Go to https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ and search for 299 to check current conditions, it’ll tell you what the chain requirements are for each area. At this time, it doesn’t look like there’s any chain requirements at all west of Redding, so I’m guessing the snow has let up, but double-check before leaving.

Trippyhippie, I have a 4X4 and always carry chains in the winter when going on 299, 3, 36, 101, 20 and I-5. I use the easy to put on cable chains with cross links. Each set comes in its own carrying bag. They are light and easy to store. Be careful out there friend.

You’d have to be NUTZ to drive CA 36 between CA 3 and Platina. It’s all above 4000 feet and deadly without snow.
