UPDATE 11:01 a.m.: Press release from the CHP:

On June 18, 2019, at approximately 4:40 am, Lavell Billingsly was driving a 2019 Volvo Semi Truck towing a box trailer, traveling northbound on US-101, north of Reynolds Hwy. For reasons still under investigation, the Volvo veered to the right and off the east roadway edge. Mr. Billingsley attempted to correct the Volvo, but he lost control and collided with the embankment. As a result, the trailer slid across the highway and came to rest blocking all of 101, at that location. US-101 was shut down for approximately 2 hours for the recovery and clean up of the scene. Mr. Billingsly was not injured in the collision and DUI did not appear to be a factor.

California Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control and the road closure.

Sealy should definitely incorporate this photo into their advertising: Our mattresses are so relaxing they even put our drivers to sleep.

The article says it was a 63’ trailer. STAA trucks are NOT supposed to drive through Richardson Grove. The driver was obviously headed to a main population center (Eureka or further north) with that load, so the driver would have had to drive through Richardson Grove. As many of us suspected, these BIG trucks are already driving through the Grove even though they are not allowed (unless they have an exemption or are escorted by CHP).

Where was the truck headed? It cannot be Eureka because Richardson Grove. Or if it was going south, where did it come from. It cannot have been Eureka, because Richardson Grove. I was recently reprimanded by a commenter for suggesting that that stretch of 101 is quite commonly traversed by STAA trucks which are legally prohibited😎

There is a person with small trucks that are legal that transports stuff through the grove.

53′ trailer, not 63′. 63′ trailers are not legal, and only built for specialty loads that are transported under permit, with pilot cars.
