A Worried Community Eager to Find Missing Girls

Humboldt County Sheriff Bill Honsal hugs Supervisor Estelle Fennell as a concerned community awaits news of two missing sisters, Leia and Caroline Carrico in the Southern Humboldt area.[Photo by Mark McKenna]

As another grey drizzly morning opens on the third day since the two young Humboldt County girls went missing in the thickly wooded area near their rural home, the residents of the small nearby towns and hills are heartsick wondering what has happened to the sisters, Leia and Caroline.

Social media pages carry prayers and offers of help.

People want desperately to help.

Local volunteer search teams, neighbors, helicopters, drones, canine crews as well as teams from across the state have been combing the areas near the girls’ home since the girls were reported missing March 1. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is currently asking that people stay away from the area unless they have permission to be there.

There is a way locals can help though. Lonny Whitlow, a businessman in Miranda has been asked to be the Food Coordinator for the search teams and their support crews. He is asking for donations to feed the volunteers. Local businesses have have already pitched it.

Right now Whitlow says he needs “any breakfast type item.” He said individual containers of juice would be helpful.

“We need minor things like paper towels and bagels,” he said. Though he said they have plenty of fruit.

If you donate, please consider minimizing trips down by sending donations with others. Please try not to impede the searchers. Get in and out of the command center as quickly as possible.

Amber Alert time? My heart hurts so much for all involved, sending prayers and love that these baby girls are found safe & soon. As a mother my heart & stomach are torn with sadness for these two children.

Honsal and Fennell are so Humboldt County in that picture. Pathetic. Street drug economy that was addictive to local government and businesses was great for decades and now finally shows the area and people for what they’ve become: Haggard and strung out – just as Honsal and Fennell so clearly show. An ugly and rotted show indeed.

~the difference here is that, SoUgly has a protected guarantee of freedom of speech.

Neither Estelle nor Honsal have delegated authority to call-up the National Guard.

The National Guard has no delegated authority to respond to The County calling for help.

A riot situation where the police have lost control -the Mayor teles. the Gov.

Is there a location in Garberville of a single point drop-off for supplies rather than inundated command. Got paper towels, toilet paper, tooth brushes, energy bars anything else needed. I be headin down the hill in an hour.

I repeat again shame on anyone commenting other than prayers or blessings. Keep your political, negative crap and armchair sleuthing to yourselves. If you ain’t out there you ain’t no expert and your opinions means nothing to us in this community.

Is Estelle searching or just conveniently standing around for every PR moment? Um hummmm, I don’t buy it, shame on you. Why aren’t you looking too Estelle, since you have access? Unlike the other hundreds of community members who wish to search themselves also & are not allowed to!

Shame on you for your negative and uncalled for comment. Estelle is not a member of a search and rescue team. She is there as a concerned community member who is our district Supervisor.

Hey. I just want to say back off Estelle on this one. She was right in there with the rest of us, worrying, crying, praying and you can bet politicking. You can bee sure that she had a lot to do with the helicopters and search dogs and out of county agencies being there to help. And yes it was our own that found the girls, God bless them, and we’re really proud of that but, I for one, really appreciate all the resources that were there for little Leah and even littler Caroline. Now, because of all of us they are home safe and sound. I am so proud to call southern humboldt my home

Thank You, Kenny. It is most awful to see some of the comments in this comment section, made by people who were sitting on their asses spewing poison about this place and the people who live here. I don’t get it that ms. Kemp finds it necessary to publish such unmitigated garbage while (local) people spent hours into the night looking for these two beautiful children. Thank goodness they were found safe (and hopefully sound). Willy van Doorn.

So glad theyre ok!
Good job parents, youve trained your girls well!!! Im a big sis and can totally see myself at that age not wanting to wait for mom to go on walk but knowing we would need rain boots&jackets, hats, and granola bars. What mom would do.
I luv that in most parts of humboldt girls learn the same skills as boys and are very savvy in the woods.
Now go buy whistles for your whole family and keep them in whatever jacket you go outside in.

I am deeply grateful for everyone that helped in the situation to find my little girls, but I sincerely hope proper phrase is given to the right people. The technical rescue groups and the volunteer search and rescue were the ones that had boots on the ground for hours and days at a time, along with local volunteers and friends and family, volunteer fire department and the local businesses that donated so much are the ones that should be getting the majority of the credit and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. I owe them all a dept ill will never be able to repay… A special thanks to my friends and family that refused to give up and had no respite the entire time and also to Luke and Justin who refused to stop looking against orders from their Commanders. These two along with my good friend Jessie we’re the ones that got us on the right track in the area where the girls were found. Along with Michaela a local psychic, whom I scoffed at and was proven utterly wrong, when she pointed out exactly where my girls were, thank you!

Its fantastic that your daughters were found safe!

Be skeptical about Michaela. Your personal observations, during emotional times, are the worst form of evidence possible. Those who prey on people in difficult situations with quackery are the lowest of the low.

I have to disagree with you in regards to her. At first I was extremely skeptical, she took us out to the place she felt the kids were at and we found no evidence to support it and it did not seem like a likely Direction they would go in. Then went on to search other areas. A day and a half later the girls were found in almost the exact location she said they were. The problem was they were next to a very loud Creek and we cannot hear them yelling at us though they could hear us yelling at them. They said they heard people yelling at least five or eight times and yelled back but we just could not hear them. It tears me up to know I was Within yards of their location and just could not find them, which cost them another night out in the cold rain. She also never asked for anything in return for her services.

When you’re in a situation like the one my wife and I faced over the last couple days, you will take positive, happy thoughts, prayers or any kind of voodoo magic offered to bring the result of having your little babies brought home.

Thermal infrared cameras used to image heat are on every Coast Guard helicopter. The images can be so clear that animals like deer or rabbits can be discerned from humans. The only thing that would preclude images is branches or thick over brush. If the girls went under a tree or some cover the TIC would not function. And it is difficult to say the girls would hear the helicopter and go to an open area. There are also hand carried thermal cameras I would think all fireman have in their equipment. I am not sure why the Sheriff would not want as many people as possible to canvas the area. With hand carried thermal cameras and two way radios any evidence can be radioed into a center. And the use of loud speakers when walking although with small children they might shout to answer. The worse case scenario is someone picked them up. Or worse yet one or both were injured. Another reason to have as many boots on the ground as possible. Not sure all this helps, but only to be informative.

It is heartbreaking how under-equipped our search-and-rescue teams are around here, things that you think would be absolutely standard they cannot acquire because of budget issues. I sincerely hope a larger portion of the new taxes levied against us will go towards equipment that will help in these kinds of situations.

Because I am grateful for all the help I received from anybody willing to help, I am going to bite my tongue on the feelings I have about certain agencies that came to participate.
I will say this, because of the bierocracy that ties up our local law enforcement, it was a real hindrance to their ability to be affected at just about anything. The attitude the sheriff presented to a lot of the volunteers that were just trying to help was astonishing, I understand that the situation needed to be controlled and we had some real issues with people interfering with the search, but the way some of the situations and some of the attitudes even towards the volunteer technical rescue crews made my heart ache. If it was not for the volunteers my little girls may not have been found alive…

We plan on doing one small interview with the news agencies to allow my girls to tell their story, because we think it’s essential that people know how to prepare their children’s for surviving in the woods /world. The first night they were out it got down to 38 degrees and it rained all night, this is something a lot of people would not have been able to survive, let alone two little girls on their own in the dark. Because of lessons taught at home and learn at Adventure Camp performed by 4-H my little girls survive this…. but I am now going to spend a lot of time with my children and we will probably sleep for a week in a nice dry, warm bed instead of a clump of Huckleberry brush :>) 😂😂

Maybe a little too Fearless, but we all learned a very valuable lesson in this situation. The kids from now on will be equipped with an emergency kit consisting of at least a thermal blanket, an energy bar, a whistle, water and a small GPS tracker, in a fanny pack.
