Humboldt County May See an Official Outbreak of Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Infants sometimes have life threatening impacts from Pertussis

Last week, Humboldt County’s DHHS Public Health Branch issued two press releases on Whooping Cough, formally known as Pertussis, signaling concern that an outbreak may be suspected. The cyclical timing of the illness may mean the county is ripe for an outbreak.

Hava Phillips, the Director of Humboldt County’s Communicable Diseases Program, explained that the Pertussis vaccine’s efficacy begins to drop after three to five years in kids. She said it appears that because of this waning trend in the vaccine, Whooping Cough “outbreaks” make regular returns to communities as the group’s immunity begins to “wear off.”

Periodic outbreaks of Whooping Cough appear to occur because the Pertussis vaccine wears off quickly in a percentage of the population. However, the Center for Disease Control website says that the pattern of Pertussis outbreaks is not fully understood.

When Phillips was asked if it possible that an outbreak may occur in the fall, she answered,

It is not an unreasonable assumption. What we know right now is we have had 3 cases diagnosed in the county in the last couple of months. And we also know that is has been between three and five years since we last had an outbreak in Humboldt County. So there is evidence that the bacteria is in the community. There for it is reason to think the immunity in the community [is lower.] But we do not know definitively that it is an outbreak.

Pertussis, also called Whooping Cough, results from a bacteria, Bordetella pertussis, which inflames the major airways with its mildly toxic “excretions.” As the bacteria count builds up, more toxins are delivered, the airways become inflamed and robbed of mucous causing the infected person to cough violently.

About 5-10 days after exposure, a person who has contracted Pertussis gets a clear, runny nose and mildly scratchy throat without much associated fever. The cough develops gradually.  At first it is mild, but after a few weeks, it can become quite serious.  Pertussis gets called “the 100 day cough” because the coughing can last for months. In adults, the cough is generally not deadly but it can be severe enough to break ribs in the elderly or make people vomit.  Children sometimes cough so hard their eyes blacken from broken blood vessels.

More dangerously, Whooping Cough can easily kill babies. It kills about a half a percent of the babies under 4 months old who contract it in the United States. Their airways are so small that the swelling leaves them vulnerable to asphyxiation during the violent coughing. They simply cannot get an in-breath. In 2014, 530 infants got Pertussis in California, and 3 of them died. In other words, 1 in 177 infants who contracted Pertussis that year did not survive. Among babies who do live, the bacteria sometimes causes long term complications with their immune systems and brain function.

Humboldt County reported no cases of Pertussis in 2018, 2017, and only 1 in 2016. However 2015 saw 56 cases of Whooping Cough, and in 2014 there were 148.

There is some concern that a new outbreak may be about to occur at least locally. On July 11th, the Public Health announced 3 confirmed cases of Pertussis had been confirmed since May. The very next day, a second press release informed the public that one person with the illness is a teenager whose diseased investigation revealed that patient had 40 known contacts since becoming contagious.  Those people are being contacted the press release said.

These are the first Pertussis cases in Humboldt since 2016. Each case is being formally investigated by the Communicable Disease Program of Humboldt County’s Public Health Branch as outlined by the Center for Disease Control.

Phillips said the disease investigation will inform the Communicable Disease staff whether this is an outbreak will occur. That information will help the Public Health Branch understand what the community needs to prepare for. Outbreaks climb, peak and decline over a 2 to 4 year period.

The Department is actively investigating each of the three confirmed cases. During an investigation of Pertussis, officials confirm through testing that the illness is, in fact, Whooping Cough. Once the illness is confirmed, they determine who each person was in contact with during the course of the illness, and work to speak to with those people to inform them they may have been exposed and to learn if they have contracted the bacteria. The investigation may proceed to their contacts if they have developed Pertussis.

Phillip said an outbreak is declared if certain thresholds or criteria are present. Factors include the concentration of the cases, the number of cases, and the connection between cases according to Phillips. She would not disclose which communities the 3 currently ill people live in, but she said the cases are dispersed and not concentrated. The investigation will determine if the ill people have an association or were in contact with one another.

Phillips said Humboldt County’s Public Health Branch will continue to inform the public when new cases are confirmed and whether an outbreak has begun.

Pertussis is described as an “highly communicable airborne illness,” but Phillips explained that immunized individuals are less likely to develop Whooping Cough and that closer contact with an infected person is more predictive of someone getting ill than simply being in a public space with an infected person. She re-emphasized that even if people are behind in their booster updates, those who have had the Pertussis vaccine will probably get a much less severe case of the illness than those who are not immunized at all and that it will not last nearly as long. People who contract Whooping Cough appear to have life long immunity according to literature at the CDC’s website.

In September of 2018, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on Pertussis cycles in an article titled Why is Pertussis Making a Comeback? It explained that in the 1990’s, the way the vaccine is prepared changed to reduce associated side effects such as pain at the injection site and more significantly a potential for febrile convulsions caused by a sudden change in body temperature. The new vaccine has fewer side effects, but it also decreases in effectiveness over a shorter time and in a larger percentage of people.

Because Pertussis outbreaks do occur, and because the immunizing effects of the vaccine decrease over time in a significant percentage of people who receive it, Phillips said public health officials emphasize the importance of parents keeping up with the booster schedule for those who do choose to use immunizations. Babies are recommended to be immunized at 2,4 and 6 months with another booster between 15 to 18 months and again when children begin school between 4 and 6 years of age and at adolescence around 11 or 12 years old. Adults generally receive their booster for Whooping Cough in combination with their tetanus shots.

Phillips, and all the literature, emphasize that pregnant women should be immunized in the third trimester of every pregnancy because the immunity transfers to the baby and provides protection until the boosters begin.

Pertussis vaccines are available through the Public Health Department and most pharmacies. It is covered by most health insurance policies or it is $60. It generally takes 2 weeks to become effective. People who believe they have been exposed to a person with Pertussis should see their doctor. Antibiotics can shorten the course of the illness especially if taken early after exposure.

After receiving Tdap, people should receive Td every 10 years for routine booster immunization against tetanus and diphtheria, according to previously published guidelines.((they don’t even recommend boosting the p — pertussis!!)))

So if the recommended interval for booster (of just td) is 10 years, and they dont even boost for whooping couph which the efficacy wains after just 3-5 years..

I see a big problem .

Works with high efficacy. Needs a booster.

Get the Antibody level checked, or just get a booster dose. Beats hell out of a 10 week illness where you cough your ass off, and maybe die…

Nobody gets a pertussis booster….or checks titers. Please.

Even the CDC admits efficacy starts diminishing after just 2 years!!

Contracting the infection ALSO provides some immunity. Probably more than their crappy toxic shots.

Pertussis in adults can be lengthy but the risk of death is nil. Tiny babies are most at risk.

The herd immunity bullet-proof promise of vaccines is balony .

Ignorant mentally-ill backwoods hick dope-farmers know almost nothing, but can spout endless baseless garbage about the science they know nothing about… Reading conspiracy theories will make you even more paranoid.
Having an internet connection does not make you right, or your opinions valuable.

Immunization does not make hair grow on your palms. Allowing yourself and your family to be exposed to, and contract totally preventable diseases is just irresponsible and deranged. If you had to pay for the treatment, you wouldn’t consider not avoiding the disease… Good luck surviving Tetanus, Diptheria, Hepatitis B, Pertussis, Yellow Fever etc…

Many emerging infections coming right up, like Zika Virus, antibiotic resistant Enterobacter and Neisseria, Ebola, MERS, Chicungunya, West Nile, C Diff, and more! Attitudes like yours may end the infestation of this planet by pesky humans!

Why don’t you go to college, study something useful, and get a damn job? Please spare us your continuous crazy ravings, attacks against sensibility, and your outraged insanity!

There are a lot of bad diseases with no specific treatment, and no vaccine. Pertussis we can’t really treat effectively, but we CAN pretty much prevent.

Wait until everyone is getting West Nile, Coccidioides, Rickettsia, Lyme’s Disease. They will be screaming for vaccines…

Ignorance will not save humanity. And vaccine development is lagging disease.

Hopefully, we won’t start seeing Polio epidemics again.

Perhaps it would serve you to broaden your awareness of the vaccine-cautious crowd’s arguments, as well as the lifestyle choices for Permaculturist’s who live in harmony with the planet, grow organic food and medicines including “the devil weed.”

I would REALLY like to get this dtap vaccine for my child but I look at the publicly available ingredients list and find these incredibly harmful neurotoxins, preservatives etc. in them. the real debate should be made for why these toxins are in such an important medication, that yes everyone should get agreed. Too bad no one listens to the antivaxers Etc reasoning. if they did maybe we could work towards truly safe vaccines.

If you know anything bill, you can not deny that conscious parents have great cause to question dominant cultural norms on this matter.

dtap (~Sofia brand) vaccine ingredients include- sodium phosphate, peptone-based medium, bovine extract (US sourced), formaldehyde, ammonium sulfate, aluminum potassium sulfate, modified Mueller and Miller medium, modified Stainer-Scholte medium, isotonic sodium, chloride solution, sodium phosphate thimerosal, gelatin, polysorbate 80(Tween 80), formaldehyde, aluminum

your lack of awareness seems to be at the root of your hate/fear. It may serve you (and us all) if you simply opened your mind.

I decided to do some research on this (mostly consisting of browsing wikipedia), and there actually _is_ a safe, effective ebola vaccine. “In December 2016, a study found the VSV-EBOV vaccine to be 95-100% effective against the Ebola virus, making it the first proven vaccine against the disease.” It’s only seeing limited use currently for a couple reasons – more studies to confirm its safety and effectiveness in providing herd immunity – and the bigger issue of total whackjobs thinking it’s somehow evil and that their (and everyone they know) dying of ebola is much preferable.

No what they are getting in epidemic proportions is autoimmune disease, ticks, autism, cancer, asthma, learning disabilities, seizure disorders, S.I.D.S and other degenerative illnesses that not only have no vaccine to fight but they are actually caused by the toxic chemicals that are in vaccines including but not limited to formaldehyde, mercury (in the flu shot) aluminum in all other vaccines, and glyphosate(round up), not to mention the bio toxic crap they have not tested such as aborted fetal tissue and monkey kidney cells to name just a few.
Are you telling me injecting this injected directly into the blood stream (where much of it crossed the blood brain barrier and gets lodged in the brain) is healthy?
Sir I don’t think you know much about true health.
Merk and all the other vaccine manufacturers (constantly embroiled in lawsuits for their negligence and malice with other pharmaceutical products) are not liable for the safety or efficacy of their vaccines and the CDC is a completely corrupted non partial arm of the vaccine industry. The CDCs funding comes from the sale of vaccines with the officials in a revolving door policy with the vaccine industry. CDC says the mercury in vaccines is “good and safe” mercury.
Please, these people will make any untrue statement because they can not be sued. Their only objective is to protect their billion dollar industry profits. And how many more profits does big pharma make when we have to get on their drugs to control symptoms of life long chronic illness?

Which interest are they beholden to (do you think it is your health or their profit)? If you want real info read the vaccine insert and tell me how all those untested toxins are going to be good for my body, or yours or the little children! I do not need a new study to tell me that mercury injections are good for me, or that smoking will help heal a cough. Fight the mind control and use common sense!

Actually, immigrants from Mexico and South America are more likely to be vaccinated, and willing to get vaccines, than insulated, sheltered Americans because they actually have seen infectious diseases in real life and know it’s nothing to mess around with. My daughter contracted pertussis when she was three years old. She coughed until she threw up for months. It was excruciating. I hadn’t vaccinated her, but if I could do it over again I certainly would have. I had believed the anti-vaxer misinformation that the pertussis vaccine could be harmful. If you don’t want to vaccinate your children and watch them go through such a painful experience, potentially life-threatening, go ahead. But don’t expose my children to it.

Diseases are easily transmitted due to ease of travel. Go to Africa then fly back. Go to the middle east then fly back. Fly on an airplane for 8hrs with someone else infected, and then the entire plane is exposed and a carrier.
And yes, 100,000’s of unvetted illegals never being checked for communicable diseases, and being bused to cities across the US. Third and fourth world nations are the cooking pots for diseases we “almost” eradicated and when “they” come here infected the citizens are the victims. Vaccine marketing relies on vaccines spreading infectious disease

The product markets itself, in other words. While crack cocaine and heroin rely on addiction for self-perpetuating marketing, vaccines actually cause the very conditions they claim to prevent. Each outbreak then becomes another marketing push, and the cycle repeats in waves (as children are injured and killed by vaccines all across America).

To keep the medical scam going, any person who dares cite legitimate scientific findings that question the vaccine dogma of the modern medical cartel is immediately branded an “anti-vaxxer” and marginalized by the media. Thus, vaccines are never subjected to scientific scrutiny, since all science that observes effects which counter the vaccine dogma is sidelined, attacked or ignored. Only findings that support the pseudoscience vaccine narrative are “accepted” by the medical establishment, thus ensuring that no challenge to vaccine safety or effectiveness can ever see the light of day.

This is how the vaccine industry continues to carry out what has often been called a “medical holocaust” while stifling skepticism, science and critical thinking that dares point out the risks associated with widespread immunization policies.

Save lives by staying informed about the true risks associated with vaccines. Read Vaccines.news and Medicine.news for daily updates rooted in evidence-based science and medicine.

This is hilarious! Read the insert! It’s information right from the manufacturer! Nasty stuff in there, no liability for the safety or efficacy! You are very lucky you have had no reaction that you know of or that has developed, but during the seventies the schedule was very light weight compared to what they expect us to get now they were actually responsible(liable) until ’86 when congress released them from any liability, and now they want us boosted every 3 years?!! The Constitution narrowly defines treason and establishes a high bar for conviction. “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort,” Article Three states. “No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.”

When my daughter brought it home from Redway Elementary (age 6 at the time) I simply kept her home – I always did when they were sick – considerate to the community given she was streppy. School didn’t like my policy, but she was unvaccinated and the vaccinated kids were being hospitalized with whatever was going around (mumps, measles, whooping cough, flus – we had them all, plus the Strep in three forms).
Dr. Bill was telling me it was “pseudo -pertussis” because those kids were getting sick – couldn’t be the real thing, he’d made sure of that giving them their shots.
Hmmph!
But I knew the symptoms from my childhood.
My sister had it. I was 4 and she was 7. SHE got real sick and coughed a lot. I just had a “bad cold” with a single WHOOP of a cough – no prolonged coughing. No one worried about me.
In the end, she had and aneurysm develop and then burst. Three surgeries (and three years) later, she died in the recovery room of an allergy to the anesthesia.
I watched my daughter very carefully and she survived… My unvaccinated son never had symptoms.
They were healthier when I pulled them from the system to homeschool. Got enough sleep instead of waking in a panic to meet the school bus, got clear of school bullies and chaotic classrooms. Didn’t have to spend two hours a day in the unsupervised zoo of the school bus.
All of which is TMI, I’m sure.
