Snazzy New Developments at Fortuna Union High School District Highlighted in New Column From Superintendent Glen Senestraro
The Fortuna Union High School District would like to welcome all new and returning students and parents to the 2019-2020 school year. All of our schools started on August 12, 2019. We had many projects started and completed during the summer months.
The Agriculture department received some upgrades to the farm lab facilities in the garden and greenhouse area. Beacom Construction refurbished the greenhouse to include automated heating, cooling, lighting and irrigation systems. They also created a 50 x 100 irrigated garden area space for raised beds. Cooper Electric worked on all of the wiring components of the new equipment.
New tools and garden area equipment will be stored in the Junior Barn that sits adjacent to the greenhouse. The overhaul to this facility will allow teachers to incorporate advanced plant and soil science labs into the updated curriculum. This project was funded with Career Technical Education funds.
The Communicative Arts (CA) building, which houses our library and classrooms, received a new PVC roof. Dinsmore Construction was the general contractor for the project. They, along with Redwood Empire Roofing and Cooper Electric, repaired down spouts, removed old roofing material, put a new PVC roof on and wired new cameras on the building. The District paid for these repairs with Capital Outlay funds.
We are in the process of replacing the Husky Field track and repairing the drainage system. Beynon, Inc., Kernan Construction and Pacific Earthscapes are the companies working on the project. Baird Engineering is helping with the engineering services. We are grinding down the old track and replacing it with a new track. We have relocated the pole vault pit and runway to the northwest corner of the stadium. In addition, the new track will be a 400-meter track from the old style of 440 yards.
To accompany the new track we have installed a new scoreboard, donated by a caring family. Fans will notice larger scoreboard digits and overall better visibility. The new scoreboard is located in the same spot, but has been raised a few feet. [Two companies who as
sisted in getting the scoreboard up are Whitchurch Engineering and Wendt Construction.]
Finally, the district, as part of the bond funds, is upgrading the electrical service to the FHS campus. We are coinciding with PG&E’s project of burying the overhead power lines on 12th Street. Dinsmore Construction and Colburn Electric did the work for this project.
Please check out photos pertaining to these projects either at our website, fuhsdistrict.org or on our Fortuna Union High School Facebook page.
Remember, the Fortuna Union High School District’s regularly scheduled board meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month. The public meetings are held in the Fortuna High School Library at 7 p.m. and located at 379 12th Street in Fortuna. The current board members are President Charles Ellebrecht, Vice President Seth McGrath, Clerk Carla Diaz, Anita Gage and Jeana McClendon.
The Fortuna Union High School District is proud to serve the greater Fortuna area with outstanding programs at all of our sites, including Fortuna High, Academy of the Redwoods and East High. 🕯🌳Good morning Kym and thank you for the kids, they needed the upgrade. 👍🏽
Please name the new Fortuna High Scoreboard after Fermin Garcia and Kevin Primofiore. Both of these guys made Husky field beautiful..
Fortuna has their act together. After 2 bonds and what? 8 years, Arcata HIgh is still talking about it –
🕯🌳The city needs improvement but there working at it. They need to start from the ground up. The school is always a good start because children education is an important thing and promoting athletic and other social skills is a also a good start.
Thank you to all those that have been working on FUHS . The track is looking good and the scoreboard is awesome. Once the parking lot and 12th Street gets repaved we will have the nicest school around.
