[UPDATE 10:03 p.m.] Mendocino Sheriff Issuing Evacuation Warning for Several Areas; Warns 101 May Close

Evacuation NoticePress release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office:

As of 5:50 PM on 2/26/2019 the Mendocino County Sheriff has issued an evacuation warning due to flooding along the Russian River in the greater Ukiah Valley area as well as the Hopland area. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Services, along with the City of Ukiah, Hopland Fire, Ukiah Valley Fire, Cal Fire, Coastal Valley EMS, and the National Weather Service (NOAA) Eureka Office has been monitoring the current storm as it passes through Mendocino County. The storm is expected to deliver a significant amount of rain in the Russian River drainage by 1:00 AM on 2/27/2019. This rain, in addition the rain already saturating the area, is expected to cause moderate flooding to the Ukiah area and Hopland. The river is expected to start flooding low lying areas as early as 7:00 PM and is anticipated to crest nearer to 1:00 AM. The flood waters are expected to recede by late morning on 2/27/2019.

This flooding is expected to flood low lying areas near Perkins Street, Oak Manor Drive, and Babcock Lane in the Ukiah area as well as State Highway 222 (Talmage Road) in Talmage, and Old River Road as well as Highway 175 in Hopland. There is a possibility that the water could rise high enough to cause a [closure] to Highway 101 in Hopland. The evacuation warning area can be viewed on the below listed map link.

This evacuation warning is designed to inform the public and allow preparation time to gather important and necessary belongings well in advance of an evacuation order. The public is encouraged to seek a more secure location, prior to an evacuation order being given, if they feel their current location is at risk of flooding.

The above agencies have coordinated to provide public safety resources on the east side of the Russian River should that area become isolated due to flooding. Evacuation Shelters are going to be opened at 8:00 PM for people displaced by flooding. There will be a shelter opened at the Veterans Memorial Building at 293 Seminary Avenue in Ukiah, and another at the Mendocino County Office of Education in Talmage at 2240 Old River Road.

There is also an evacuation warning for residents on Navarro River Road, in Elk, due to flooding along the Navarro River. The flooding along the Navarro River is expected to recede by early afternoon on 2/27/2019.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public not to drive across roads that are covered with water as the roadway can be undermined by flood waters and the damage might not be visible to motorist.

It’s nuts out there just drove south thru sohum and it is coming down heavy. Visibility crummy. And still some people drive without headlights! Wipers on/headlights on. California law. Rivers are all wide .

I was amazed how many people were on 101 in downpours with no headlights on. I turn my lights on&off at those folks, thats what i was taught to do back in my teen years, anyone else?

I believe it’s a new state law too. Anytime you turn on your window wipers you must turn on your headlights.

How do so many people not know this law?
Shouldn’t law enforcement enforce this law?
At least law enforcement should publish in print and online that this is the law.
When visibility is low and someone behind me does not have their lights on it is hard for me to see them.

Just run a wire from the headlight switch to the wiper switch. No other thinking necessary (you’re in a car, why think, right?). Wipers come on, lights come on. Works well with intermittent wipers also. Wipers on, lights on, wipers off, lights off, every 7 seconds. The flashing lights make you more visible too. Ask any bicyclist.

When you turn your headlights on and off it generally means there is danger ahead. Even though you mean well you might be confusing people.

I agree with you tho i was taught to flash between high and low beams to warn of accident or whatever.
Am curious what others were taught.
I realized that anytime someone flashes their lights either hi/lo or on/off at me i check my headlights first, maybe thats just a good rule of thumb?

FYI, if your wipers are on intermittent you can leave your lights off, otherwise yes, you have to turn your lights on.

Lights on off to indicate they need to turn on their lights. High low accident, danger or speed trap.

premature the Scott Dam holds back Lake Pillsbury F it burst than you’ll get wet 80500 acre feet of water this damn was built in 1922 and is structurally unsound PG&E was attempting to auction this damn off according to more recent reports is that they plan on possibly removing it. At times of high water like right now F this damn were to fail it could take out a lot of low-lying areas including Scotia the Riverview area parts of the 101 the creamery Ferndale Bridge parts of Ferndale and Lolita with possibilities of tremendous damage to human life and much more

NOAA is the parent organization of the NWS so it’s not incorrect to say that. Also..this is a press release from the Mendo sheriff, not something Kym had any control over.

Some history for you…

The Christmas Flood Of 1964.

“The rain was intense. It had rained over 36” in that December. From the 18th to the 23rd (5 Days!)it rained 27 ½ inches. Those are documented facts. Now for the bullshistory part, and I believe it to be true because I saw how hard it rained. “In the last 4 hours of the heavy rain, it rained 7 inches, and in one of those last hours it rained 4 inches.”
