[UPDATE: GOOD NEWS] $1000 Taken From Southern Humboldt Little League Just as They Prepare to Host All-Star Tournament

Baskets

The large basket was stolen along with the Little League money.

Yesterday evening, someone picked up a basket containing $1000 from the Southern Humboldt Little League snack shack deposit money. [The basket is much like the largest one in the image above but with burgundy as well as light and dark brown rings.]

The money had been set aside from funds gathered over several days of parents selling food and other items. According to Alyssa Deleon, the snack snack coordinator for the group, she had given it to the treasurer. The treasurer and her son were finishing up the final chores and drove off. When stopped at the gas station, they realized the basket was gone.

They aren’t sure exactly what happened. Perhaps the basket containing the money was put down beside the car and picked up by someone else later or perhaps it was stolen from the vehicle.

“The treasurer and her husband drove around and looked and asked,” DeLeon explained. Several street people promised to keep a lookout, she said. “I’m hoping and, I think we are all hoping, that someone will hear and bring it back. [The money was] going for a good cause….Maybe someone grabbed it and will feel guilty if they realize what it was.”

She explained that the League is supposed to be hosting the 12-Year-Old All Star team. “We’re hosting with a really strong team. There will be kids there from Klamath, Trinity, Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville. This is going to affect kids from all over.”

Kristy Murphy, sponsorship coordinator explained. “[W]e need that money to file tournament fees and get uniforms.” Murphy explained that the teams and their families are expected to “bring in a lot of tourist money but we do need to set up money to host these things.”

Both Murphy and DeLeon said that they are struggling as the Little League’s snack shack and bathrooms have been vandalized repeatedly this year.

“We have surveillance camera over the snack shack,” DeLeon said. “We’re trying to put more cameras up but it takes parents’ involvement but we’re going to have to do that.”

If anyone has any information, please contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 923-2761.

If anyone would like to help, the Little League has an account at the
Community Credit Union of Southern Humboldt and their account number is 115021.

You are making a huge assumption here. I hope you realize that. Go back and read the story again.

We have to be hyper-vigilant these days. We have to lock our cars, keep our wallets in sight, and not leave a basket with $1000 in it unattended. I’m sorry for this loss. It’s terrible for everyone involved, but I have to say that so many people are not taking the necessary precautions, especially if in charge of that amount of money. I do hope they get it back.

🕯🌳Its summer time. Alot of people have asked what I’ve meant by that and have even called into question the fact that the first day of actually summer isn’t till June 21st, well the explanation is simple. Since the beginning of summer vacation for students certain types of crimes have risen as they do every year. I look at it as poor parental guidance.

For many K – 12 students summer vacation doesn’t start for a couple more weeks.

🕯🌳It’s been starting all over the county, week by week. And it’s just the idea that this is how it is around here. Uncontrolled youth.

Yea well there are other reasons crime spikes this time of year and it has nothing to do with kids. It’s the end of the rains and our seasonal homeless junkie population explodes again. Yup it goes down when the kids go back to school because it’s raining like hell and the junkies leave for the winter

sounds like they need a better process for handling and storing cash. this is an expensive lesson.

When does money get left in big basket? A treasurer/staff would have a “CASH DRAWER or deposit bag” to put the money in for safe keeping and transport. So when does a person become assigned to a very important task-guard the money and fail horribly?
No one takes on treasurer responsibilities without 100% commitment to your duties and protection of assets. This entire scenario sticks rotten eggs and makes me very suspicious of how it happened.

I know that there was an amount of money because I COUNTED IT, put it in an envelope and handed it to the treasurer. Our games and events occur when banks are closed, our league is run by donations and enrollment fees. This is a sad and crappy incident, and you all jumping to conclusions is really disappointing

And that’s exactly wat I’m talking about kim .people making assumptions about others in there comments that do nothing but cause negativity and others reputations and characters .everybody is a tweaker or a drug addict of some kind .or everybody that wrecks there car was drunk and on drugs .and so little percentage of the time are these people right .theres a story behind every post and most are not drug related meth induced knife was wheeling serial killers.so quick to throw misfortionate people under the bus and try to make look worse then it is .these comments plant suggestions in people’s heads and it doesnt take much to get somebody who doesnt kno better to believe these lowlifes in wat is being said. Certain people should be b as nd from m as king comments because th here only out to hurt instead of help things with there rude comments and l ack of compassion .YOU KNO WHO YOU ARE GET A LIFE AND QUIT BEING MISERABLE

another thing that sounds fishy considering the loose accounting, they know there was exactly $1000 in the basket? Hmmm….

The article is a bit vague. Was there anything else in the basket? was this loose money or in an envelope? I would like to think the money was double counted with another person, placed in an envelope and then with other items placed in the basket.

As the snack shack coordinator, I count the cash out of the drawer , place it in an envelope and give it to the treasurer who re-counts and makes the deposit.

A basket? How windy has it been for weeks? Not a box. Not locked. A basket, no lid, complete with handle.

ohhhhhhh Kayyyyyy.

I’m sorry it happened. The County is crawling with scum and nothing is safe.

I don’t know anything about the treasurer but it seems that some of these comments are unnecessarily harsh and critical of her character. Indeed this was a huge, unfortunate mistake but I am sure that she already feels just sick to her stomach about it and overwhelmed with that feeling of “if I’d only done this…”
Also, I highly doubt that she embezzled the money as some have insinuated.

Crossing my fingers for a happy ending.

Ahhh so many detectives trying to figure out what happened. I am sure they know it was a mistake and I would bet there is a change in cash handling that will occur even without your snide remarks. But it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what needs to happen. We need to kick in a few bucks for the kids of the community. So why dont one of you security specialists buy them a nice locking cash box

Trump parasites and traitors have been going to prison. That’s Pretty good. Too bad Dear Supreme Leader can’t join them. Talk about parasites, how many tax dollars has Home Despot paid? How about multi-zillionaires who just got a deficit-busting tax break loaded on our dying asses? You Trumpers love seeing America’s ass kicked. How many times does an average American meet a Russian citizen? Your Trump team was hot-dipped in Russians. The Russo-Republican Party, determined to strike within the U.S,

“Trump parasites and traitors have been going to prison. That’s Pretty good. ” WHAT IN H ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

FYI, it was the Russian Czar who sent his navy to intervene and stand between us and the British at the end of the Civil War. Russia has often been our friend and the Brits have often been our enemies, but somehow nobody notices these things because we are not thinking and looking at the facts in front of our faces. Nor are we trying hard enough to reason our way forward from the facts.

America has always been the death-knell of feudalism and monarchy. Every American born on our land is a sovereign in their own right. 350 million of us, all equal to the Queen. Imagine how that went down the old pipes?

And it was bad news for the Pope, too. How could absolute Papal Supremacy be maintained in a world where average people, even low-life dirty American Commoners without a shred of culture, could aspire to rule their own lives, consult their own conscience, and own their own property?

The Brits are ALWAYS at the bottom of the dog pile.

I would like to point out that this entire organization is run by volunteers and all of these volunteers have kids that play in the league. it gets a little chaotic when we’re all packing up trying to leave especially when it’s the same four or five parents that are left to do all the work. mistakes happen and we as a community need to pull together and help the kids out. not place blame or waste our time being keyboard detectives. if you think that we’re not doing a good job why don’t you get off your butts and volunteer! believe me we would love the help!

Nothing like a volunteer who bitches about the work. If it’s not worth it to you then quit. If it is worth it to you then quit bitching.

Do you really want strangers from the internet “helping” your kids? You might just as well leave them to wander around without any supervision at all. You wouldn’t do that would you?

Oh my God y’all like you haven’t done nothing bad yourself or forgot something or leave something behind it happened life is hard it’s for the Little League get real let’s help them out and donate some more instead of complaining about who could do what better Than the other. Let’s hope it gets returned and if it doesn’t let’s raise some more money to help out a little league.

Following. I’d be happy to chip in some funds for the kids. I’m not interested in who done what or why. I’m interested in making sure those kids get to play ball.

Hopefully this theft causes a change in how they protect the cash they raise. If it was counted and put in an envelope it shouldn’t be put in an unsecured place like a basket. It should be in someone’s pocket or purse.

The basket IS her purse. She also lost her wallet with personal cash and credit cards, her keys and her new phone. It was a mistake and she’s sorry.
