Matt Sherman: Victim in Fatal Collision South of Weott, Family Man, Boy Scout Leader, Lover of Life
The father of Matt Sherman, who was the victim of a fatal collision south of Weott on the afternoon of January 17, provided us with his son’s obituary and photos “to put a face with the name,” he said. “For those who may see it, it may take some of the anonymity out of Matt just being a “victim” in an accident.”
He hopes that people might be more careful driving if they know about the loss of Matt. He wrote, “A careless act by another driver has taken the life of a person who was an integral and loving part of many people’s lives. I wish that this could cause others to pause and think about their actions and attentions while driving. Matt was living a good life that was cut short.”
Matthew Kyle Sherman, 44, was taken from this world suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday January 17, 2019. Matt was a lover of life with a smile that showed it.
Born on March 1, 1974 in Beaumont, TX to Kennith Leroy Sherman of Lake Jackson, TX and Carol Lynne Hardiman of Hobbs, NM.
Growing up, Matt was fortunate to have lived in Wyoming, Colorado, Alaska, Texas and New Mexico. He had many adventures in each of these places. He played football for Hobbs High School from which he graduated in 1993.
Matt started selling real estate in Phoenix, AZ and opened his own real estate office after he moved to Potter Valley, CA.
He loved soccer, hunting, fishing, camping, shooting firearms, restoring old cars and was an avid chess player.
As part of his family and community activities in Potter Valley, Matt was a Scout Master for the local Boy Scout Troop.
He was very proud when he joined his local Masonic Lodge and he recently achieved the degree of Master Mason.
Matt leaves behind four bright and wonderful children. He and Jeneil Schaum had Brooke Kylee, 19, and Ian William, 13, currently of Phoenix, AZ. He and Jyl Berryhill had Marilyn Rose, 12, and Kyle Matthew, 6, currently of Ukiah, CA. He adored all of his children and cherished the time he had with each.
He is survived by his father, mother, 4 sisters, 2 brothers, 9 nephews, 3 nieces, 2 aunts, 1 uncle and numerous cousins.
He is gone way too soon. We will miss him greatly.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Eversole Mortuary.
Note: an earlier version misidentified Brooke as Jyl Berryhill. Our apologies for the error.

RIP. Condolences to Matt’s loved ones.
I’m so sorry for this devastating loss. May his friends and family be comforted in knowing their loss is felt by many.
🕯RIP🕯🕊🕊🕊
Just know this accident really hit me hard. The scene is really close to my house and I drive that stretch of the highway multiple times a day just coming and going with my kids. I’ve heightened my own already intense attention while driving and no longer drive in the fast lane unless necessary to quickly pass someone since this happened. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Was the driver of the other vehicle ever named?. Usually both parties have been named in the past?
Yes. It’s in the linked article.
My heart breaks for this family.
So sad some punk kid driving a truck to large for his experience level took the life of your family member. I’m so sorry that happened to you and Matt. I hope more parents read this and adjust the type of vehicle they give their child. The average 20 year old should not be in a giant truck.
But parents look for the vehicle that protects their child, not that protects people from their child. Besides I doubt this parents gave him the truck. Nor that the only cause was the vehicle.
I think a stock Toyota tundra is anything but GIANT.
Really a very insensitive and inapproprate comment on an obituary.
~heartbreaking. Prayers and thoughts and sadness are shared in here -this will help his family and friends ‘get thru’ this time.
Blessings.
Rest in peace, Matt.
Live in peace you, the family.
Rest In Peace.
Condolences to the family.
Error on being North. It was South of the Weott exit not north. Please correct your article
Yes, you are correct. I’ve fixed it now.
This totally sucks, people really need to start taking driving more seriously, it’s a large responsibility and one of the most dangerous day to day activities..
Drugs, sleepy, distracted, speeding (or all four, likely in Humboldt). Doesn’t matter. No such thing as an accident. Everything is preventable or avoidable. Hold the other drive accountable.
You know what’s really needed is a center divider from the forks to redway ,I’ve pulled many deceased from vehicles in that strech that could have lived I believe if the were able to be contained to one direction of travel.
A center divider would obviously help but that shouldn’t excuse the man who killed Matt Sherman. That section of road already has twin sets of double yellow lines and a row of rumble divots. There is no excuse for crossing center and killing an innocent man, there or anywhere else.
We lived in SoHum in the 60s and people were dying on that stretch of road even back then, usually due to distracted and/or drunk driving. Sorry to see the trend actually getting worse near Weott.
My condolences to his loved ones.
Marilyn, Matt’s daughter is one of my best friends and I can’t imagine what she’s going through. Matt was like a father to me from age 6 to age 11 and I can’t believe he’s gone.
California’s got some of the worst highways. I have driven all across the U.S. a few times and most highways have a center divider or island in between, but not in California. I noticed that. So sad. Prayers for the family.
