Here’s Michelle Bushnell; She’s One of the Five Candidates Vying for the Second District Supervisor Spot

Michelle Bushnell

With tensions over cannabis permitting and tough financial times in Humboldt County’s Second District due to the economic changes following cannabis legalization, it is no surprise there are four challengers to incumbent Estelle Fennell for her seat on the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors in the upcoming March 3 election. The candidates facing Fennell are Sean DeVries, Richard French, Michael McKaskle, and Michelle Bushnell.

Yesterday, we spoke with Michelle Bushnell about why she thinks she should receive the Second District’s votes. (Note: We’ve reached out to other candidates and we’ll post other interviews as they are completed.)

“I decided to run because I feel like our community and our district are failing,” Bushnell told us. “Sales tax is down a huge percent in our county—that’s astronomical.” Bushnell and her husband own several small businesses in the Southern Humboldt area and she is not only the Board President of the Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce but also a board member and clerk of the Southern Humboldt Unified School District. So she says she is keenly aware of the problems plaguing the area.

“It really disturbs me how much people are struggling right now,” she told us. Besides owning the Boot Leg, a clothing store in Garberville, Bushnell says she is connected to issues throughout the Second District. She told us, “My husband is a land surveyor,…we own and operate a cattle ranch, we are in the process of getting a cannabis permit, and we own two logging trucks as of this year,…we have a small rental business with a few homes from Rio Dell to Redway to Blocksburg…so I know the problems people face in this area.”

Michelle BushnellBushnell says she is concerned how the more rural and remote areas of Humboldt County don’t get the representation they need. “I believe that unincorporated areas of Humboldt tend to get left out–possibly neglected,” she explained. “Maybe our voices need to be louder. The follow through needs to happen.”

The twice yearly Visitors Guide put out by the Eureka Visitors Bureau, she said was an example of this. “I felt Shelter Cove was basically left out,” she told us. “Gyppo Ale Mill was omitted, for instance. [The Guide] largely misrepresented Southern Humboldt and Humboldt as a greater region.” She added, “I believe that it was innocent omissions.”  She said she knows that the Bureau has gone through a tough time recently with the death of their long time executive director and other changes, but she wants to see more regions represented on an advisory board. She suggested that Chambers of Commerce and other like organizations be asked to preview the guide before it is published.

But beyond the concerns of rural Humboldt, Bushnell says she feels ready to address issues that are felt by the larger towns in the Second District also. She says she will be reaching out and talking to the people of Fortuna and Rio Dell to see what their concerns are but, “I think financial stability is huge for everyone…[With the cannabis industry struggling] less sales tax means less money for their towns.”

She says she would like to “open a dialogue with the Planning Department” to  address issues in the Cannabis Permit program. “I’d like to make sure there is consistency in the permitting process,” she told us. She says she wants to know why the cannabis permit process can’t resemble filing for a timber harvest plan. “They are very similar, but there is a different set of rules,” she told us. “I don’t understand why [the cannabis permitting process] is not being streamlined.”

Beyond these issues, Bushnell said she’s concerned about homelessness, mental health, drug abuse, and infrastructure problems in our community. Her own mother was homeless was for 10 years and was plagued by mental health and drug abuse issues. “I have a lot of passionate opinions about that,” she told us. “I feel that for some people until they are ready to get the help, they won’t accept the help. I tried really hard with my own mom and gave her opportunities and she turned to drugs and alcohol even when there were other options available for her.”

Bushnell says she doesn’t “want to make a ton of promises, because it isn’t what I think…It’s what the people think.”

Bushnell says she be reaching out to communities to understand what they want to see change. “I’m going to do meet and greets,” she told us. “Of course, I’m active in the Southern Humboldt community now, but I’m going to go and introduce myself [to other areas] and see what’s important to them.”

Bushell tells us that though she was born in Redding, she was raised in Southern Humboldt. “I’m not going anywhere,” she said. “This is my home…I’m the fourth generation here…My husband and I have raised six children. We are all South Fork [High School] graduates. I have four grandchildren.”

She added, “My grandparents are buried here. I will die here and be buried here….I want this place to thrive. I want my kids to thrive here, too. I want our community to be proud of what we have to offer…We have a ton of stuff to offer; we just need to smooth out the rough edges.”

Not sure that another entrenched pot farming Trump-loving conservative is a good replacement for Estelle!
As usual, no decent candidate to oppose Estelle has emerged.
SoHum will obviously never change, and follows the SHCHD model in which the most conservative and religious types, dominate all administrative jobs by enlisting other members of their churches to bury the ballot boxes, and continue to staff with incompetent, crooked locals just like themselve!.
The real people of SoHum, tend to be outlaw pot farmers, but under the veneer of hippie, lies a deep patina of conservatism, a right-leaning gun-waving commission of effete snobs, dedicated to continuing to eke out a living while espousing a supposed progressive agenda!
Nobody outside the conservative, Republican religious right stands a single chance, in SoHum, and, if you are not FROM THERE, you are screwed.
Most people who attempt to settle in SoHum, soon realize that there is no opportunity for those who have standards, ethics, or professionalism, and that there is only opportunity for those who fit the model of “Republican Pseudo-Hippie”, outlined above.
Really, folks, Estelle is currently the only candidate qualified for this role, and she has experience spanning over a decade. I don’t like her, or trust her, but she is the only person who is running who is a creditable authentic choice!
In Humboldt, the big payoff, is cash. Donors, cash donors, support everything form SHCHD to the Mateel. So, if you are not growing big weight for an established clientele, and you haven’t the gelt to support your causes, you will not see change, in SoHum. This is precisely why people leave the area. Your supervisors, most likely are painted in the same cash from the same sources, people who desire influence and favors. This is how you ended up with someone as poor-quality as Rex Bohn! Who also probably can’t be beaten in a fair election… Bought and paid for, is the best qualification, after all…

Good luck, Mrs Bushnell, and nice try. It takes some courage to stand up, but this is a job for someone with a lot of money behind them, and who has broad support from other people just like them…

Hard to visualize a landlord as a supervisor for this district. Whether you realize it or not this “small business” owner is part of the class that is oppressing the rest of us.
Struggling? I think not.

You think that landlords oppress people? So you think that people that cannot afford a home should just sleep under a tarp? The landlord has a roof they can put over your head for a couple of $$.Sounds like a fair trade to me. If you want to see people that are really oppressed check out some nice places in Somalia then get back to us.

Cool someone else is running but if she’s in the run for a permit, is that not questionable where her motives my lay, like Estelle in the pockets of other growers?

Also, she posted herself online, beating up a thief from her store. I don’t agree that someone stole from her, but she let her anger get to her, before making a more civil decision, like calling the cops. Also why post it online? Will she make choices for the people or herself? Will her choices be fueled by her anger, before she makes choices for the people?

Where I live the cops will be there in an hour- if it’s an emergency. We live in a world where , even if a low level criminal gets clearly id’d, and the criminal’s location is known, the police are not likely to go get them because, like the criminal knows and everyone knows, there is virtually no penalty if they do spend their time to arrest them. The level of crime has exceeded the State government’s willingness to spend the tax payer’s money to protect the taxpayer from being a victim of crime. Too much of the police’s time is spent shooing the same people away only to have them return another day. And yet, although you say you do not agree with theft, you insist that nothing effective is done to stop it. Talk about enabling. I would wish instead that the people who faintly damn the criminal but thoroughly damn the person who tries to protect themselves come up with a solution where the police can be effective so people wouldn’t be so utterly on their own.

She sounds just like what SoHum needs! I believe she is straight forward, honest, and hard working. The people in there now did nothing for the folks in SoHum.

It seems like a conflict of interest to be keeping a tight rein on permits when you, your family and friends are holding them. And how hard do you think that was…

At first exposure, Michelle seems a good ‘candidate’ to replace Estelle.
I believe Michelle, Michael and Sean live in So Hum. Where does Richard live?
I understand Estelle to be popular in Fortuna area (figures, and in some ways, doesn’t). That the majority of candidates are from So Hum says something.
Oh. And. If a Supervisor has or is in the process of having a cannabis permit with the county, wouldn’t they need to recuse themself from any vote on the cannabis issue? If so, Michelle, or any other candidate in that position may have to make a hard choice and/or voters who have cannabis interests would. Otherwise we could elect someone who would be neutered with regard to voting to change the system we have.

She doesn’t sound all that small to me. Owning a store, cattle ranch, rentals from Rio Dell to Garberville a desire to cash in on the cannabis crop and she just bought two lumber trucks. Well…she is getting a weed permit. So…she has money, wants more and has no problem paying funds into the CAMP program to eradicate her less-fortunate and “evil black-market” neighbors. So she just lost my vote. Anybody who chooses to contribute into a system that funds the eradication of their neighbor mom n pops should have their morality and ethics called into question. Because if they make that particular decision…I can only imagine what else they would find acceptable.

I had the pleasure of working with Michelle recently. I was helping to organize a clothing drive for the victims of the Lake County fires and the Bootleg donated hundred of dollars worth of warm weather clothing to the people who had lost everything. They were extremely generous. They donated brand new coats, boots and the like.

Just recently Michelle volunteered for the benefit that was thrown at Beginnings for the medical support for local firefighter, teacher and friend Nancy Peregrine. Michelle worked tirelessly collecting the money for the meal. I was so grateful as she was so competent and we don’t often see her at Beginnings events.

I love what she wrote here. Her community involvement is stellar! Her commitment to this part of the county is beyond reproach. I like that her focus will not be based in Fortuna, but in SoHum.

I’m very impressed, Michelle. Thank you!

I think you are not quite hitting the mark lost !! I have had dealings with Michelle a few times. Think I havent?? Let me tell you something, Before she was a Bushnell she was Michelle Harrison, and that was after she was dating Travis Humphrey. So for decades I have seen Michelle many times give freely of herself. I asked her to help in a legal matter years and years ago and she did not hesitate to do what she felt was right. You ask of she will be good for your county ? I dont know. What I do know is she is honest, knows your county for sure, knows the school district, smart, and gives freely of herself. Yes that is not the quality that supervisors posses, but I tell you this. She will do more for your county than any of the other idiots have since Roy Heider, who tried so hard for his district, but was only one vote. I would vote for her in a second if I lived in Humboldt. Hang in there Michelle and dont let the idiots that dont know shit detour you from your journey ! I know you will do what you feel is right in your heart.

PO marine: i don’t disbelieve she has the people’s best interest in mind. I don’t disagree that she’s tenacious. I’m aware she is very familiar with the county. We need someone that treats everyone as equals, at least given respect.

When I said rough edges I had forgotten about her tasteless postings and assaults at her store. She is the reason I won’t join the chamber of commerce. She verbally attacked me and a associate on two different occasions. One was a volunteer for a community non profit, I, just a concerned citizen/ business owner/resident of 20 years.

Small business owners and people with a stake in this community are just the kinds of people we need to represent US!!!

Our towns used to be enjoyable, neighborly and prosperous and what we have now simply WON’T DUE.

It’s time to clean house, clean out the hotels, clean up main street. Have a nice space for kids to explore and ride bikes.

Send the junkie vagrants packing and get back to business. We need people to invest in this community, (locals and skilled, productive newcomers) and stop trying to turn it into a massive vagrant encampment.

I’m talking to you MS. PATTY RAEY — End the showers, end the meal programs and end the charities for junkies.

If you want to deal with hard core drug addicts and layabouts, take it up the hill with you to your land and take total responsibility for them rather than conveniently abusing town as a safe haven for junkies.

Our compassion in the area should be focused on helping uplift the working poor and people who actually contribute.

We better act now, before we lose it all because of some vagrant fire or the plague. Hold people accountable. Hold the cops accountable to enforce the law!!

This actually concerns me, since she handles situations in her store, above the law. She had posted online, a video of her pulling a girl around by the hair and rammed her into my friends parked car, then continued to beat the girl, after she was subdued. Im not ok with the girl who stole from her, no one deserves to have their hard work stolen but I felt it went too far. I’ve heard of street justice since the cops don’t do much but if she could continue a beating, after the perp was subdued, will she feel ok to be above the law, when in power?

Shopped there last week and overhead her daughter, talking bout having family & friends beat some jerk who kicked her truck. Not ok, someone kicked her truck, but if illegal street justice, are the teachings she instills in her child, it concerns me what laws she will feel ok to bend, when she feels like it. If I can’t pursue street justice on my X, who ripped off my family cause vigilantism is illegal, & I had to learn to eventually accept it & get over it, why does she get a free pass? It’s one thing to presue street justice and another to actually serve the public. The two mixed can be a bad recipe for potential abuse.

Exactly. Yes, Michele is a hard worker. Yes, she cares a lot about So Hum but to me she lacks emotional maturity. I’ve heard and seen way too much and kicking shoplifters asses shows she has a violent side. Just don’t think she possesses the emotional maturity to carry out the job with dignity.

Actually, I think Michele totally does have the strength and maturity for supervisor! What are you supposed to do as a small business owner when the cops literally do NOTHING! I have seen vagrants get unnecessarily violent with shop owners and workers! Actually So hum and No Hum desperately need somebody who will fight for us in office. Estelle failed to do that time and time again. I have had vagrants get unnecessary violent twards me for not giving them change and such. Literally Scream at me at the grocery store.. over nothing. No… she is a Lioness and she will fight for us… I actually largely appreciate that! Estelle is a roll over and needs to go!

So you support behavior that’s not legal? If it’s illegal for me to hit someone but ok for her?

Think about what your really saying here? The kids are watching & listening. So if Lil Suzi is upset, Lil Joanna made fun of her and the teachers did nothing about it, are you saying it’s ok for lil Suzi to beat up lil Joanna? If we try to teach our kids to not behave this way, why is it ok to behave this way as adults? Or are we really just teaching the kids hypocrisy?

Legality often has little to do with morality. I am not a fan of unnecessary violence, but I can completely relate to being fed up to a point of breaking, especially in Garb/Redway area!

What exactly are we teaching our children? That it’s fine to lose self respect for your community to a point where it’s ok to let the streets look like a 3rd world country. That it’s fine to let thieves and addicts dominate the community with impunity? That it’s ok to steal? That violence from vagrants is acceptable, and tolerated? That our town should just be avoided because there are just too many violent vagrants, and they took over?

And yes, I think it’s totally ok to empower lil Susie to stand up for her self if she is being bullied. Absolutely.

When leo turn their heads, and you have to, Sometimes you have to protect yourself and deal with people on a level they can understand. Soooo a person stands their ground. I dont think that is bad and I bet that person will think about another store to rip off. Dont you think ? Go find your safe place and hope you are never a victim. Oh if you ever need protection, maybe you can call meshelle if you dont want to protect yours. I am sure she will talk to anybody anywhere about what ever the issues you have about your county. she is a stand up person. Sooooo exactly who would you really want to stand up for you and your concerns? Something sounds more than just a club you wouldnt want to join just because told you something you didnt like. Be honest, what is it ?

Video post mentioned has a dark cloud of truth that cannot be masked.
There is no doubt that a large population of SoHum is reliant upon her family for employment, housing, goods, etc.
We cannot ignore the personal issues which may cloud judgement with Michelle.
First and foremost, the history of drug abuse with very close family members, who she has continuously enabled and supported while knowing that they are actively involved in constant drug use.
She takes a big risk at exposing her ability to turn a blind eye to the problem when it involves her brother. [edit]
This was not the end of her helping the same brother with housing.
Rather than let him live on her property, she decided it was better to pay his rent and have him live at the brass rail, which ultimately took on renovations , clearing out all of the tenants during the remodel, except her brother, who was allowed to continue to live there, [edit] with his rent paid by big sis, for a couple of years.
I’m not sure how much of what I say here is 100% fact. I am sure that this is my personal recollection of just some of the coddling she gives to a brother she loves and supports still to this day, regardless of where he is living today. He has not ever tried to get clean. She accepts that. She and her husband, while supporting him, [edit]
Am I telling you absolute facts? …probably. Can you read this comment and look away as if I’m full of shit, probably? I know Denial is deep, so I close by saying this-
I’m 100% sure that if my comment does not get deleted(which it often does, mysteriously) Michell will definately read this. Michelle will know exactly which parts of my comment hold truth and which parts were elaborated by those passing information along through the cannabis vine, and whether or not she can with a clear conscience continue to conceal her own personal responsibility to feeding the addiction epidemic of SoHum will be determined.
I boldly ask that Michelle acknowledge my comment and tell us how she intends to supervise a county when supervising her own baby brother has failed so epically!

***Jennifer Bushnell was an amazing bright young lady with a world of opportunity ahead of her. She was a pleasure to know and I think of her often. My heart holds love in her memory always 🌹

Good reply Kym. Many families in this community have struggled mightly with addicted siblings or other family members. There is such a fine line between enabling and tough love. To discount Michelle’s humanity for trying to figure out the best way she can help, cope, and understand a family member’s addiction tells me this poster may not grasp the angst many of us have experienced in that position.

After spending some time reading all this discourse about Michelle, I would love to hear more from her !
Hopefully she will hold some sort of town meet & greet soon .
Anyone would be better than Estelle and we sure could use a sohum rep !
More than willing to consider Michelle for the job ! Sohum needs all the help we can get .

What strikes me most in criticisms and even compliments of political candidates is that they come from the perspectives of people who often don’t know the facts or the circumstances involved. What I do know is that it takes courage to throw your hat in the ring to offer to serve the same people that can either tear you down or put you on a pedestal.
Let’s face it, no candidate can have a perfect record even if perfect could be defined. What I look for is people who are not afraid to talk to and actually try to understand people who may not agree with them. That is a rare virtue in todays political world.
Michelle I hope you have that trait. If so now is the time to put it on display.

Thank you KYM for responding. I’ll take what you’ve said to a serious consideration. I do change my user name, however, I did not know it would affect your knowing who created the comment. I had believed you were able to know by email address. All future posts from me will be made with my legal first and last name, and a rose.
And, by the way, my vote will be with Michelle, if she makes it to the ballot! ( I happen to feel she’d be fantastic )
That being said, I too have a younger brother that I hold dear and love with all my heart. I love him so very much, but I don’t love what he does and I don’t love his struggles with addiction.
I’m sure it would take very little fact checking to [edit: I hope you can understand that if I dpent time fact checking comments I would have little time to write articles. I request commenters to be sure provide proof of accusations of illegality.]
It’s my guess most of what I’m saying here will be deleted and I’m cool with that. It’s more for your info anyway, but I I feel this is worth considering when we are thinking about who represents us as a county( not that I object, but it should be considered). I also believe that, as much as you love your brother, you are not personally supporting him financially, and you are not one to hold info only because he’s your family. In fact you do report the news, regardless of how close to home it hits. In fact you love unconditionally, but with an honest heart.
My brother, Michelle’s brother, your brother, are all in many ways a big part of the pains and suffering our community faces, and whether we like it or not, we have to accept any responsibility we may personally have, direct or indirect, and if you can truly say that you have none, then I believe you, Kym. I, myself cannot. I have contributed, participated, ignored many things, many times. I can’t say I’m innocent to some problem and I don’t believe Michelle can either.

Michelle’s a big drama queen. Drama not just follows Michelle around wherever she goes, she CREATES TOXIC drama. She uses her and her husbands indoor weed money to buy her way into things including friendships. Sorrowful. She constantly takes credit for other people’s work, and treats people that work for her like crap .
Ask anyone that’s tried working with her on any community event, she tries to come in and dominate everything and everybody, and when people don’t let her, she leaves in a mad huff she would make a horrible supervisor
She is such a control freak that between she and her husband, she’s the one that wears the pants in that relationship.lol

So many people on these threads throw out generic accusations. I would rather see facts, not accusations. I have seen these accusations directed at almost every person or entity. If you are going to make these statements, back them up with facts or examples. If you can’t back them up, you’re just gossiping. Let me give you some examples of statements that are not validated with facts.
1. “Worst board member in the history of Redway service district”. What did this person do to elicit this comment?
2. “Right now, politics across the board need a change”. What kind of change?
3. “Time for a change. Estelle has tried to consolidate her political career by catering to the powers at be instead of the people in our community. Lot of talk little action”. How has she done this?
4. “You’ve truly been a disgusting nightmare to the community!!!!!” How so?
5. “She constantly takes credit for other people’s work and treats people that work for her like crap”. Example please.
If you believe statements like these, you are being led down the path of the uninformed.
