Don Bushnell: Father, Veteran, Surveyor

This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and your memories to [email protected].

Don BushnellDon Bushnell passed away at the age of 95 surrounded by his family at his home in Redway the morning of Sunday, June 23, 2019. He was born May 4, 1924, in Springfield, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen, grandson, Aaron Lee Thomas, and granddaughter, Jennifer Alyson Bushnell. He is survived by his children; Deborah, Martha (Jeff Peterson), Laura, (Robert Lameris), George, (Dottie), David, (Michelle), and Mary. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Julie Thomas-Steinle, Megan Bushnell, Cory Bushnell, Matthew Bushnell, Christina Bushnell, Jacob Bushnell, Cameron Peterson, Rusch Peterson, Alex Peterson, Kevin Harrison, Matt Harrison, and Trisha Harrison. He leaves several great-grandchildren; Braeden Steinle, Brooklynn and Braelynn Bushnell, and George Edwin Bushnell. He is also survived by his cousin, Sandra Christensen (Chris), of Springfield, Oregon.

Don grew up during the Depression in the Williamette Valley of Oregon hunting and fishing. He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School at the age of 16. He then attended University of Oregon for two years then at the age of 18 enlisted in the Army to serve in WWII. He trained as a technician in a reconnaissance unit, calculating distance and range for long range artillery shelling in Italy. In 1946 he mustered out as a Technical Sergeant and used the GI Bill to continue his education at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He graduated in 1947 with a degree in Forestry.

Don made his way to Northern California on the chance of a job at a mill in Korbel, near Blue Lake. There he met and married Helen, July 1, 1953. Their first 3 daughters were born in Eureka. After working for Oscar Larson as a land surveyor, he quit his job, told Helen to “pack up the 3 girls, we’re moving to Redway” where Bushnell Survey and Timber Service was born. During the lean times of starting a business together, three more little Bushnell’s came along. The survey business grew almost as fast as their six kids.

Dad’s survey jobs took him from Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, and Del Norte counties. He worked when the weather was good and bad. The family summer vacations took place wherever Dad was working. From Andersonia to Bear Harbor, the Smith Ranch north of Shelter Cove to the French Ranch in Ettersburg, Red Mountain to the State Parks near Crescent City. Mom fed the crew and family and the kids were free to explore the woods and fish the pristine streams and rivers. An idyllic way to spend any summer.

After 60 years as a Licensed Surveyor, Dad was honored by the Humboldt Chapter California Land Surveyors Association, “In recognition of and appreciation for a lifetime of service to the profession of land surveying.”

A potluck/barbeque will take place at the Bushnell home in Redway on Saturday, July 27 beginning at 2:00 p.m. All friends and family are invited. Donations can be made to Heart of the Redwoods Hospice in Garberville, or The Healy Senior Center in Redway.

Don definitely left his mark. There is hardly a piece of property in Southern Humboldt that was not surveyed by Bushnell. He and Helen defined this community more than few other people. I remember a conversation with him when he lamented that he often had to resurvey some parcels because the land in Southern Humboldt has a tendency to move around.

He and Helen raised a great Family.

I live on a parcel that was surveyed by Don in 1968. It was informative and convenient to be able to review the subdivision maps that he had in those draws in his office behind what is now Napa instead of having to travel to the county Recorder’s offices. Though I never met Don I am in awe of the amount of leg-work and dedication it took for him and his team to survey just about the entire SoHum and NorMendo area. These are some steep hills and the sheep that were on some of them must have been ferocious. (lol) RIP Don.

I’m really going to miss him. Very colorful larger than life guy. Les introduced me to him when I was just learning the ropes and I had the privilege of representing him in several matters over the years. Loved his sense of humor.

I had the privilege of meeting Don when he surveyed my property in Whale Guluch in the 70’s. He climbed on hills that were too steep to log, that I as a young woman would not traverse. I asked him to pose for this picture when the job was done. He was a bit surprised at the request, but then seemed pleased to be photographed with his trusty transit. Don was the real deal, honest, kind, strong and skilled. Condolences to his family. He certainly will be missed by many.

I just loved this wonderful man! I had the pleasure of visiting him and Mary for the day several weeks before he passed. His kindness and sense of humor was bigger than life. He was the type of man you wished you were related to. His family can be so proud. I will miss him.

Hard for me to sum up my feelings upon learning of Don’s passing. He was a mentor and friend to many of us who worked for him and with him over the years. He had high expectations for employees and family members alike and could be irascible at times if those expectations were not met on the job. We all loved him for it in the end. Land Surveying is an art form involving history, research and detective work as much as it does mathematics and technology. It can also be physically demanding and occasionally dangerous, especially on the North Coast where Don practiced for so long. Like so many veterans of his WWII generation, Don accepted those challenges as a matter of course and thrived on them. I remember him most for his humility, wit and generosity. I will also be forever in his debt for his willingness to share the vast store of accumulated practical surveying knowledge gleaned from decades of tramping through the brush of Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties searching for evidence from the field notes and plats of the oldtimers who preceded us in the nineteenth century, a few of whom proved to be inveterate liars.
To the Bushnell family, my wife Joan and I offer our sincere condolences with the certain knowledge that Don lived the fullest of lives in an upright and honorable way and was comforted and supported always by his large and loving family.

Don was no-nonsense when it came to working. There was only way to do things: the correct way. I had the pleasure of working with him in the late 60s and early 70s. We didn’t always agree on things outside of the particular job, but he let you know where he stood and you could always count on him to be faithful to the truth he lived.

Whenever I go by the old office in Garberville, which is not often now, I always remember those desks and papers in rolls and the outpouring of good, solid surveying.
