Two tiny bear cubs were found without their mother near Hwy 96 in Siskiyou County earlier this month and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating.

“We’re asking for the public’s help,” the agency tweeted this afternoon. “Wildlife officers believe one or more persons may be responsible for separating the young bears from their mother…”

The two are currently being cared for at the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care center. Hopefully, they will be released back into the wild eventually like these two cubs in the video below that were found last summer in Tuolome County after their mother was hit by a car.

CDFW is investigating the situation of the two cubs found near Hwy 96. Tips can be shared anonymously with law enforcement by clicking here.

They don’t know what happened to the mother, the one that got hit by a car was last year in Tuolemne County.

So happy they were sent To Tahoe Wildlife Center!!! Fish&game can be known to just leave the Cubs even though they know that they’re orphaned !!! In this case they did a great job! There Is another Wildlife Rescue in the Ukiah Area that that can take in any orphaned wild animal Their phone number is 707-984-6363.

These Cubs are very cute now and it’s a tragedy that they are now orphans. Article doesn’t state the mom was killed by humans, but being raised by humans will get them killed later. Killed after they show no fear of humans and become a nuisance after being saved. Sad how that circle works.

Guest – In wildlife rehabilitation it is understood that the fear of humans is an essential survival skill for animals, and every effort is made to limit human contact and avoid taming the animals being cared for. Notice how the two released bears took off – they didn’t stick around playing Yogi and Booboo. I think they’ll do fine. Well-intentioned but untrained citizens who take in animals from the wild in order to save them are , unfortunately, the ones who do end up inflicting harm on the animals by training them to accept the presence of humans. It is always best to turn them over to a wildlife rehab center.

A fed Bear is a dead bear as they say.
Never leave food available for them at places of human habitation.

So happy to hear they were sent to the Wildlife Rescue in Tahoe!! Fish&game can be known to Leave Cubs even when they know they’ve been orphaned.in this case, they did the right thing!! there is a wildlife rescue in the Ukiah area that takes any orphaned wildlife and raises/Rehabilitates. Spring is coming so expect to come across some type of injured/orphaned wildlife. Especially fawns due to doe’s attemping to cross Highway. Often mom will try crossing road and will get hit. Leaving fawns orphaned. Here is the phone number 707-984-6363

My outfit had a bear cub mascot when I was overseas. He would suck on your knuckles. His saliva had anesthetic in it. Before you knew it, he had sucked your knuckles raw without your realizing it until too late.

Kym, it’s a matter of principle that personal insults, with zero other ideas attached and the inevitable piling on, is something that encourages more of the same. There is no “truth” in this any more than there is truth in racial or sexual epithets. The only way to keep comments from being a free for all battle of invective in permitting it, is to pick who it is ok to attack and who it is not. That leads only to creating people who seeking to be a protected class of victim, not in ending victimization, and a class of people newly feel victimized. And victims attract victimizers like crap attracts flies.

On a much less principled level, I’m not a child to be soothed by patronizing redirection. If you hadn’t done that, I would have let this go as another lost cause in the battle for principles over emotions. So it seems like philosophy has limits with me too.

I am ambivalent about using resources the way North Americans do to save any wild animal that isn’t part of an endangered species or ecosystem. We are driving species to extinction at an estimated 1,000 times faster than “normal” at a current rate of about 3 per day.
https://www.livescience.com/45964-extinction-rates-1000-times-normal.html
I know those bears didn’t do anything to cause that, and I think it’s valuable for us to exercise our compassion.

Humans have a massive capability to reshape the environment. And a massive ability to delude themselves about it.

If empathy rules the reason, then empathy demands incompatible actions. The empathetic judgement will find that, having empathy for animals losing their habitats, human encroachment must be limited. Simultaneously the same person ruled by empathy will also demand more housing be provided for people who lay a claim to empathy too. Empathy is only good for letting a human know there is an issue. It is a total failure when it seeks solutions as it only knows that empathy demands assistance even when that assistance is destructive. What is essential is that the empathetic person must learn that relieving their empathetically created distress is itself a selfish goal as it is futile.

Great comment. Self awareness is key. This is why it’s important to operate from and aspire to embody a vast stance of equanimity, not just in dealing with myriad other personality types but also in relation to the many internal emotional/ philosophical states of being, regardless of how compelling they are.

You can get a depredation permit to shoot a problem bear.

Shoot, shovel and shut up has better result than involving the government. Get upset if you want but why should you have to get a permit to handle a problem animal? If nothing else it’s just extra steps.

More cubs are killed by male bears than other ways. The mother likley died defending her cubs.

It will not be going extinct any time soon.
