Linell Walker: School Secretary With an Adventurous Spirit

This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and your memories to [email protected].

Linell Karen WalkerWe are heartbroken to announce the passing of Linell Karen Walker, on July 2, 2019.  Linell was born in Scotia in 1956 to Robert and Pearl Kitson. She grew up in Fortuna on “the hill” with many childhood friends roaming the open land looking for daily adventures in the neighborhood. In 1974, she graduated Fortuna High School with honors. After graduation, she left Fortuna to explore the world. Linell’s adventurous spirit took her to Europe and then Los Angeles and Santa Cruz. She then went to business school and later worked in medical records in the Los Angeles Area.

In 1979, Linell became a mother. This role defined her life in so many ways. She devoted her life to raising her children and making sure they experienced life to its fullest. Linell was an amazing, selfless, and loving mother and treasured nothing more than raising her two children. During their elementary years, she was room mother for each of their classes, organized school wide events and field trips, and was a daily presence in their classrooms. Linell took her children on many vacations, using what little money she had to make every moment special.

In 1993, Linell started working at South Fortuna Elementary School as the School Secretary. She absolutely loved her career and it was a big part of her identity. She truly thrived in this role. She loved children and loved helping families. For twenty-seven years, each child at South Fortuna Elementary School was greeted by Linell’s genuine smile. Her laugh could often be heard echoing through the hallways. The love she showered on her co-workers, students, and their families was endless. If someone needed anything, she was there to provide it, whether it be a hug, love, support or a listening ear. It was well known that if there was a problem, Linell would fix it, and in record time too.

In October of 2013, Linell became a grandmother to Rio. She loved the role of grandmother and relished spending time and creating memories with her precious grandsons. Even while undergoing treatment and bravely fighting her illness, she continued to log many miles on Highway One between Fortuna and Santa Cruz to ensure that not too much time passed between visits. Linell considered herself blessed to meet her second grandson, Noe in March of 2018.

In April of 2016, Linell was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Colon Cancer. She underwent surgery right away and started chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and Linell was told that she would have to undergo a more intensive chemotherapy regimen. She faced that battle like she did all other obstacles in her life, i.e. with determination, strength, faith in the Lord, and a spirit that would not be broken despite her circumstances.

In December of 2017 she moved down to Roseville to be closer to her children and receive treatment from UCSF and Sutter Cancer Center. The treatment took so much out of her but she still went on her daily walks, and found reasons to laugh each day. Her loving spirit and ability to find humor in the most devastating circumstances was present until the end. She trusted the Lord with all her heart.

Linell was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Pearl Kitson. She is survived by her children, Jennifer (Keegan) Fregeau of Roseville, CA and Steve Walker (Davina) of Santa Cruz, CA and grandsons, Rio and Noe Walker, brother Steve Kitson (Susan) of Truckee, niece Sarah Carpenter (Ben), and nephew Brett Kitson and numerous friends.

Friends and Family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life in Fortuna in the fall.  Date, time, and location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Blackberry Creek Animal Sanctuary at blackberrycreek.org or Neighborhood Ministries at

She will be dearly missed. She was the glue that kept South Fortuna Elementary together. She knew every students name and their background. She even knew which child belonged on which bus and where their stop was. RIP dear lady, you will be missed.

Thank you! She loved every kid that came through South Fortuna Elementary School. As her daughter, I am so thankful that my brother and I were able to share her with the community. She had so much love to give!

There are SO many wonderful things this special lady did for my family. She was one amazing lady who is truly going to be missed. Especially in the halls and the office of South Fortuna School. She will live on in our hearts and memories. My son and I dog sat for her and Jenn a couple of times and I know how much she loved those little dogs. I will treasure those days. Linell, you will always have a special place in my heart and my memories.

Oh Jenni she loved you and RJ so much. I believe she will be watching RJ play sports from heaven. You know how much she loved going to his basketball games.

I will miss you. You were truly the mother of all children when they were at school. You are the reason I was able to leave my children at school and feel good about it. I will forever remember your kindness and loving spirit.

Thank you for posting. She probably had your phone number and schedule memorized in case of an emergency. We had an amazing memory and loved each student as though he or she were her own.

What a loss to our community. Last time I spoke with her my daughter was moving on to junior high. When I asked Mrs. Walker about her summer plans she beamed as she said she was going to see her grandchild. I never saw her with out a smile. She was a special lady who made all our kids feel special.

In grade school I remember pajama parties at Linell’s. One night we all snuck out for a walk around the block and returned to her house giggling over the adventure only to find her brother had locked us out of the house. We had to wake up her patents to let us in, what great memories! She was the first person to greet me at the high school reunions- and I always looked forward to that. Our 45th reunion is in a week, and I will miss her greeting, but will
Continue to smile at the memories. I have a feeling she’s giggling and laughing at her “welcome home” party above.

The Kitson family were the greatest neighbors! As the years went by we got to know Linell and Jenn more each year! Our walks were the best with Linell telling us about who lived where and how she and her friends would play in the open spaces before the homes were built in the Franklin Estates. She told us how she had to be home before dark when out playing but one time a bull in the field chased her up a tree and it wouldn’t leave so she knew she would get in trouble because she was afraid it might be dark by the time she could get down! We all laughed because we could just picture her perched up in that tree waiting patiently for the bull to leave!
We have missed Linell and Jenn and even little Sam since they moved to Roseville but we have such great memories and they will always have a place in our hearts no matter where they are!😇

I truly adored Linell and her genuine personality. She knew every child and his/her family at South School. I only wish my own children had experienced the love she showered on all kids, no matter what went on at home. She was a respite for many. Her amazing laugh and the sound of her heels resounding in the hallways will remain in my heart always.

From all I see her, she no doubt finished the race well and was greeted with,”Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant, enter into the rest of the Lord.” What a true blessing she was to many. She will be missed.
