‘Post-Capitalism: Building the Solidarity Economy’ Conference at HSU April 26th-27th
The following is a press release from Cooperation Humboldt:
Local nonprofit Cooperation Humboldt, in partnership with the US Solidarity Economy Network, will present a conference titled ‘Post-Capitalism: Building the Solidarity Economy’ on April 26th-27th at Humboldt State University, sponsored by the HSU Sociology Department.
The opening plenary will be Friday, April 26th at 7:00pm in the Kate Buchanan Room at HSU with special guests Kali Akuno of Cooperation Jackson, Emily Kawano of the US Solidarity Economy Network, Jerome Scott of the US Social Forum, and Cutcha Risling Baldy, PhD Professor of Native American Studies at HSU.
“We’re so thrilled to be able to bring these experts together share their wealth of wisdom and experience with those of us on the North Coast working to shift our economy away from exploitation and towards a more cooperative model,” says Tamara McFarland, a board member and co-founder of Cooperation Humboldt. “We know this conference will inspire those in attendance to broaden their conception of what alternative systems can be created.”
A wide array of workshops will be presented on Saturday, April 27th in Siemans Hall at HSU. Topics include, but are not limited to ‘Solidarity Economy 101,’ ‘Introduction to Permaculture,’ ‘Democratizing Money: Public Banking,’ ‘Imagining a Post-Whiteness Society,’ ‘Humboldt County – Land of the Free,’ and many more. The full schedule will be posted at post-capitalism-hsu.com.
Admission is free for students. Sliding-scale admission will apply to non-students, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Free childcare will be provided, as well as lunch on Saturday.
Cooperation Humboldt exists to build a solidarity economy on the North Coast. A solidarity economy is one that empowers us to meet our needs in harmony with nature, without exploiting anyone; it puts people and planet over profit by prioritizing collaboration over competition and cooperation over domination.

Shak, wow…just wow. I’m really really hoping this is just trolling not an indication of the state of your mind. If it is, and I can get through to the real person in there, please reach out to a mental health professional. These are not thoughts that are based in any sort of reality that I recognize.

I honestly am just flummoxed. I knew you went for some far flung conspiracies but if you really are at the point you think that I am posting CIA instructions in deeply coded posts over months, I think you need to seriously consider not being here where I might manage to manipulate your mind. Far flung conspiracies – what century are we in?
The power structure could not do what they do if the masses removed their blinders. They do not want to see anything negative so they co-exist with the manufactured reality and pretend they see nothing, because it feels good and they can shuffle around comfortably numb in the commercial Matrix.
It is unfortunate that the path we are all on, that the planet is experiencing, is one of psychosis for some, frustration for some, and short sightedness or a resolve of limitations for others. A lot of life is perspective, even when truths are known. Logic and Truth is not the ultimate deciding factor most people use when thinking and acting.
It is impossible for you to learn that which you think you already know.
To most people and to most dictionaries, the word promote doesn’t have the same meaning as the word create.

Dear Hank- capitalism is the formalization of the natural tendency of humans to mostly care about themselves. Don’t you find it strange that socialism constantlybdemands sacrifice from the vast majority of humans while the few at the top live with limousines, mansions and servants? It’s just the words used to manipulate that changes. Instead of King, it’s Chairman. Instead of dividends, it’s taxes. Instead of investors, it’s party officials. The goal is always the same- those who lead do so to make themselves safer, more feared, more secure and they do so by controlling the vast majority. What makes capitalism better is that I get a chance to be powerful, if my bent is to do that, by either making or marketing my abilities and fighting those who would take that. Whereas in a socialist society, no one owns their own abilities to gain from them- you get to be safely powerful by suppressing or eliminating anyone who looks to be a threat by physical violence. In neither case is there the choice of being as powerful as the most powerful by doing nothing.

Im all for post capitalism but as Marx and Engels predicted that along the way many leaders would seize power of political movements and pervert them. The told us that these revolutions would be necessary but would not result in a radical shift, rather incremental steps of increasing socialism. I think we are hundreds of years from a moral economic system.
The effects of global climate change are going to cause lots of war, famine, pestilence, ect. This may delay human progress significantly.
OTOH a technological singularity, and loss of jobs to automation may have unpredictable effects.
See industrial revolution, luddites and utopian communities. It’s not really so unpredictable , is it…
