Pew! Vandalism Stinks, Says EPD, and, After Seeing Less Than Odor-able Graffiti, Arrests Skunk

This is a press release from the Eureka Police Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Kirstie Kay Wright (31-years-old)

Kirstie Kay Wright (31-years-old)

On July 17, 2019, the Eureka Police Department received an email from a Eureka business owner that included a link to a recent “tagging” that occurred in an alley in Old Town on Tuesday, July 16th, just before 11:00 PM. The video showed a female suspect tag the word “Skunk” onto an electrical box using a large black marker. The video was shared by EPD on social media which led to the suspect soon being identified.

On July 18, 2019, a Eureka Police Sergeant conducted follow-up on the information we received concerning the identity and location of the suspect. The suspect was contacted at her place of work and identified as Kirstie Kay Wright (31-years-old). During the Sergeant’s investigation, Wright admitted to tagging the word “Skunk” as seen in the video surveillance. She was also found to be in possession of graffiti instruments. Furthermore, Wright was found to be on active parole out of Humboldt County.

Wright was arrested for possession of graffiti tools and a hold was placed on her by Parole. She was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and is being held without bail due to the parole hold.

This is an ongoing investigation. EPD is currently putting together an expanded criminal case that will be forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s office for possible prosecution over other properties that have been vandalized by Wright. If you are the owner or person responsible for a location that has been vandalized with the word “Skunk” in the City of Eureka, EPD asks that you contact Sergeant Greg Hill at (707) 441-4355.

EPD would like to thank the business owner for proactively providing the video that ultimately led us to Wright. Additionally, EPD would like to thank the citizens who provided the information we needed to locate and arrest her.

“possession of graffiti tools”? Seriously, I have like a whole cabinet of rattle cans. I need to buy an island volcano and practice my evil laugh, it seems.

This is obviously a compelled artist in need of canvas. Someone please give her the side of a building. Let her cover it and refill it anytime she wants. Online patrons can support her paint bills and possibly living expenses. Turn this outlaw into an up-stander—oh wait—is she any good?

No matter the answer to question in the end (didn’t see her tags), your comment was creative and appreciated cause there is often so much hate for people who do stuff that could perhaps be prevented or redirected with something more powerful than hate.

Yea, maybe she’ll get community service and get her own power box to art up. There’s some real nice ones. Hope she didn’t tag over someone else’s art.

31 years old and scrawling on anything that doesn’t move. That’s just sad.

Better than smoking meth and breaking into that box to get some wire to recycle for more meth. And she is employed.

That little sh*t is 31 years old!!! Good thing she was arrested, maybe it will trigger her to finally grow up. I hope she spends time in jail and is forced to pay for the clean up of of her garbage.

It’s pathetic that a 31 year person is tagging. It’s one thing when an ignorant teenager does it, but an adult… just pathetic.

Now that's laughable

The thing that’s pathetic is that you guys get so worked up over graffiti. CALM DOWN.

She’s not bad either.
And it is unused space that would be ignored if nothing was there.

Maybe not then, but that will change, especially in their twilight years. Not only did my parents learn more about me, but I learned so much about them, and the same goes for your children.

She’s not Old, but to me, she does look much younger than many 31 year olds.

Graffiti and tagging is art, if I had to explain it you wouldn’t understand anyway. Some of us have been spraying and tagging longer than she’s been alive.
Don’t worry I don’t live in your community anymore, I’ve taken my art global.

You don’t have to explain it, and I do understand. What you need to understand is that sometimes tagging isn’t art. I have a house that was tagged by homeless people. The tag told other homeless people that the house was empty and available to break in to and sleep in by other homeless folks.

I was quite stunned when I went in to my house and found two homeless people there. My first thought was the danger I might be in, along with my two young children and wife, who were also in the house. The threat of possible violence was the first thing that came to mind. Fortunately I realized the young homeless people were not a threat, and I was right. The point is that for a brief time I felt threatened for the safety of myself and my family. I could very easily have acted on that feeling, and it could have lead to a very bad outcome.

If you want to tag something go tag a railroad car.

YOU might think it’s “art” but it’s a quality of life crime for those who don’t want to encounter your childish need for attention everywhere we go. Stop making your surroundings into a ghetto, you’re impressing no one.

She needs to learn how to respect other peoples property. I guess there are people that figure negative attention is better than no attention at all. There are plenty of outlets for her art work, if she is so inclined, that would be a positive move for her.

No, it’s not the crime of the century, but it’s time to grow up and realize it’s against the law and it will cost you, if you continue with this behavior! Buy your own canvases!

There are way too many people these days that feel they can pick and choose which laws they decide to abide by.

Man I am so glad to see EPD has its priorities straightened out. Don’t want these vandals to ruin the curb appeal of the shooting gallery drug dens, squatter houses, trap houses and wanna-be gangland apartment complexes. You know how the broken window theory goes. We let the small crime slide and then they get away with murder….. Buff the graffiti and statistically the crime will move along, to Redway. I feel so much safer, way to go EPD.

I completely respect the work that went behind trying to maintain the beauty of our town.

Here is the only other link/info I could find related to this woman. https://kymkemp.com/2018/09/01/occupational-empowerment-program-is-helping-humboldt/

Anyone know what she is on parole for?

Curious if, ultimately, we might be able to help this person find a better outlet for her creative energy than vandalizing other’s property; adding to the degradation of downtown Eureka and frustrating the piss out of legitimate business owners. I doubt the parole office has the time and energy to help her figure this out…I just hope and pray they find someone who does or she turns that tremendous creative force inwards and discovers it for herself.

This is a shame. A shame to incarcerate her. A shame she could only think of expressing herself this way. While I completely support the consequences for her actions I am shaking my head at the waste of human potential.

Brainstorm thoughts:
Would creating a space in Eureka where people can let their creative loose help this? I visited Canada recently. In one of the bathrooms the owners had just given in to the urge people have to say “I was here” they painted the bathroom in chalkboard paint and left a bowl of chalk for you to add your “tag”.

What do you think? What could we do as a society to help her make better choices?
