are super heroes. Just wondered about the dog. Power line cutter poles are generally made of fiberglass or a plastic nonconductive material. To be honest, your comment is a little nasty!

I’m curious about the downed power line, was it down before or after the fire started? And why was it down, did it cause the fire or vice-versa, or not related? It will be interesting to hear follow up reports, glad everyone is ok.

I am guessing the downed wire was the service wire to the house, not one of the wires that go from pole to pole.
