Beer Miles Are Like Regular Miles but with Extra Foam

The following is a press release from Humboldt Made and Humboldt Bay Marathon:

Eureka’s First Ever ‘Beer Mile’ will be Held at Halverson Park, Saturday, April 20th.
2 pm to 6 pm.

The Humboldt Bay Marathon, in partnership with local breweries, presents Eureka’s first-ever ‘Beer Mile’ at Halverson Park. Participating breweries include The Booth Brewing Co, Mad River Brewery, Six Rivers Brewery, Eel River Brewery, and Lost Coast Brewery.

For the uninitiated, Beer Miles are foot races in which contestants must consume 48 ounces of beer over the course of running a mile long race.

They are interspersed, so contestants will drink a beer; run one-quarter mile; drink a beer; run one-quarter mile, and repeat two more times until one mile has been run and 48 ounces of beer consumed. Fastest time wins. In an age of extreme sports, a Beer Mile begs the question; Why not?

Lest one think Beer Miles are just an excuse for binge drinking while playing at getting in shape, well, there is an argument for that. Beer Mile record times for men are under five minutes, and for women, under six! But not so fast. Points are deducted for leaving beer and even foam in the bottles so it pays to be practiced in both disciplines, running and drinking. And as in any organized sporting competition, the rules and regulations are strictly enforced. Rule #10 for example: ‘Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race.’ Lightweights take note.

Beer Miles are being held throughout the U.S. and of course, Canada, where, it turns out, they have a huge competitive advantage. They only have to practice the running part.

If drinking beer while running isn’t your thing, there will also be a Root Beer Mile for the competition-minded, open to all.

Additional Beer Mile sponsors are the City of Eureka and Humboldt Made. Humboldt Made’s Alanna Powell had this to say about Eureka’s first-ever Beer Mile event. “Most adults can appreciate a beer after making some kind of significant physical effort. It took someone twisted to conceive of drinking those well-earned beers WHILE running. Something tells me this will be a fun one to sit back and watch. With a beer, of course.” The City of Eureka’s Miles Slattery was unable to be reached for comment, apparently, he is entirely preoccupied with training to get into what he is calling ‘fighting shape’ for this event.

Proceeds from entry fees will fund the Humboldt Bay Marathon, a Boston Marathon Qualifying Event being held on August 11th, 2019 starting and finishing in Eureka, while proceeds from the beer garden will be split between the Community Access Project for Eureka (CAPE) Program and Humboldt Made; three worthy causes.

So come on down for just another fun, quirky day in Eureka, the city bringing ‘The Future of Sport’ to the unsuspecting.

🕯Good morning Kelley, I personally don’t drink but will support the event. And thanks for the link.

Although in good fun, it sounds like a horrible way to drink a good beer. Chug beer, run1/4 mile, try not to puke, repeat 3 more times.

I think I’ll just drink a beer and watch. I prefer to keep mine down the hatch. However, to make it more fun and the vomit more colorful, the beer should be a good thick stout or barley wine. Although, it’ll probably be a very, extremely, overly pale, light ale.

But hey, at least it’s after noon. I personally don’t crack a beer ’til at least noon, no matter how hard the work is.
