Smoke From 6000 Acre Fire in Oregon Blanketing Northern California

Smoke from the 6000 acre Milepost 97 Fire (burning approximately 30 miles south of Roseburg, Oregon) is choking the western border of Humboldt County and rolling across the top of Del Norte County.

The Milepost 97 Fire was first reported late Wednesday night and has continued to grow, spewing smoke out and down the coast.

Cal Fire asks Northern California residents to please not report the haze to emergency personnel. “We have no current ongoing issues in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties,” explained Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Savona. “There is smoke in the area from the Milepost 97 fire. [However,] if people see a defined column of smoke or if they see flames, call 911. Cal Fire will keep the community informed should there be a local fire.”

We were wondering. I always have a hard time finding a website. Can you provide that, for the lower smoke map from NOAA/google.

I’m a transplant from the Paradise Camp Fire. We had a private citizen who monitored fire activity and relayed official information online to the public. Is there anything like that in Humboldt/Mendocino/Trinity county? If not, where is the best place to get up to the hour information? I appreciate this site!

For anything local, you’re probably already at that site.

Definitely this site. I’m from trinity and i rely on this site for local news over our newspaper or anything from redding. Nothing personal against other sources, (except facebook and twitter) this is just a better source of timely information, especially with the robust comment section. When i was researching this fire, all of the local oregon news sites were absolute garbage, bad, hard to use layouts and everything is behind a paywall. Even our local newspaper allows you to see breaking news and emergencies without paying and loggiing in. And on another note, the older i get the more i am pleased with my decision to never participate in social media in its current privatized form. It absolutely infuriates me when government entities release crucial timely information on private social networks and not on the open web.

We watched the smoke roll into Round Valley this evening; very grateful for your article, Kym, it was reassuring to know it was that far north, though very sad to hear about.

Oh Man ! Talk about heavy smoke cover.

Woke up this morning at my Daughter’s house near Redding. At this moment, I still can’t see the mountains west nor east. The stuff tastes horrible on my tongue. This is the worst smoke so far this year.

Rogue Weather is a good resource for information on fires in southern Oregon that affect northern California.

https://www.rogueweather.com/fire-info/fire-report

His Facebook site gets updated more frequently, but also has commentary to wade through.

Smoke in Orleans since yesterday afternoon, somewhat less smoke this AM. Saw a convoy of USFS tankers and crew rigs heading north on 96 about 8 AM today.

Not glad for fire but glad its location is well in OR. The last several Summers had weeks of heavy smoke on the Klamath canyon for weeks.

Like others, RHBB is my go to source for this type of and most local info.

I’m a half hour away from this fire outside of grants pass. Its super smokey here. Really hoping they get it under control. Fingers crossed!!! Its so smokey we can smell it in the house with all the windows closed. So far no structures destroyed or lives taken hopefully itll stay that way. The fire is spreading to the south/southwest.

~oh, thank you for checking-in, NoLongerHumboldt.

Stay safe. Sending (not warm)thoughts your way – but rather, seeing you and yours and surrounding areas afire, as weathering the storm, so-to-speak -you’ll be okay.

Very smokey in Redding this morning. Can’t see the mountains to the west and the stench of smoke is back. Deja vu from a year ago this week. We are in permanent fire watch in our community. The least bit of smoke in the air brings people into the street to scan the sky for flames and planes. There’s a dread that it will happen again. We all have PFSD – post fire stress disorder.

Reduced Visibility at ground level in the Eel River Valley along the Avenue.
I think “Moderate” is an understatement given that the ridges across the river are nearly lost in the haze – bluish shadows in the gray…

The worst part is knowing there are people’s lives and homes and livelihoods on the line. Lives, especially.
I cannot forget Paradise…

its just a bunch of pot smokers up near crater lake puffing dream pipes , I know , I was there once , and partook in the ROPE SMOKING , matter of fact , we were the ones who started the whole marihuana mess in Garberville , early 70’s , what a mistake that was , look at all the lives we ruined , I personally am responsible for that emerald triangle horseshit , I take the blame , its a long story , involves the B.E.L. , laguna beach , haight ashbury , Disneyland , mckinleyville , HSU , the santa cruz mts , vw buses , Afghanistan , Pakistan , Bumfukkistan and dr timothy leary — oh excuse me , I left out the diggers , bill Walton , r crumb ( my neighbor in potter valley ) ( also bought his smut on haight street ) bill graham , T-bone walker , pat simmons of the doobie bros ( we named them ) ( no royalties ) ( thanks pat ) ( loser !! ) — I digress , this was a post about the summers 1st big forest fire ? , ok , there you go …

I am praying that the fire is contained without loss of life! God Bless our firemen and women and keep them Safe. We here in Sonoma, Glen Ellen and Kenwood have PFSD as well. Any sign of smoke in the air and folks are stepping out into the street to try to pinpoint it. It is scary.
