Linda Hall-Martin: Volunteer, Philanthropist, Amazing Cook and Traveler
This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and your memories to [email protected].
Linda Hall-Martin, 62, of Eureka, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly September 22, 2019, at St. Joseph Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.
Linda was born on July 4th, 1957 in Martinez, CA to Wilbert and Francis Hall, the first of their two children. The Halls owned a floral shop, Granshaw’s, in Martinez, where Linda developed a strong work ethic from a very young age. Both she and her younger brother, John, could frequently be found helping their parents with flower arrangements and customer service at the store.
Linda attended elementary school in Martinez and graduated from Carondelet High School in Concord and Heald Business College. She then moved to Humboldt County where she fell in love with the area and decided to make it her home. Linda also fell in love with Chris (“Mel”) Martin–they married in 1984, spending 35 amazing and wonderful years together.
Linda’s business education enabled her to hold several rewarding positions in a career as an executive secretary for insurance companies and law firms, culminating in her retirement at the young age of 55 after a long tenure at Humboldt State University.
Linda was a woman of many passions, and when she was involved in them, she was all in. One of these was animal rescue, leading her to co-found the organization, Friends for Life. She also contributed to other animal rescue groups through volunteering and philanthropy.
She was an amazing cook and loved to entertain her friends and family at her Cutten home, which she and Chris had beautified through their mutual love of gardening. Additionally, Linda and her friend, Carol Lang, owned and operated Occasions Catering for many years.
Linda loved to travel. She and Chris made several trips afar to Scotland and England, but they also enjoyed spending long weekends closer to home with excursions to the Oregon Coast and Las Vegas. They were both passionate about exercise, whether it was sunrise walks with their dogs or giving their all at spin class several times a week.
Linda is survived by her husband, Chris Martin, and all of their four-legged fur children. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as numerous life-long friends. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Willie and Frannie, whom she selflessly cared for during their last years of life; her brother, John Hall, and many four-legged kids. Linda’s family and friends would like to express their deepest and sincerest gratitude and appreciation to the dedicated surgical team and ICU staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their compassion and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Linda’s preferred animal charities, which are: Dogwood Animal Rescue Project, Companion Animal Foundation, and the Humboldt County Animal Shelter.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held at the Bayside Community Hall on Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 12 until 3 pm. All friends and family are welcome.

I was only a few short year friend of Linda’s but was very attached to her as a great friend. While I was Ill last year she was always there for me and would help me anyway she could.
Linda helped me organize a garage sale this year for the homeless doggies and donated many nice things. She truly loved fur babies and that is what made us such immediate friends . Linda never met a dog she wasn’t willing to help.
While heaven has a new angel the doggies and kitties and her friends will sure miss her here.
My sincerest and deepest condolences go out to her family and fur babies.
She sounds like she was a lovely human being. My sympathy to her husband and friends.
Chris,
I will miss seeing Linda in the early morning walks with the four-legged fur children. My heart goes out to you.

Dear Chris,
So glad we had the lovely visit in May and July. So sad and shocking. Love you ! Each day I’m in my garden I think of our little walk there and I’ve noticed a special orange butterfly that comes to visit which reminds me of Linda. Loved her spunk , her love of animals and outspokenness ❤️ Love lizzie
Linda brightened the lives of so many humans and so many animals! I appreciated her passion, her sassiness and her deep caring, especially of Chris. You were so lucky to have each other!
Linda was instrumental in setting up the Emergency Medical Fund that benefits Humboldt County Shelter animals who have medical needs beyond what the County can budget for each animal. So many dogs and cats have been saved and placed in loving homes to enjoy healthy lives as a result of Linda’s can-do spirit. If you are going to donate to Linda’s EMF legacy, and are going to send the check to the Humboldt County Animal Shelter make sure it is clear that the donated funds are for the FFL-EMF. Thank you Linda for all the care and attention to animals in need, and thank you to your family for supporting you in your efforts.
Linda and I became email acquaintances years ago when she would send a donation to Dogwood and I would reach out to thank her. The Dogwood team is going to miss her immensely on our social media page, her comments and support was incredibly touching. On behalf of all of the Dogwood Animal Rescue Family, we send our heartfelt condolences to Linda’s family and hope that Linda is helping take care of all of the animals at Rainbow Bridge. She had a heart of gold and we are sad to learn of her passing.
