Thats a hell of an idea….. except the transients that plague the towns will have that garbage right back where they left it in a matter of days. You all clean it up, don’t expect the ones that trashed it to do it, they are in need and couldn’t possibly pick up after themselves.Yes , clean up the mess again and ignor the actual problem of how it got that way right.

This is quite interesting! What about Garberville do we expect to actually clean up?

I suggest they start by cleaning up that awful hospital! It’s pretty horrible… Also, we should clean up those Motels! Having 24/7/365 Drug Supermarkets and “Produce Exchanges” in your town is probably illegal, and, now that it’s been nationally exposd on Netflix, gee, the DEA is probably on it’s way to Garberville right now! Who was it who decided that families should live, permanently, in Motel rooms, right next to the Major Drug Rings from Oakland? Also, the folks living in vehicles in the streets of Garberville, they are pretty scary! Might want to get those people to move along!

If you want tourists in SoHum, it would be a good idea to evict all those bums who are smoking dope on the sidewalks of your town! Also, it would be well to not allow Spanish Trimsients to camp in front of Rays! I should hope that those 10 foot fences that line the streets of Redway will be removed, since they make Redway look like a Polish Death Camp out of a bad WWII movie…

Gee, what else? How about some flower-pots? Maybe plant a few trees in Garberville, to replace all the ones that everyone cut down since they were blocking the “light” from their “victory gardens”… Maybe get the owners of the more marginal businesses to paint the exteriors of their stores, and, clean up all that dog poop!

Gee, I don’t think picking up the trash will quite be enough… Maybe haul the burned out motor homes away, evict the campers from the forest and off Estelle Fennel’s land, and from under the bridge, and, probably, you should paint some smiley faces on the outside of Jerold Phelps Hospital, so people might think it’s an actual health-care facility instead of just somewhere to dump the deceased.

Also, I sincerely hope that the Veteran’s Hall gets bulldozed soon!

Good luck Garberville! You are going to need it!

Is “Billy” that same old poster using another new screen name? Sure seems like it.

If so, sorry the hospital fired you. If it’s as bad as you claim, how awful an employee must you have been to have not made the grade there?

Wow, that seems like a “personal insult”.

One thing for sure, sometimes the folks in charge of a hospital tell lies. Sometimes, they can be crooked and incompetent.

At your hospital, the folks in charge often appear to be incompetent, crooked liars… If you ever actually had worked in a hospital, whether Jerold Phelps, or any other hospital, you would have been exposed to this…

I hope, if you need, somehow, to insult me personally, that you will take the time to learn something about the thing you are speaking about, since you don’t really seem to know just what you are talking about…

Also, it is best not to project your own traits upon others! You embarrass yourself!

So, right on both counts then?

Why pretend to be multiple people?

You’re right about one thing, “folks sure are sensitive”.

It is incorrect, IGNORANT and offensive to refer to a “Polish death camp”. All these camps were GERMAN. Built by Germany and staffed by Germans after the German invasion and brutal German occupation pf Poland during WW2. Poles were the victims in the German camps.
Please correct the bad mistake.

How about the drug deals that go down in Redway with that silver Toyota truck every single day. The walking dead from north of town needs to be cleared out until then nothing will change.

Credit where credit is due! You built it yourself, Garberville! You all should be so proud!

So, by all means, clean up your towns! In a month. Or never! Like the guys with the cardboard signs say, “anything helps!”

Remember, it’s extremely easy to poke fun at a place so completely pathetic…

I’m sorry you feel your experience here was so rough. I hope that expressing yourself in the comment section is helpful to you to release some of the rage you appear to be feeling. It sure is hard for those of us who love the area though. I can understand constructive criticism. But I’m not sure what insults can be expected to do, especially ones so frequently repeated.

If you could work to minimize the amount of insults to the town I love, it would help my soul. You often have intelligent observations that while I might not agree with them are still worth incorporating into my thoughts. But the slams against a community I love over and over again literally hurt me. And others of my readers. None of whom had any hand in your pain.

Please consider the effect of the word stones that you are throwing.

Ms Kemp:

While I am sure that it can be infuriating to manage the comment section, especially when it deteriorates into a mess generated by persons with little ability of comprehension, with overzealous tendencies toward prejudice, and those who are pleased to credit their own traits upon others, I do want you and everyone else to know that whatever I inscribe here, it is not a personal attack upon yourself.

I am as appreciative of your service, as anyone else, and possibly more so.

We need to consider the idea that some serve by cleaning up the trash, some serve by taking care of the patients in the hospital, some serve by educating the children, and, some serve by reminding the public of the sensibilities required for real life!

You, on occasion, and some other folks besides sometimes call my scrawlings “attacks”, but I regard them as a chiding expedition into the absurdity of “life in Humboldt”. If anyone thinks that I don’t have affection for the place, they are just wrong. If I didn’t like it there, I would most likely just shut up and forget about it! It bothers me that, temporally, it didn’t work out. It’s just the flow of things, and life, it goes from A-Z, not the other way, while we just have to accept the order the universe imposes…

Suggestions are just suggestions. People in SoHum, they are tough, and they have hard heads. My idea is that doing things the same old way, and clinging to the past, these are tendencies against progress, and, I happen to think that the people who have realization, self-actualization, and who are able to evolve while continuing to move forward, these are the people who need to be our leaders. In SoHum, you need the folks willing to “clean up” and who are willing to lead the “clean-up” to get out there and help drag Garberville/Redway into the future.

Dragging SoHum, kicking and screaming about it, into the future, is my actual consistent message! If you want a decent place to live, somebody will need to build it! Somebody will need to show the way to the future, and, the folks in the community will need to care enough to engage, and work together!

We all have to do whatever we feel moved to do. Your blog, Ms Kemp, seems like an appropriate vehicle for the words I care to share. We, believe it or not, as Editor and Contributor, are evolving, together! You know, as well as I, that some lead the discussion, and some recognize the logic. To the general public, my comments may not be appreciated or understood, but, somebody, even if it’s only one person, agrees and “gets it”.

Sometimes, we can get through. Sometimes, we need remedial advice. Sometimes, we need to be edited entirely, and, sometimes, a reminder of the “rules” is sufficient! Don’t let it bother you, it’s not always exactly the way it makes you immediately feel! Often, in life, that reactivity works against you. I have learned that it is better to incite with humor and sarcasm and an incendiary comment or two, than to focus upon a personal statement. I hope that my methods and tendencies help, someone, but, meanwhile, thanks for your guidance.

I appreciate when you take the time to talk about what specific changes could help but when you respond to a post about people working to clean up the town with “What about Garberville do we expect to actually clean up?” and then have another comment calling the town “pathetic,” it is hard to take you seriously that you want to help.

You might want to take a look at what you are actually trying to do and what is the result of hurt feelings.

All the people who work in so Hum- in the grocery stores, gas stations, schools, restaurants, banks, every business, this is the real reason we have a community. Affordable housing has long been an issue here, yet businesses and churches still have willing, capable, cheerful participants who love living here! The drug epidemic in America is taking a toll everywhere, and is most easily noticed in small towns. We do need to keep having clean ups& build a fun, happy small town again. Good wishes to us all!

I don’t see an issue with Billy’s comments. The clean up is a good start. Should be daily thing with merchants kicking drifters off of properties. He’s speaking honestly about horrible elements in the community that are dragging down the entire area, including quality of life and the economy. Areas here were once clean and peaceful. Not littered with trash, human trash and meth. Hotel drugs, transients, charity enablers and methies need to go!! Long overdue. Trash is a symptom, let’s get to the cause!

Garberville is pathetic?

There is nothing wrong with pointing out issues but insults are not helpful and…this is not Billy’s first rodeo.

Pathetic – Arousing pity especially through vulnerability or sadness.

I did not call it horrid, or even nasty. And I did not say “Garberville is pathetic”.

I could say, “folks sure are sensitive”, but my remarks are usually only partially or incorrectly regarded!

I did say “It’s easy to poke fun”. Apologies to all offended parties.

My name is John shelter I tried to bring my work program for the homeless to Garberville about 8 years ago. They said they didn’t need me because it was unproven. I’ve been in business now for 8 years my programs grown to where I’ve transitioned 159 homeless people from their tents into employment and then homes. If you’re a business owner maybe you should get a hold of the Chamber of Commerce and we can have another meeting so I can show everybody where new directions is now that we have contracts with the Humboldt county and California transportation. You can check us out on Facebook the people of new directions or just look me up John shelter.

NCJ (2010?) article on you, feet-first cat, is impressive. Thank you for your dedication and hard work in providing the help needed for those who appreciate the offer to reenter a sane environment. I’d love to hear more articles about you and especially by you.
While others fight over how to do it, you’re out there doing it.
While others adjust to stepping over the dismissive bodies on the sidewalk, you’re out there shaking them back into relevance to where they can achieve a life off the streets.
Submit some articles please so we can become more aware of your endeavor and the ways we can help. (without FB).
