Eureka High School’s Albee Stadium ‘Poses a Significant Health and Safety Hazard’

Eureka High SchoolPress release from Eureka City Schools:

Following assessments by independent structural engineers and City Public Works that Eureka High School’s Albee Stadium poses a significant health and safety hazard with potentially fatal implications, Eureka City Schools has placed an Emergency Measure on the March ballot to address urgent needs.

“This emergency measure is necessary to protect the health and safety of anyone using Eureka High School’s stadium—including students, teachers and school staff, families, and members of the public,” said Superintendent Fred Van Vleck.

The City of Eureka Public Works Department had found that dangerous sinkholes have already developed, resulting in the District’s closure and condemnation of the Welding Shop to protect students.

The City of Eureka also warned additional sinkholes can develop with no warning, which would create an imminent health and safety risk to students, staff, and community members.

“Albee Stadium needs to be brought up to current health, safety, earthquake and disability access standards. Upgrading the stadium will also enable it to be used effectively as an emergency evacuation site in unpredictable or catastrophic emergencies, such as wildfires and PG&E power outages,” said High School Principal Jennifer Johnson.

“Our staff will be working closely with the City to ensure the safety of our families and students until funding secured to address these needs,” continued Superintendent Van Vleck.

“If the emergency measure is adopted, Eureka City Schools will also qualify for additional state matching funds to undertake this work. We will continue to keep our families and the Eureka community informed.”

how about using some of those astronomical “pot” taxes they were supposed to be collecting to fix this. What a great way to spend that money…… wait, I must be stoned, never mind !!

Its amazing how they put lights in the slabs around the quad. Took R. Arkley. Never removed asbestos. Screwed so many kids over with zero tolerance policies by the way of Zoe. And yes, that is exactly what they are asking for. Pot money for retrofit. Perfect timing! Think about it ….

Eureka resisted everything about cannabis for the past 40 years. Pretty amusing that now you look towards it to support your dreams. You must be stoned.

A turf field would not only benefit EHS athletics and PE programs but also numerous community activities as well. A turf field is not cheap but has long term benefits and maintenance savings.

It is a turf field: natural turf. If you are referring to artificial turf, do your homework. They have issues too.

What the children of the world need most right now is an acre-and-a-half of outdoor carpeting.

Turf fields are breeding grounds for staph infections and can be linked to cancer. Just look at HSU’s turf field. Many people have gotten staph infections from it and signs are posted all over the gym and bathrooms to keep an eye out for it. As for the cancer part, they use chipped up used tires to spread over the turf. I’ve heard anecdotal evidence from coaches that cancer rates have increased among their students, current or graduated, since the installation of turf fields. I believe example of this was the turf field installed at UC Davis. I don’t know about HSU though.

No matter how many times bonds are passed, the bills never go away while the funds are long spent. No accounting for how the money was spent, no planning and saving for the future, nothing. It’s not that this is an exaggeration but for sure it reflects continuing awful financial responsibility. Apparently never to get any better.

I am already paying for bonds that were supposed to go to the schools. What has happened to the money that we have been paying?

They had money several years ago for this exact project, but then put that money elsewhere. Shameful, it didnt fix this then.

@Biiaaatch, No, that was for the gymnasium, not the stadium. They are two separate buildings.

That said, when I was attending EHS (2003-2007) They received massive funds to build an entirely new gym on the parking lot and were supposed to start construction in 2008. No idea why THAT never happened. Then they received funds a few years ago to fix the foundation of the old gym, which they did.

But I still question where the massive funds they received to build a new gym went.

Over $80 million dollars in two GO Bonds since 2003 for Eureka City Schools! As a property tax payer I’m almost tapped out.

Typical , cheapies to ignore basic maintenance such as drains gutters etc allow water to run where it wants cutting away at will. Then when it gets to bad get money to build new.

I thought the last 2 bonds as well as the lottery was to fix our schools? Needless to say the regular sales, property and pot taxes? Where the hell is this money going?

I can’t speak to the bonds money, but when they came up with the idea of funding schools with lottery money they overestimated the revenue it would bring in and shifted the overestimated amount from school funding to other things, thus leaving schools with less funding than they had before they began selling lottery tickets in California.

Bottom line, the city and hopefully the state will provide the necessary funds for the stadium to be brought up to code. Would be nice if they could also fix the welding building for the students. A donation, like go fund me, could also be used to help raise the bucks.

The city and or state do not provide the money. It comes from additional property taxes.

The City does not fund schools and a New Ag building, including welding booths, is under construction right now.

So is the stadium and sinkhole area off limits until repaired? I saw nothing in the PR addressing that. Is it the whole stadium area, part of the stadium, or yet to be determined? How do they know the amount off money it will take to fix it and if they do why aren’t they saying?

This is utter BS. It’s a freaking ball field, not an emergency shelter. It has never been used for that purpose. That’s a cheap PR ploy by a principal who thinks we’re stupid.
