Humboldt Smokes the Emerald Cup; 12 of the Top 20 Strains!

Humboldt County is well-represented in the list of 2019 Emerald Cup contest award winners, with a number of first place rankings and top placements scattered across the bulk of the Cup’s various contest categories.

Licensed Humboldt farms crushed the Sungrown Flower category, which, to many, is what the Emerald Cup is all about. Ridgeline Farms took first, fifth and ninth places, with its Ridgeline Runtz, Ice Cream Cake and Green Lantern strains, respectively. Humboldt Redwood Healing took third place with White Runtz.

Green Light Farms, Talking Trees Farms, Lost Coast Elixirs, DewPoint, Skyline Farms, Love Humboldt and Savage Farms also placed in the top 20 for Sungrown Flower. All told, 12 of the top 20 strains came from Humboldt farms, with the majority coming from SoHum locations.

Humboldt businesses also swept the BHO Liquid category and dominated the CO2 Carts, Ice Water Hash and BHO Solid categories. Organic Medicinals Farm in Humboldt County took the Regenerative Farm Award, and Talking Trees Farms won the Flower Pre-Roll category with its Mixed Light “It’s It” pre-roll.

Lady Sativa Farm out of Benbow took first place in the CBD Tincture Category for its collaboration with Chemistry out of Alameda County: Lady Benbow Full Spectrum High CBD Tincture.

When reached for comment, Lady Sativa Farm CEO and Co-Founder Rio Anderson said, “It was exciting to win the category with my partner Chemistry, but it was way more exciting to work with local distributors and local farmers in a collaboration and [to] have so much success as a community.”

Thomas Mulder (left) and Matt Nelson (right). Nelson is a partner (co-owner) of Humboldt Redwood Healing.

Thomas Mulder, founder and president of Humboldt Redwood Healing in Southern Humboldt, echoed Anderson’s sentiment, citing his company’s strong bond with local distribution companies Redwood Roots and Humboldt Brand as part of the driving force behind the farm’s noteworthy third place sungrown flower success.

These companies and other small farms in Humboldt have been building each other up and trying to revitalize the community, Mulder said when reached by phone on Tuesday, adding more depth to the dynamic behind participating in competitions like this. The aforementioned distribution companies, in particular, fight for and care about the small farmers and culture here.

Mulder was born and raised in SoHum and he is a recognizable presence in the local regulated cannabis industry, having taken steps in the last four years to turn his cultivation hobby into a career. He’s also active in youth sports and he sits on the Southern Humboldt Unified School District’s Board of Trustees.

“I want to see our community thrive,” he says, and while there has been a downturn in the community and some frustrations, there are positive things happening too.

The number of local businesses capturing awards in this year’s Emerald Cup is one such positive and important development — confirmation, as Mulder puts it, that “[n]o matter how hard everything is, there are people out there still fighting and … still producing the quality product that we are known for in this region.”

He describes his winning strain White Runtz as exotic and says it’s rumored to be an offshoot of Gelato. Its effect is both relaxing and uplifting, Mulder says. Its aroma, “amazing.” White Runtz is not a big producer, and the plants take some extra care. Its flowers get a nice and colorful light purple tint as the cold nights of fall start to come on.

Humboldt Redwood Healing also entered its Sour G in the Sungrown Flower category, a hard-hitting fuel strain that did not wind up placing. Mulder points out that scan of the Top 20 list for this category makes it seem like the judges were more into the floral and fruit strains this year. Indeed, strains like POG (Passion Orange Guava), Rose Lemonade, Candied Banana and Lemon Butter Creme stand out.

Southern Humboldt’s Ridgeline Farms has officially taken first place in the Sungrown Flower category for two years running now, with Green Lantern in 2018 and its Ridgeline Runtz this year, plus its fifth place Ice Cream Cake flower, to boot.

When reached on Instagram about the farm’s big win, Owner Jason Gellman expressed great enthusiasm, saying, “This win [is] for Humboldt County. This win is for the cannabis community. This win is for the people who dedicated their life to the plant.”

“This is our heritage,” Gellman continues. “And we will not stand around and watch the [corporations] take it from us. We are relevant, and we will continue to grow the best sungrown marijuana on earth.”

To this point, Mulder said he did not see any one large brand dominating the Emerald Cup this year. With such prime positioning “still there for the taking.” Humboldt still has a chance to be a powerful force in the new regulated market place, to have top notch flower out there and to be recognized for it as well, he said.

As evidenced by Humboldt’s ubiquitous presence in the licensed Sungrown winners’ circle and across all of the 2019 Emerald Cup contest categories, there is clearly great momentum in this community to be competitive and prominent in the regulated industry.

In the spirit of the holidays, it is important to note that many award-winning and locally-sourced cannabis products can be found both at our local dispensaries and in dispensaries all over the state. The online cannabis news and information site Leafly just posted a story on where to buy many of the 2019 Emerald Cup contest winners as well, basically a guide to finding some of the Cup winners in more urban locations. group shots are courtesy of Chris Anderson (Redwood Roots).

So amazing how the market has expanded! The panel of judges must be in the 100s now. With that being said…so many entries, how can they be all evaluated EQUALLY in the short time between entry close and the cup? In 2016 many entries were not mechanically tested prior to judging and later winners were found to be of low THC (when thought to be DANK and contaminated with multiple chemicals and pesticides) and many entries were not evaluated at all before the cup. Those non evaluated products were found later to be head and shoulders above the winners but buried in the PILE . How was this avoided now?
Your buds are beautiful. If you cut hhe nitrogen over load you wont have the super sawtooth taco rolled leaves boys! Soil and grow media should be tested for residues to verify clean growth practices. If that happend it would really be a game changer. Move the cup away from a popularity gro boi frat atmosphrere to real FARMING. 💡

Last year everything had to be tested phase 2 compliant before the cup. All product in the legal flower category was surrendered to distro for testing. This was pre judging I believe as the deadline for entry in the legal category was Nov. 18th. I will agree that it seems like an awful lot of flower to evaluate in under a month, but it’s always been done that way. With that being said, congrats Humboldt!! It sure was nice to scroll through this list and know most of the players…

Congrats and damn good showing. While we continue to struggle with our division of legality it’s clear who owns this plant. Do not forget those that came before, those no longer here, those who have been criminalized and the many families that have been torn apart. Do not ever forget those that paved the way that made the road you are on easier to traverse, never forget!

Great (sarcasm)…more inflated egos thinking that Humboldt is the end all be all.

By comparison, Napa has some great wines but many of my favorites are actually from Sonoma.

By comparison corporate cannabis asshats think they grow decent weed in the valley, in deserts and indoor in urban cities. Yet the best weed seems to be produced in the Triangle which happens to be my favorites.

NAPA for auto parts

Actually we should be replanting the coast redwoods. They are one of the finest carbon sequestering trees on the planet. We won’t care about wine once the permafrost melt goes runaway.

Somebody needs to say it and so I guess I will….” The aforementioned distribution companies, in particular, fight for and care about the small farmers and culture here.” Really?! This is how you’re gonna shade it? The culture died when half the neighborhood decided it was better for them to get permits and pay fees to eradicate their other neighbors. The “small farmers” are not my friends, they re not the mom n pops who are being abated and eradicated in the new wave of CAMP and county aggression that have been unleashed in order to protect the business interests of the sell-out permit cowards. There- I said it.

You guys stroked your egos, got medals for other people’s hard work. You grew some killer dope, that’s to be debated, how about growing some teachers and community based on anything but the drug culture?

So I totally want to be happy for Humboldt and Indy Canno Farms taking the crown this year.. but it’s fairly bittersweet.. Since the ‘legality’ of it all is built on some fairly disturbing principles. What is gained in notoriety is lost in iniquitous enforcement.

It’s also bitter sweet to promote boycotting Humboldt. But dollars is the only thing that makes sense to some.. So until the county start taking a more humane approach to legalization…
