Eureka Police Request Assistance From FBI After White Supremacist Flyer With Depiction of Rifle Appeared in Henderson Center Yesterday
Press release from the Eureka Police Department:
On Wednesday, July 10, 2019, the Eureka Police Department was made aware of a propaganda flyer reportedly found in the Henderson Center area of Eureka yesterday. The flyer was from a group which appears to be attempting to recruit young people to their white supremacist cause through such fliers and social media.
The Eureka Police Department is working with our allied law enforcement agencies in Humboldt County to assess any potential direct threats to our community posed by this group. EPD has also assigned a detective to investigate the local source of this disturbing hate propaganda. Additionally, EPD has reached out to the FBI’s satellite office (resident agency) in Eureka/Fortuna along with our local Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) Coordinator for information and assistance.
“The racism, hate and violence espoused by this contemptible group has no place in our community and will not be tolerated. Crimes motivated by racism and hate will be aggressively investigated and we will work with the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office to see them prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” ~EPD Chief Steve Watson

I’m just hoping someone else sees the Orwellian hilarity of some person posting a sheet of paper that essentially says “they’re after all of the white people”, then the police publicly announcing they’ve assigned a detective and requested federal assistance and counterterrorism help.
The “mark of Cain” is one theory. As peoples moved further North pursuing open range-, and later farm-land, for their animals, the production of melanin would have declined slowly generation after generation.

Something else to keep in mind is that there were “natives” already occupying those lands, to some degree. Native is being used loosely here and not as an identifier for any one group of people, not with the intention to offend anyone, as those Natives could have been other groups of Homo or possibly earlier dispersed Homo sapiens from regions outside of Southern Europe/Western Asia/Northern Africa. I’m not a fan of hate speech, but I do feel even white supremacists have a right to exercise their freedom of speech, as allowed by the Constitution. When they turn from speech, even of a hateful nature, to action, is when things change. Futurama had a great episode on this “A Taste of Freedom.”
Something important to remember is that one cannot offend another; another CHOOSES to be offended by one. I can’t make anyone feel a certain way by my words, their reaction is a choice, whether conscious or unconscious. Many, many people fail to understand this simple concept.

The poster is targeting the impressionable, naïve, youngsters which is to me is disturbing and a warning sign of their intentions.
That’s true enough about hate speech having free speech protections, but the flyer may have crossed the line into incitement, which is not protected, with the image of the assault rifle. Then there’s the issue of how consistently the incitement standard is applied. It seems that incitement associated with some racialist ideologies is tolerated more than with others.
You choose to perceive the rifle as an “incitement” to violence whereas others might perceive the rifle as a symbol of defense, not offense.
Keep yourself open to all perspectives.
It might help your case if folks don’t look at other posters by the same group—they use Nazi symbolism and talk about being willing to get their hands dirty while showing a hand gripping a pistol…
I was not aware there are other posters by the same group. I have no knowledge of the group you mention. If it is as you say, it’s borderline at best.

But without having seen that other flier, the flier at the top of the page is not inherently indicative of hate speech.
Some people do most certainly CHOOSE to be offensive.

I agree the rifle image puts the poster in more of an extreme light than peaceful. For sure. But it is a rifle image after all, and not a threat.
Personally I think most folks under our system are being abused in terrible ways, regardless of skin color. But to view an organization based white identity as a hate group is a toxic precedent which will breed resentment and as I said before, bitterness.

Pictures of guns by themselves are all over the internet. My husband drools over them like a quarter of the population in Humboldt County.
However, there is a vast difference from having an image of a gun on a t-shirt, a vehicle, or even a flyer and attaching that same image to a flyer with the name and contact info of a pro Nazi organization with the message that every other race wants your race dead and you need to stop it. That implies heavily that violence will follow. In addition, other pieces promoted by the same organization talk about military violence.

It certainly matters when you start counting the deaths and when you stop counting them. That’s for sure. You can get wildly different numbers depending on your start and stop times.
To be clear, I wasn’t trying to say that right wing terrorists are the only causes of violence. I was just giving the study that Road Weary was likely referring to. And, in this most recent year we have information for, right power groups are the highest cause by far.
I think that view is myopic. Terrorism is a generational thing and picking a couple years here or there is an easy way to get skewed stats.
None of the terrorist homicides compare to government sponsored homicides of the last 100 years.

I find it hard to look at him seriously. Those that do seem to have extreme racial views.
Thomas Sowell takes him seriously. The statistics on current interracial violence are what they are.
Sowell also likes Rush Limbaugh…Which doesn’t speak well for his ability to judge character in my opinion. However, Sowell appears to be a very bright man that I haven’t spent much time reading.
But the stats on interracial violence run something like.
Most violent interactions happen between people of the same race. (Not surprising. We tend to hang out with people of the same race so we tend to have violent interactions most with those of the same race.)
There are however some crimes in which black people appear to commit at a higher rate than their percentage of the population would warrant.
Why is this? A lot of possibilities arise.
Some of us assume that there is inherently something wrong with black people.
Some of us assume there is something inherently wrong with our system.
I’d say there aren’t enough studies but I’d guess that slavery, poverty, racism have left marks on the culture that aren’t easy to shake off. Also, just something that seems relevant. If a white person does a crime, because there are a vastly larger amount of whites, then the white person is most likely going to commit a crime against white person. And, although most black people commit crimes against other blacks, still just because there is a greater percentage of whites, it stands to reason that whites would more often be a target of their criminal activities than vice versa.
Single parent household is the primary indicator of criminal behavior regardless of race or economic standing.

Once an incident falls off the media pages, it is rarely mentioned again. People will continue to believe what they chose to believe when they leaped to judgement. There is so little chance of learning from jumping to conclusions in error that this is like the “golden hour” when a person has a stroke- if not treated within the hour, brain damage is likely permanent.
