Garberville’s Little Main Street Could Get Some Big Changes

Garberville from the south.

Downtown Garberville could be in store for some big changes sometime in the next few years. The Complete Streets project was explained and discussed at a public input meeting Thursday, May 31 at the Redwood Playhouse. If funding is identified and obtained, the sidewalks will be rebuilt to modern standards with functioning wheel chair ramps and safe crosswalks. The number of parking spaces may increase, and the speed limit will almost certainly decrease. The County is beginning to design a “Complete Streets” project for the main street in Garberville, Redwood Drive. No other streets will be involved in the project.

On the 31st, business owners, Rotary members and others were invited to a presentation by Christine Anderson who is a Project Coordinator with Mark Thomas, a civil engineering company with offices in 11 California cities.

According to Wikipedia,

Complete Streets is a transportation policy and design approach that requires streets [be built to]… enable safe, convenient and comfortable travel and access for users of all ages and abilities….[and to] allow for safe travel by those walking, cycling, driving…or delivering goods.

Christine Anderson gave a presentation before the group broke up and visited various tables which were staffed either by herself, Supervisor Fennell, or Humboldt County Engineering staff from the Public Works Department.

Anderson began by telling the room about coming to assess Garberville this past winter. Then she showed slides from three projects completed in other California cities, and then presented options for the Garberville project.

The Complete Streets project itself will only impact what locals would call “main street” and includes the roadway and both its sidewalks. It does not include Sprowl Creek Road nor any of the side streets.

In her remarks, Supervisor Fennel said that among the benefits of a Complete Streets project is the fact that the entire project has to meet compliance standards. The County of Humboldt remains under a 2016 Consent Decree with the United States government due to its wide spread non-compliance with the ADA.

However, the potential for changes to other streets in Garberville does seem to be in the air. A couple of business owners huddled with Supervisor Estelle Fennell after the meeting, looking at the map of Garberville and talking about the possibilities of making a one-way circuit around a single block to reduce congestion both in the alley on the west side of the Town Square and on Locust on its east side where Locust becomes too narrow for both two-way traffic and parking.

For the Complete Streets proposal, Anderson began by talking about her observation of Garberville’s activity and personality.

Perhaps because the dozens of townships and neighborhoods of Southern Humboldt are not visible from town, she was clearly surprised by the level of activity she saw in the little tiny town of Garberville. Anderson said,

This is a really vibrant, progressive community. There is a lot of activity. There is a lot of hustle and bustle; a lot of people moving about the space, a lot of cars, a ton of cars, and a lot of [people] parking.

I was kind of surprised because a lot of downtowns of this nature and this size say they need parking, but there’s actually no one parked there, but [here] people actually use the parking. So its actually really amazing to me.

Then she highlighted the details of the town that stood out to her,

There are a lot of interesting spaces going on. There’s a lot of hand made elements, hand crafted; there’s a lot of other things too, like I said, a progressive attitude as well. There’s electric vehicle charging stations. There’s no requirement to have those. ….That’s pretty interesting, and it supports tourism because if people know there’s electric car charging stations, then they are going to stop there.

However, Anderson also had a list of issues she found concerning beginning with the sidewalks,

There’s limited pedestrian facilities, there’s a good sidewalk, but there’s a lot of trip hazard on the sidewalk.

She repeated, “There’s a lot of problems with the sidewalk, it’s…” She trailed off looking for the right words. She then brought up a slide of the crosswalk at Feather Rose on Melville which terminates next to a rosebush and into a very tall curb on the west side of the street in front of the Lone Pine and said with a giggle in her voice,

A little bit about safety, ummm, we took this picture; I can’t even believe this; you know, we do have this thing in the world called the American’s with Disabilities Act, but how does a pedestrian actually cross a street into a shrub and get onto the sidewalk safely?

She mentioned other accessibility barriers that she observed.

There’s also poles in the middle of a [curb] ramp, … utilities at a specific grade so its not allowing [access onto the ramps].

Anderson then began to talk about the road and its characteristics,

Of course it’s a big, wide roadway. It’s 86 feet from curb to curb. That is a wide, wide road. So there’s a lot of opportunity in that fact. It’s a heavily traveled roadway.

The magnitude of the construction project being planned came into focus when she added,

It’s an old roadway that is difficult to maintain because it has what’s called ‘a concrete cap’ underneath it from the old state highway. There’s also need for serious underground infrastructure improvements. We already know that there is a lot of areas that have drainage at a high point instead of at a low point, so there’s problems in that area.

Referencing some driving behaviors she had seen and predicting how road conditions contribute to them Anderson said,

The wide street does favor traffic because people want to drive faster. We noticed that an awful lot of people coming off the northbound, into town, off ramp [do not slow down] until they get to the first intersection at Melville; then they [slow down hard,] then they slow down through the rest of [town;] then, when they get to Conger street, they speed up again. And in fact, [just before the turn down into Dazey’s Building Supply] there’s a 40 mph speed limit sign on [the right]side of the road and a 25 mph sign on the other. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s actually happening there.

Then with a sound of concern in her voice, she said, “We actually did see [people] jaywalking throughout the area.”

The needs of tourists arose frequently. Tourism is being courted by the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitor’s Bureau as an adjunct to the marijuana economy in hopes it will bring a new legal flow of buyers into the region.

Anderson said the signage needs work to help people find their way,

You wouldn’t think this would be a problem because it’s a straight roadway, [but] it’s really difficult to figure out how to get back on the freeway.”

Using a photograph of Redwood Dr. taken from the sidewalk up by the Woodrose, facing toward the Sprowl Creek stop sign, she said,

You can see for the middle one… [the sign to turn left to access the southbound 101] is obstructed by another sign and a tree.

Anderson suggested visitor kiosks,

Right now you have a nice thing that says “Garberville” [on the 101]. It would be really nice if the visitor could have someplace to stop safely and be able to understand and navigate where they are going, have a map, know where there’s [restaurants or fuel stations] instead of having to drive and look around for things. Because that makes for very difficult way-finding.

Her project map showed suggestions for placing such kiosks at both ends of town.

To give context and an understanding of what is possible, Anderson showed slides and explained three Complete Streets projects that she had drawn elements from for her design suggestions for Garberville. These projects were in Lancaster, CA, Seaside, CA and Pacific Grove, CA. Notably, all three of those projects were part of much larger downtown areas which provide multiple alternate streets drivers can take to avoid congestion. In Garberville, the only street parallel to Redwood Drive is Locust.

After showing slides of these example projects and very clearly explaining that nothing is yet set in stone and further assuring the audience that their input is important to the process, Anderson talked about the ways a Complete Streets project might look starting with the north and south ends of town,

What we’re thinking is, and it’s just an idea, is to use the Seaside, CA [model] where you have parking on both sides of the street, with bike lanes from the offramp on the south side to Melville Drive; then go into a Pacific Grove kind of scenario, where you have angled parking on both sides, and angled parking in the center from Melville Drive all the way to Conger Drive; and then go back to two lanes of traffic, bike lane on each side and parallel parking, with a 12 foot drive lane on either side from Conger to the north end of town. This would really slow traffic down. I propose that if you do this, right now the posted speed limit is 25, this would slow traffic.  In Pacific Grove, the speed limit is 15mph. This would slow traffic down immensely because they’d have to watch.

She explained the benefits of her suggestions,

It allows for bike lanes to come into the area and stop at Melville and Conger and Sprowl Creek Road. It also allows for visitors to really understand where they are…”

Pointing to the row of nose to nose angled parking between the opposing lanes of traffic, she said,

that central spine would allow for delivery vehicles, in time-limited [zones], could stop in that central parking area to make their deliveries.

And then she got peppered with feedback. People generally felt that trucks do not come to Garberville on a tight enough schedule to be allowing others to park there and block off the delivery trucks’ access.

Supervisor Fennell stood to calm the waters a bit. She said,

We are talking about parking down the middle,… with parking on the side as well….. [T]his is a town where people like to walk across the street without using a lights and all that sort of stuff, so if you’ve got just one lane to cross to get in the middle it’s much safer and more welcoming as a walkable community than if you’ve got a wide stretch that is essentially the width of a highway. So that’s part of making it more of a hangout downtown … Can we do that? Is that the right vision for Garberville? Or is Garberville going to remain just a pass through kind of place?

When asked if the traffic flow had been studied enough to count the number of cars passing through and to understand how much time a local driver from Shelter Cove or Alderpoint Rd. might need to get through town to access the Sprowl Creek onramp under such a scenario, Anderson said,

This project is to understand what kind of concepts there might be out there, to understand how we might be able to arrange the geometry of the space. Then the next phase would be to study the traffic, so any other environmental studies, [because] traffic is part of that environmental study and then [we will] do preliminary engineering. that’s all part of that next phase.

One of the County Public Works Engineers reassured the room adding,

[A] traffic study would focus on what the current traffic use is right now, what the number of [cars is,] and it would also project 20 years into the future what that traffic would look like. So if we were to make these lanes too narrow, in say ten years, it would be so congested that it would be hard to get people from the Alderpoint area onto southbound 101, but that traffic study is after this.

After the main presentation, people had a chance to speak with Fennel, County Engineers, and the project designer at a handful of tables. People gave their feedback verbally and in writing. The discussions were lively and interactive with people putting up post-it notes on the maps. Dennis O’Sullivan was concerned about the centerline parking from a firefighting perspective. He said that the broad street currently allows for fire crews to safely stage when they need to fight a fire.

Bootleg owner, Michelle Bushnel did not feel trucks had to deliver from the center line. She said she gets multiple deliveries a day, and she felt truck parking could be made available at each end of the block. She described a future with properly designed sidewalks on which hand trucks rolled safely and smoothly. And she added, “I cross the street a lot. I’ll feel safer if I don’t have to peek around trucks to [avoid] getting run over.”

Anderson and Fennell both repeatedly said that this Complete Street project will take a long time to move forward and that nothing will change this year and that there will be plenty of public input opportunities.

One significant hurdle to overcome will be funding. Anderson said,

But we need to make sure that this project, as well as any other project that comes along, has not only the funding for construction but also funding for longterm maintenance. Because if there’s no [maintenance] funding, this will be just a nicely constructed project that will fall apart.

Note: You can help by filling out this survey on Garberville’s Complete Streets Project. The survey will be open for a few more days. They’re trying to get feedback on the project. Here’s the link:

The Main Street definitely would not work with a Middle Lane for unloading and loading trucks has the potential for backing up traffic coming in from the north unless you make everybody Park parallel to the curb which would limit the parking that is already Beyond its limit it will make it so dangerous for cars trying to pull out. That many accidents would occur maybe you need to spend about a million dollars on figuring out how to leave well enough alone

As someone who drives up 101 to Florence, OR every year from the Bay Area, I have been surprised that Garberville does not make more of an effort to get tourists off the freeway and into the city to spend their money at cafes, motels, and stores. If you can get the homeless off the sidewalks and make the city seem safe from open drug sales, in my view that would be the first thing to do.

Funny how there is no mention of the insane amount of homeless people on drugs . I saw some dude in the bushes down at dazeys building center nodding off in a patch of poison oak. If this is what a “ super progressive “ town looks like i want to be no part of it. I like some of the ideas , and improvements are always a good thing but you gotta do something about the bums . The cops have their hands tied unfortunately. I’d like to say more but i gotta go to work.

Thank you for saying that Roe. We so easily turn our heads to the real social issues that plague our community and are a real epidemic in our community. Nice sidewalks will not fix our mental health, homelessness and drug and alcohol abuse epidemic. Yet another confirmation that our County Supervisors priorities are miss-guided and morally corrupt. I wonder when Estelle is going to resign and endorse Josh Sweet for Supervisor? Seem like those cards have been in the works for a while to me. And don’t bother bringing up the future of our children, they will figure it out.

Kym, why does “pos” stand in this Guy’s comment, rather than being edited out? I don’t understand why commenters are allowed to use such slurs against well-known private citizens. Only insults against others using this site are blanked out—anyone else can be slurred and slandered by anonymous jackals? Unfortunate.

Bonnie, I’d like it if everyone refrained from insults, but, as I’ve said before, American law holds that public figures have less protection from insult, satire, libel than others. I try to follow that historical tradition that allows cartoons, satires, insults of/about Trump, Obama, Hilary, Jerry Falwell, Beyonce, small town politicians, the local large business owner etc. It is a way for the powerless to release tensions at the more powerful.

I once saw & heard him crack a bunch of homeless jokes, in a full room. He and a few of his friends thought it was funny but he made the rest of the room, uncomfortable & was completely unaware he did so or just didn’t care.
I never met such a two faced person before, oh wait I have, her Name was Estelle. Not surprised seeing them pictured together.

Sad to say you are so right about the dynamic duo of Fennel and Sweet. It kinda breaks my heart. I was overjoyed when Estelle won back in 2012. We were friends and I admired her. She promised CHANGE and boy did we get it! Back then Josh was just another uber-wealthy grower. Now he’s in line to continue all those promised changes while the rest of us hang on to our meager savings and wonder what the hell is gonna happen next…

And where are the funds for this project going to come from?

I would not call Garberville a robust business environment, or even a logical place to build a business!

There are Truck Stops on I-5 with more economic activity, culture, and services…

It IS nice that they can charge an electric car, I guess, but driving an E-Vehicle into “the void of Humboldt” is an essentially futile and stupid act… And just to build sidewalks with ramps, in Garberville, will take until 2025.

Garberville: The problem with your town is the fact that it is clogged with gigantic pickups, homeless people, and persons living in the streets of your town in vans and campers and RV’s! You can’t even park (reliably) at Chataqua, to go to the Farmer’s market, can barely drive there at all, over the narrow and crumbling streets ,or, actually, transport yourself and park to do anything at all in Garberville…

The best thing to do here, is put a large parking area at the North end, and at the South end. Make people walk, in Garberville, make the “downtown” between Conger and Sproul Creek, into a Mall. Make all the other streets One-Way.

The main trouble with Garberville, is, it’s set up all wrong… The South entrance to town is a steep ramp, and there’s no Northbound exit off 101… Garberville is just a big old mess, that nobody can fix, given the layout of the town.

I know, start a NEW town, a little farther North, like up by Philiipsville! Or hell, you dope farmers, just BUY Phillipsville, bulldoze the whole damn place, move everyone from GBV to Phillipsville, rename it, um, “Dopetown”
and lay out a City that is Navigable, and where EVERYTHING is new!! Hell, build apartments, a shopping mall, bars, restaurants, a REAL Hospital, have goods and services appropriate to a new town, and, heck, have a Truck Stop too!

Then Bulldoze Garberville once and for all… Turn over the rubble to the rabble of Homeless, let the Spanish Trimmers live permanently in the old Ray’s Parking lot, since they like it there so much, and, just think, you will never have to worry about walking through the fog of pot smoke, or stepping on the dog poop encrusting the sidewalks, or have to encounter psychotic tweaker crazies in the streets of your lovely crappy town again!

Also, it seems comical that Garberville thinks the “downtown” will “regenerate” or “renew”, since in 5 years they couldn’t even tear down the old Veteran’s hall, or rebuild a Church, or, fix the filthy hospital…

Yes, do business in beautiful treeless Garberville! Buy any drug on Earth down at the Motel, 24/7/365! Get shot, stabbed, dosed with clap, and die in the filthy ER, all in the same night! Remember, there’s no bank, cops, recognizable form of Civic Government or decent healthcare, no place to live, and, in Summer it’s hot, and in Winter, it’s cold and rainy and isolated to the point where suicide seems like a good option… And, it’s nearly impossible to drive through, park, or do much of anything else…

Garberville: Just don’t go there…

Or maybe by “folks” who have been marginalized and excluded by the cool movers and greedheads.

Garberville is like living in the 3rd world.

Never forget Kathy Epling’s fondness for the town, thinking it beautiful and whatnot. Man…I never had access to good enough drugs to make me ignore the blight and dishearting obvious struggle with poverty by too many town residents, the housed and the not housed…contrasted by the great displays of gratuitous wealth flaunted by the hill folk, *greenrushers* disguised as gangsters from LA.

The setting is gorgeous tho.

There used to be economic activity and culture and services…a cool bookstore on a side street, a great ice cream parlor with arcade games and a heart for young folks, a fun toy store, a bead store, women selling hand-dyed dresses on the sidewalk…all appealing to familes with kids, whether locals, vacationers from now-closed Benbow campground, or people passing through on a longer journey.

It could be that again. This might help.

Mainstreet in Garberville is no different than a lot of the country. The town hasn’t been a tourist destination since the freeway became the new 101 in ’74’. Empty store fronts are as much about Amazon and internet competition than how many street people hang out here. If J.C. Penny and Sears don’t make it how can the local clothing stores hang on. Ive been working on Redwood Drive for almost 40 years and have not seen any real drop off in tourists. We are not a destination we are a pit stop. The town is not dead. When you can’t find a parking place its not about zombies. We could use a few more restaurants on summer Sunday afternoons. And lack of restroom access is a problem. All I know is when I come home from a trip or vacation I am coming home to a place as beautiful as anyplace I’ve been .

“And where are the funds for this project going to come from?”

~maybe we could tap into their hopeful pensions:

This is a detailed summary of CalPERS’ financial standing through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018.
The CAFR by the Numbers

1. $354 billion: That is our net assets (also known as the net position) figure for the fiscal year for the Public Employees’ Retirement Fund, an increase of nearly $28 billion compared to the previous fiscal year.
2. 8.6 percent: This is our fiscal year investment net return in the Public Employees’ Retirement Fund. This is the ninth consecutive year of positive returns.
3. 2,892: This is the number of employers we contract with for pension benefits.
4. 1,958,888: All of us—the total number of CalPERS members.
5. 1,462,260: Members and their families covered in the CalPERS health program.
6. $22.9 billion: Benefits paid out to 694,570 retirees and beneficiaries. This is an increase of approximately $1.5 billion from the previous fiscal year.

The full 2017-18 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (PDF) is available online for your reading pleasure. You can also find our Public Agency Valuation Reports in Forms & Publications on the CalPERS website.

~as far as i can tell, police and firefighters have, or did have, retirement accounts set up within the city or county finance dept. Teachers – retirements aren’t CalPers. I’m referring to public servants. Public Service was never meant to be a career. There are term limits, and age limits on some (police -45, if i remember correctly). Bass has been at it, what? 25 years? (yes, the blame rests on we the peeps’ shoulders). Let them pay into social security, and their own medical and auto insurance like the rest of us. I MEAN, it’s not like we’re looking at them and saying, “Job well done”! “Thanks for the taxation without representation”.

CalPers is second to the U.S. Inc., in investing. CalPers Global. Their website is nauseating. I didn’t check this year’s bazillion pages of investments. Past years showed a mere 23% invested in California.

If McDonalds Inc., went belly-up, would you, or me, be the debtors? The national debt topic isn’t more than a “look, look, over here”, on a raped, pillaged, plundered and poisoned planet. Meanwhile, Humboldt County is occupied by foreign (to the Constitution), entities, trespassing on American soil. I.E. traitors! So – pension for these poor disconnected souls? NO.

All very nice. But it seems to me there are many more important things needing to be done in SoHum with the limited budgets available before we spiff up Garberville?. For instance: our homeless problem- how about facilities and places for them to live? And what about our collapsing economy? Shouldn’t we be looking at ways to ease the transition from the boom of illegal pot to whatever the future is going to hold for our area? And our roads! What about our roads? Most of them are just one winter storm away from being impassable. And then there are our schools; outdated facilities and areas no longer served by school busses. Let’s get our priorities straight before we think about making Garberville more tourist and traffic friendly.

It might help if ‘they’ (whomever that is) started to fill up the vacant business sites along Redwood Drive. Mostly on the east side of the street. Perhaps the old BofA building could become the First Cannabis Savings & Loan. It probably still has the safe deposit vault in tact where customers could stash their stash. How about more coffee shoppes? Never enough of them. Renaming all the streets to reflect the new cannabis friendly attitude of the County could help with tourism. Imagine snapping your selfie at the corner of Reefer St & Emerald Dr. or, Blunt Lane & North Locoweed Ave. and sending it back to mom. Possibilities are endless.

Travel, and than come back through Garberville. NO other town in California with g villes population has Vagrant, drug addict, homeless, bum problem like Garberville. There’s days i count 30 vagrants (visible) on the streets. We don’t even Have a stop light! We have “towns” under bridges, behind schools and right over rivers where these people dump trash ,start fires, dump needles, and human feces into our water . It’s disgusting and disturbing. But hey, When Bernie takes office , all of this will be fixed! Lol. Free government cheese and needles for everyone! Yyeeeaahhhh

If Bernie gets elected well have more freeloaders on the streets.
Every one of his supporters will be lined up for a handout.

Handouts for people in the street – heck yeah!

No more handouts for rich people and corporations. Imagine a world where apple, google, ge, trump, bezos, goldman sachs, musk, fb, hunt bros paid ANY taxes. Instead of getting rich while the middle class pays for their golden toilet handles. These ole white guys are ripping you off too, but you don’t care as long as they legitimate hate for non-whites.

Damn we could give everyone in the unites states, illegal or not, a million dollars and have plenty left over for sex change operation and a new prius if these crooks paid taxes.

Not true. My hometown in the Bay was a little sleepy farm town. It’s now plagued with homeless, forclousures, job loss & addicts. Not far from there, is Walnut Creek. Every underpass is filled with tent cities. Unheard of there, once upon a time. Maybe take a vacation, get out of this lil area more before you compare it worst in comparison to the rest of the state.

I stopped and spent night in garberville about two years ago. Hmmmm this whole road thing is ridiculous. Good road and good crosswalks wouldn’t bring me back. It’s a dead town. Way way past bringing it to a money making tourist town. The “way of life” of marijuana came and left leaving this town ruined. Trimmers still flock there thinking there is work. People stuck living on streets with no where to go. Vacant run down buildings which make everything uninviting. People go there and are never seen again. Do not know answer, but not sure removing a bush on a sidewalk is answer. Maybe start by getting a police substation placed in town. Use this money to do something that can be annual to attract tourists. Start small and use funds raised to fix things in order of importance. This town won’t be brought back in a year or probably even 10 .

There is and always has been a sheriff’s substation in Garberville. It went un-staffed for awhile, which didn’t help the problems. It is now staffed on a part-time basis, and the thieves and dope sellers know exactly what their schedule is. Maybe work on getting 24/7 law enforcement might be a priority before making town even more attractive to street people?

Things are way better than before.
Our Sub Station is finally fully staffed now and SoHum does have 24/7 coverage. Plus as a local business owner , I have been really appreciating their foot patrols around town.
They have been really friendly and good at checking in with our local community “on the street” . Plus they patrol at nite and even leave their cards on the business doors.

I would like to see Locust street between Chautauqua and conger become one way. It’s extremely dangerous and difficult with two way traffic there, especially when cars are parked on both sides and especially on Friday’s. My car has almost been hit several times, and most everyone who parks in front of the houses between Chautauqua and the courthouse has had their car hit at some point. It should be one way, northbound.

Back to the subject of the presentation. The idea of angled parking in the middle of Redwood Dr. was proposed as far back as the mid-80s and quickly dropped because of the truck delivery issue. I don’t believe dedicated truck parking at the ends of the block is practical, because it’s not easy to maneuver a large truck into what would inevitably be a small area that would eliminate much of the proposed middle parking. So that idea should be dropped immediately. I agree that the wide main street encourages people to drive too fast. Also that the 40 mph limit going south should be extended to the beginning of the northbound on-ramp to Hwy 101. And that the sidewalks need to be modernized and brought up to ADA standards.

As for Redwood Dr. itself, what would be wrong with doing what was done in Redway, adding a turn (and for Garberville a temporary truck parking) lane in the middle? The narrowing of the driving lanes might encourage some to slow down and also ease the problems turning left from the southbound lane of Redwood Dr. This would also give jaywalkers a mid-point to pause (and let’s face it, this is a behavior that has been going on for decades on Redwood Dr. and will never be controlled). Better marked crosswalks and one of those solar-powered lights that tell you your real speed at each end of town would be welcome additions as well.

Finally there are many parking spaces just off Redwood Dr. that are rarely used. You can now park in front of the old VFW/court building any time. And nobody seems to park at the end of Locust St. near Ray’s. Visitors, of course, don’t know of these spaces, but locals do and don’t use them.

I love the center street parking idea but it will impact driveways for the local business. I watched Garberville Ambulance trying to get on Redwood dr. north bound almost get broadsided because of the Trucks that park in the center and block the driveways. You can not see what is coming from the south when pulling out, and you have to get in the oncoming lane to turn in. I hope the truck Co.’s have deep pockets, as they are parked across a double yellow line making them at fault. CHP seems to ignore this problem no surprise there.

i think most are missing the point of this whole project. it isnt to make everyones lives better it is to create bike lanes at the expense of car and truck traffic so thst it is easier to ride a bike than deal with traffic. however g ville is the worst place for bike lanes as most who vone into g ville drive to long and normally transporting more than just themselves.
these people come in sell the glam talking about sprousing up the town etc however once a bike lane is in place it all goes to shit quick only thing that changes is whomever is responsible for maintaining the road must also maintain the bike lane and if it is ever unsafe or people getting ran over the bike lane take prroity over cars and trucks undet the fair access clause. No kidding i know of a law suite that was settled out of coury by a state for failing to maintain a bike lane during one of the worst winters inthst area in history. yes folks snow removal will be required or else you can be sued.

Exactly. Plus, on top of that, is that most people don’t realize it’s not a ‘local’ thang, it’s a Globalist thang. The Foreign nations have decided how local’s shall live. The Local govts receive ‘incentives’ when they ‘implement’ the globalist plan. It used to be called agenda 21, then agenda 30 and now they call it Climate Emergency due to too many people awakening. (they keep changing the name of the game, but not the game).
The bike lanes are just a prelude to what’s to come. It’s just one of the steps in the non-original plan.
Sure, it would be nice to have bike lanes wherever they ‘fit’ and from our own local endeavors. But theses ‘agenda’ plans are no way ‘local’. They’re obligatory to a foreign govt.

Check out Ireland lately. They’re gung-ho on banning private cars. (they’re implementing that part of the ‘plan’ already, and hopefully the people will rise up against such nonsense).

“Our approach will be to nudge people and businesses to change behaviour and adapt new technologies through incentives, disincentives, regulations and information,” the globalist prime minister said.
Yep, you read that right. For those who didn’t, just replace ‘incentives’ with bonus $, disincentives with higher costs for gas and driver’s ins plus purchases, regulations with if you drive it you get fined, and info with propaganda about how you’re saving the planet.

So, unless our tourists are only bicycle riders, there won’t be any tourist season at all anymore. Many already avoid Cali like the plague, due to the high gas prices and policies.

But, hey, maybe Estelle is ‘different’ from the rest of the supes across America who are implementing globalist agendas in exchange for the ka-ching. Maybe, just maybe, she also has a zoning plan for homeless, the spot-less, and the tourists from all walks of life. Maybe there really are unicorns out there.

I believe Jaywalking is actually crossing the street in the middle of the block instead of using the designated crosswalks.

What Constitutes Jaywalking? California Vehicle Code 21955 contains the state’s main jaywalking law. It states “pedestrians shall not cross the roadway at any place between adjacent controlled intersections except in a crosswalk.”Aug 20, 2018

CA. Inc’s Code books contain codes, NOT law.

Have you ever driven a “motor vehicle” in your life? Most of us haven’t, yet our names are on record as being professional motor vehicle drivers and our private property cars and trucks have been registered as “common carriers” (taxi, bus),— public conveyances belonging to the State of CA., organization running this Code scam.

Yet, if you insist that yours is a private auto, you will face constant harassment and racketeering efforts by clueless “state patrolmen” and traffic court personnel. This is the very definition of “organized crime”.

Great reporting! Some thoughts on the topic. The topic is redesigning the roads and sidewalks of our little town. The homeless situation is indeed an important topic and influences how our town looks etc., but this isn’t about that. There are folks, including Estelle, who are working on that aspect. And our fabulous ERCP is doing an amazing job cleaning up the mess. For the folks who seem to think we have gone from bad to worse, think of this. We now have a town square with a public bathroom. Besides the excellent farmers’ market we now have movie nights, classes and kids’ activities there. We have a wonderful new restaurant, Souji House, and two great food trucks. Progress is being made on the old bank, and now their windows have children’s art in them. We have a very active and successful new visitors’ bureau. The chamber of commerce has improved a great deal. The bookstore has been replaced by Ganas, a community space where there are classes and other activities. Soon Paul Schmollinger and Saundra will be teaching music there. Even the new cig shop looks okay. If you don’t like Josh Sweet, consider what he has accomplished. The remodel of the building that houses Sweet Grass, Cecils and other businesses. He spearheaded he acquisition of the movie theater, which will never be a sound financial investment, so it’s really a gift from him and the other people who contributed. He also owns old bank and although progress is slow, the plans look great. But, I digress. I think the slower the better is good for the speed limit. I think a priority should be the sidewalks. They are dangerous! I’m surprised no-one has sued the county after being injured when tripping over or into one of the potholes. Main St is also hazardous because of all the potholes. Fire safety is really really important! Estelle said last year that Garberville is a prime spot for a terrible fire to sweep through, as bad as Paradise!!. We have to have this as a vital part of our planning, that there is adequate access to water for fire trucks etc.

I am really appreciative of all the hard work and dedication that Estelle has put into this. And I really thank the community members who are putting their heart and soul into improving our little town. Thank You!

The county is doing this for ADA .They are required by the Judge who gave them till next year. This is the same reason they are renting the building in Redway. Their building in Garberville is in disrepair and not ADA compliant. They are required buy a court order being ignored for years. They have to spend millions getting all their violations fixed buy next year. I bet their hoping the judge will let them slide if they show some progress. The sidewalks in Garberville are one of the violations. Don’t hold your breath on any road repairs coming to a road near you any time soon.

I and many people were at the the meeting that Supervisor Fennell initiated and presented to our community .there were county staff there as well as the architect and her team taking input from our community.
The only “press” that showed up to this historic meeting was Kelly.
Seems like the pic used was intentional to instigate the predictable negative comments by the same anonymous person.
HOWEVER, There was a LOT of positive engagement and ideas and discussions…..
Where are all of those pics showing all of that and of all of the people looking at the maps and info and giving input? As a local business owner I am very excited that this could happen for our town.

What this town needs is a monorail. From Richardson Grove to Redway, with stops in Benbow and Garberville.

And speed bumps. What this town needs are speed bumps, to slow down the traffic coming off of NB 101.

And tourism Kiosks. This town needs tourism kiosks for the homeless, at each end of town. The sunny side shall feature a map of the area and printed tourism flyers, while supporting a few dozen hammocks in the shade.

And public bathrooms for the indigent. This town needs public bathrooms, too.

And lighted crosswalks. This town needs crosswalks that blink and glow in cadence with the pedestrian footsteps.

And accessibility ramps without so many poles in the way. Like she said, this town needs accessibility ramps without so many poles in the way.

But mostly, what this town really needs, is a monorail.

Southern Garberville? Not exactly. Our homeless population is far smaller, even though our population is over twice the size of Garberville and Redway combined.
Caltrans also did a good job of improving the downtown corridor after the completion of the bypass. And while there is still empty storefronts, our economy was never as dependent on pot cultivation as Garberville’s. We have our problems, but looking like a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic hellscape isn’t one of them…

And, Willits is not measurably different from GBV, even though it does have some cops cruising around in circles while ignoring everything, and the hospital in Willits is just as dysfunctional and strangely operated by it’s own form of zombies… And don’t worry, Adventist Health is coming to Humboldt to take over all your hospitals…

Yes, Willits is JUST like Garberville, and, Willits is an actual town, with government and everything…

Still can’t get real sushi there, and there’s the same percentage of pot farmers, street tweakers and crusty old-farts –

Let’s just call GBV a “suburb of Willits”, and let it go at that. So, Garbervillians, remember, when your town creaks to a halt, the last business closed, the last old house sinks into the ground, and the orange plastic fence goes up for good, you can move to Willits, lovely Willits, and you will feel RIGHT at home.

Hopefully, the Monorail will survive.

Since we are praising Caltrans, I enjoy the fact that Willitsians fought so hard against the bypass, and for so long, that Caltrans did not give Willits an exit/entrance by the new hospital, in an amazing act of “go screw yourself, Willits”…

Willits is the town I am happy to be able to never go to, and so is Garberville!

Here’s an idea:

When we build something new, it makes people hopeful.
When everything is in decay, the people decay along with the place.

In Garberville, nothing is ever new, and the town is not evolving. It is “what you have”…

Also, whenever something is proposed or necessary, the folks there hire a consultant.

This kind of thinking is wasteful, and, just broken.

AND: Folks like Mr Kirby will sit there and tell you that “it’s beautiful”… That’s an interesting human trait, when a man married for 45 years looks at his wife and she still looks attractive!

Anyway, yes, when forced to fix the sidewalk, fix the sidewalk.

And, for your information, I raised 2 kids, both educated, both have great careers. Fine people, contributing to society…

They don’t grow pot, and, they think Garberville “is creepy”…

Gville over grew itself for sure. I even got to the point thinking it needed a stop light on locus street. And that was a sad thought. Sometimes Gville fills like an overused truck stop with crazies at every turn. I want to see Gville beautification efforts, I just think that it’s a little miss use of funds and energy with all the complications of the economy. The homeless epidemic is off the hook. I seriously wonder how so many homeless found thier way to GVille. I think Gville needs more creative fun things, and I appreciate the volunteers who patrol. I would like to see a hostel in town. That might help to Aleveate some of the homeless. I have definitely had the thought about moving whole town.. lol.. The homeless, and drug use epidemic is a big one. That is proving to be a very big issue for any community at the moment. I think also, if some of the Hotels, improved their outdated signs, and made them look nice It wouldn’t be so slummy…. Seriously too.. look at the Fung Shei of the energy flow. It just runs right thew the middle of town, then out. Maybe a traffic circle in the middle MIGHT help. I actually don’t like traffic circles at all.. but the Feng shei does need a little help. I think a traffic circle is more sightly than a stoplight. And a few simple small water features in town, with native landscaping? But, for me, I think the town needs more color, it’s so dull and lifeless, bright colors are an awesome way to brighten up any town. Oh, and I luv the wind mill water fountain. Please do not remove that in a quest for “sidewalks” that thing is so cool! And the gas stations in town should be asked to put in some landscaping. They have money to do it, and would provide jobs. That empty lot at th end of town should be made into something and utilized, it’s empty dead space, and it needs some life.. G luck Gville!

Garberville missed a great chance, in the mid-80s, to make itself aesthetically very interesting when some business owners successfully shot down a plan (drawn up by Bushnell and Associates) in which the center of ‘main street’ would have been planted with islands of trees and foliage. Would have been beautiful! I’d still like to see that plan realized.
