Deaf Man Possibly Killed After Altercation in Humboldt County Found Deceased in Lake County

This is a press release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On August 24th, 2019 the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received information that a stolen vehicle related to a male subject, Grant David Whitaker, 25, of Mackinaw Illinois, who had been reported missing in Illinois, may be located near a Dollar General store in Lake County. Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to locate the vehicle near the Dollar General store in Clearlake Oaks. The vehicle was impounded and secured for later processing. Whitaker’s family had received information that Whitaker had been involved in an altercation with another male subject he was traveling with, Mavrick William Fisher, 21, of Elko Nevada.
Maverick Fisher is also reportedly deaf.
They believed the altercation took place at a campground in Humboldt County. Whitaker’s family had not heard from him since the supposed altercation. The evening of August 25th, the Sheriff’s Office obtained additional information that Fisher had admitted to killing Whitaker. The Sheriff’s Office was also provided with detailed directions as to where Whitaker’s body could be located. On August 26th, the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit served a search warrant at a property located off Scott’s Valley Road, Upper Lake. Detectives were able to locate what is believed to be the human remains of Whitaker in a remote area near the 7500 block of Scott’s Valley Road. The Sheriff’s Office was contacted later in the day by law enforcement authorities in Rosarito Mexico. They had contacted Fisher and were able to determine that Fisher may be wanted in relation to this incident. Sheriff’s Detectives are working this Mexican authorities related to the return of Fisher and taking him into custody. It sounds like he fled to Mexico and was caught or turned himself in there.
Actually Mavrick has history of hitchhiking, he probably used amtrak with Grant’s money.
The police found him in Tijuana and he was recording himself in a video and people were able to locate him by the background.

He was talking to people and admitted to this crime online and some i believe in person before he left for Mexico. He was not in custody until he got there. He had no car and made a video of himself walking in Tijuana saying he’d rather die than go to prison and to see how long he’ll last there with just $300 on him. It was a very sick video. No remorse at all.
He called his sister in Chicago and told her what he did. She called LEO.

It was believed that grant lived on California and he owned a farm there in CA????? San Diego reported that body was found and id’ed as Grant in San Diego????? Confusing media as it is.

You can look up on facebook “Mav” he made lot of video postings about farm in CA and they seemed happy working on the farm. Unimaginable how it happened at the end.

Someone on his cousin’s facebook posted a link about a body found in Oceanside, Ca, which they must have found by googling “body found California” and assumed it might be him for some reason. No official or anyone else familiar with the case speculated that it was Grant. People also got him confused with the Blockburg man who was found safe. Not paying close enough attention I guess.
No, that was someone else, not Grant. Grant’s body were found in Lake County – Northern California..

Grant lived in Illinois with his grandmother the two men traveled here in the hopes of starting some kind of garden for the deaf . It had nothing to do with pot, Grant was completely taken advantage of and brutally murdered by this man he did not have property anywhere in California. I know his grandmother, he was an amazing young man who did not deserve to be brutally murdered by this horrible person

I had the chance to work with grant last year, he was a great man.
I’m am saddened that this young man was killed but am thankful his remains were located and the family at least has some closure. Sending prayers 🙏 #findroberttennison

Keep in mind that there are many Deaf folks commenting on this article whose first language is American Sign Language, and grammar, syntax, etc. are used a bit differently in that language – it can be messy to transcribe it to English.
I think he said he must have learned a lesson but god will not accept him or forgive him. He was angry and destroyed a bible. God brought punishment. He is receiving donations from people but he is on social security and it will affect his benefits. He basically says it’s a crying shame that he has lost all his family and friends. He says don’t get yourself in a mess like that by copying his example or learning from him.

I am not fluent in ASL but was married for 40 years to a deaf woman. Maverick is saying in the two video’s I’ve watched that he wanted more deaf to come to the farm and work with them. He seems to be quite agitated that not more deaf are coming to work on the farm (the old ways) as he put it. Grant Whitaker seemed far more content with what he had to do and was doing on the farm than Maverick.

Grant did not come here to work anywhere near marijuana or a pot garden. Don’t spread rumors that are not true, this young man has a family that is devastated. He wanted to build a communal garden for deaf people and his killer was supposed to help him. if you don’t know what you’re talking about it’s best you keep your comments to yourself for the sake of the family.
Very sad and very real. I lived and worked in Humbolt for years. As with any place on Earth there and good and bad people, Humbolt is no different. It took cat like senses for me to survive up there. Knowing who to surround yourself with and how to conduct yourself. It was often pretty damn wild. My heart goes out for the deceased and family members.
