Arcata Endorses Declaration of Climate Emergency

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

At the Arcata City Council meeting held on Wednesday, September 18, presiding members of the Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution supporting a Declaration of Climate Emergency. Adopting this resolution solidified Arcata’s commitment to a just transition away from fossil fuels and a climate emergency mobilization effort to reverse global warming.

The world’s leading climate scientists have found that global warming caused by the emissions of greenhouse gasses from human activities is among the most significant problem facing the world today. Arcata, like many parts of the world, is already suffering impacts of climate change in the form of droughts and increased lowland flooding. The severity of these impacts will only increase if global greenhouse gas emissions are not significantly reduced.

For years, Arcata has provided local, regional and national leadership regarding environmental and climate change reversal policy and practices. Over several decades, the City has made a commitment to reversing the effects of climate change with ongoing efforts including, but not limited to:

Establishing the Arcata Community Forest in 1955, which increases tree volume each year to sequestercarbon locally

Creating a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan in 2006

Developing a new Climate Action Plan and an All-Electric Initiative

Implementing a Zero Waste Action Plan

Purchasing 100% renewable electricity for all City operations

The ongoing conversion of City facilities to Zero-Net Energy, with three facilities completed

The City of Arcata resolves to continue to actively work on renewable energy development, work to switch from natural and liquid gas fuel to electric each year and supply 100% of the City’s operational electricity through renewable sources.

Further, the City will continue to track and monitor greenhouse gas emissions towards the goal of elimination and continue to educate and inform residents, businesses and visitors on preparedness actions we can all take to address impacts of the climate emergency in the form of disasters including droughts, wildfire, air pollution, power outages, increased risk of lowland flooding and other climate-related disasters.

The City encourages public participation toward greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals, including input from disenfranchised communities, and recognizes that Arcata residents, community organizations, labor organizations, businesses and schools are integral to leading this effort.

It’s only a matter of time until this translates into another tax.

The voice of reason sometimes is challenged by opposing views I have put a small solar array on a building in Eureka it offsets about $100 of electric bills a month when the time comes to change out the gas eating water heaters I hope to add a few more panels and go Electric not NetZero yet but working on a solution to my own footprint we should all stay open-minded for our children’s future share food and be good to each other

Standard residential electric water heater is 4.5kVA. A bigger PV panel is 0.3+ kVA. Look into solar hot water collectors if you want to use solar for heating water. They are around 85% efficient compared to a PV panel at 25%.

You can heat a standard hot water tank with a heat exchanger and boost that heat as needed on cloudy days with electric or gas. Heliodyne sells a pretty straight forward kit. As long as there is enough sun to cast a shadow it will produce heat.

All electric on demand hot water heaters trying out one for a kitchen sink and shower in a small out building even though it takes quite a bit of energy when it is in use I think it might be saving a bit of money in the long run

~side note on regular electric water heaters. If anyone has replaced an old water heater with a new one in the past ten or so years, notice there’s just a 5-year warranty period. And, consider yourself lucky if you got the whole five years. Here’s why – well, consumerism, obviously. The element in the bottom is waaaay too many volts. This causes the water, starting from the bottom up, to change into a stark-white blobby gel, and grow. After a short while the tank will develop a hole and begin to leak.

On the other hand, my electricity bill is well under $50 per month with no solar refund and no taxpayer subsidy, the propane bill under $25 per month. I have individually switchable surge protectors that turn off most electronic devices 90% of the time. My favorite self satisfied purchase is an LED reading lamp that shuts itself off after an hour so no more waking up in the middle of the night to find I fell asleep with the light still on. It’s a bit of an energy vampire but still good. My house is designed to get lots of sun in winter yet be shaded in summer. I wish I had an on demand water heater and, if my 20 year old tank one dies, I will get one. And I enrolled in energy from as much renewable sources as is available. My goal is to use less. Hopefully in 20 years the major source of power will be local renewables anyway.

What is there to say? These socialists/communists have lost their minds, or have they. More child abuse to promote their socialist cause. Hitler started with the children. The climate can not be controlled however people can. Open your eyes America before it’s to late.

I hope they remember to turn out the lights when the meeting ends. And plant a tree to offset the CO2 their speeches generate.

The City of Arcata should invite Barak Obama to purchase a beach house like he did in Martha’s Vineyard. That way, both the Pacific and Atlantic will be exempt from impending sea level rise.

Nope, it’s just funny as hell that you still do it. You must not be sure of yourself if you need to have sock puppets agree with you . Here’s a hint; it’s really, really obvious, it’s a worn out tactic you’ve used for years. Pretty silly, really.

How very conspiracy theory of you to hold firmly to a mistaken idea as a matter of principle. Better to keep being wrong than admit to being wrong , eh?

Oh look, I attract the same guilty parties when I point this out. Let me guess, it’s a “hoax” and a “witch hunt”.
Let me reiterate; what you do is so obvious and immature. You’ve been doing it for years. I can only surmise that you know that your Trumpian views are mostly unpopular so you have to pretend that hey, look at all these people (sock puppets) that agree. It’s kind of sad and pathetic, that’s all.

I know, Trump breeds the best sheep there are. High quality wool that’s pulled over their eyes.
Did you receive your climate change talking points yet? Or is the administration still trying to figure out how to spin Trumps latest screw up?

So then why not just ban cars instead of guns. Obviously cars are more dangerous. This is just another bs talking point from sheep herders. Don’t be a sheep or you likely to end up at the butcher. The earth warms, just as it also cools. Would you rather have another Ice Age?
