Jeep Enjoys Seaside Vacation, Driver Less Thrilled

Sand eating a jeep.

Perhaps if the driver had brought in the Coast Guard, the Jeep would have been unable to resist attempts to remove it from the beach.  [All photos by Kory Beach]

A week ago, on January 16, the driver of this Jeep Wrangler drove onto Samoa Beach.

Possibly the Jeep enjoyed the sand between its treads and the fresh air because…

It dug itself in deep and before the driver could coax it out…

Jeep in the waves taken a day later.

the waves invited the Jeep for a swim.

A week later the battered Jeep is still basking in the sand.

As of yesterday, the Jeep was still enjoying it’s seaside vacation.

We suspect the driver is less happy.

Technically, yes. Its called the maritime law of salvage. Once something has been been in the ocean and washed back up on land. But 3 things must happen. 1 the property or cargo must be in danger of damage or loss. 2 you must be a volunteer, meaning fire dept, police, or any one being paid can’t do it. 3 you must be successful. Once you have successfully salvaged the property, you can contact the owner to have them pay your your “salvage reward”. If they are unwilling or unable, it becomes your property.

But has it been IN the ocean or just stuck on the beach? Pic #2 is a toss up.

I believe the trick to get out of the sand is to let the air out of the tires… out of high tide anyway. First try using the floor mats in front of the tires for to have something for traction.

Yep, I don’t get why they couldn’t get a 4×4 out. If you don’t have experience with driving in sand take someone experienced with you. There is no excuse for you treating the ocean like that and creating more trash for the landfill after that Jeep is salvaged.

It had a plate still on it the first day, I called it in, not stolen (as of then). It’s been partially stripped since then, tag gone now. It’s also been moved, it’s facing the other way… waves or a recovery attempt, dunno.

Yeah so if you actually look at the Jeep it’s oretty obvious it wasn’t driven out there and got stuck. It appears to be stolen and abandoned. It’s oretty stripped inside, no plates, looks very rusted through and beat down and also has a tow strap hooked to back which is also broken. It’s close to dunes and there looks to be a trail where it was drug through. Saw it on Sunday. Yes need to be removed ASAP as it did still have fluids. Wheels and tires don’t look like it was drivable before. I sent pics to a couple agency’s hoping someone with the authority and means could go haul it out before more shit leaks into ocean.

No mention of the the red Chevy truck that’s been buried stuck on the beach a bit down the way on the north jetty? It’s been there for 3-4 days now.

Hey broseph,

I’m not saying it’s on you, or anyone for that matter, but if I lived near there I would go empty the trash out the bed of that POS.

It’s an easy remedy before it ends up in the water and tide.

How often is this happening, otherwise?

Red truck was inundated and their tweaker trash strewn all around the beach including a bunch hypodermics. Head down to the beach to illegally dump your trash and lose your truck in the process. Now we all get to play and surf in trash, gas, oil and used needles.
