Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On March 24th, 2019 at 7:02P.M. Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a fire in a home on the 3400 Block of Pine St with three fire engines, one fire truck, two chief officers, and one Public Information Officer.

The owner was home at the time of the fire but was able to make it out safely without injury.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire involvement of the home. Due to the volume of the fire upon arrival, Humboldt Bay Fire crews began with defensive operations.

Humboldt Bay Fire requested a 2nd alarm and additional engines, receiving aid from Arcata Fire District on scene. Crews were then able to transition to offensive, interior operations after knocking the fire down from the outside, and subsequently gained control of the fire within 30 minutes of arrival.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time, but does not appear suspicious.

Damage to the home is estimated at around $150,000.

We are happy to report that there are no civilian or firefighter injuries to report.

Humboldt Bay Fire would like to thank the Arcata Fire District, Samoa Peninsula Fire District, Loleta Volunteer Fire Department, Eureka Police Department, PG&E, Humboldt Bay Fire Volunteers, and CERT Humboldt Bay for their assistance.

As always, Humboldt Bay Fire would like to remind the public to call 911 at the first sign of fire, and always make sure you know two ways out of your home in the event you need to evacuate.

UPDATE: According to Humboldt Bay Fire, “Humboldt Bay Fire has determined the structure fire at 3422 Pine St. to be accidental in nature, most likely caused by combustibles left on or near the stove in the kitchen. Humboldt Bay Fire would like to remind the public to turn off stoves, burners, and ovens when not in use, and to never leave cooking unattended.”
