Passersby Rally to Help at Yesterday’s Fatal Accident Near Weott

Yesterday, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Zechariah Alailefaleula, age 20 of Redway, drove north on Hwy 101 in his 2010 Toyota Tundra. Just north south of Weott, he “allowed his vehicle to drift to the left,” according to the California Highway Patrol. His Tundra crossed the yellow line and struck a 2017 Toyota Camry.

After the crash, the Tundra lay on its side in the southbound lane and the Camry crumpled into the embankment on the northbound side.

“Joseph McKinzie and I were among the first people on scene,” said Bryan Enloe, a Humboldt County resident. “I started up some road flares while Joe went to check on the vehicles.”

Enloe said travelers coming on the scene began jumping from their vehicles and assisting.

“[I]t was nice to see so many people pull over and just started helping…” he said. “A couple people started directing traffic, and a few people busted the windshield out of the truck. The driver was able to remove himself. He had multiple injuries but appeared that he’d be ok after some time….One lady grabbed a blanket and another called 911. It was like everyone just saw what was and wasn’t being done and stepped up with out anyone directing people on what to do.”

Enloe said after doing what they could, he and McKinzie drove off. “When Joe and I left emergency services had arrived and were attempting to cut the [Camry,” he said.

As they drove away, “[W]e saw a guy at the bend who had his flashers on and was flagging people to slow down.”

According to the CHP, “The driver of the Toyota Tundra was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with moderate injuries, and was evaluated for DUI, which did not appear to be a factor. The driver of the Toyota Camry was also transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.” The victim’s name has not yet been publicly released.

From dispatchers, to law enforcement, to volunteer firefighters, to passersby, a community of people gathered to help.

Falling asleep can happen really fast, just a few seconds from being in control, to drifting off. It takes me alot of self control to say “ok! change of plans” and make the very first safe pull out when my lids get heavy. Trying to make just a few more exits can be enough to end it all.
Driving is the most dangerous thing we do… Actually it was until oxycontins came around, and only a couple weeks ago, overdoses became more likely than car wreck death in America.

It was raining pretty hard yesterday.
I’ll give the driver benefit of the doubt (no DUI apparent) and let the Experst and Courts decide guilt and punishment.

The police do not phrase it as “allowed his vehicle to leave the lane” when ANYTHING Including hydroplaning forced them to leave their lane. Allowing the vehicle to leave the lane means he crossed the line for no reason. His shitty driving killed an innocent person. What’s a kid doing driving an expensive tundra anyways? Kids should have small vehicles so when they fuck up they don’t kill someone.

The guy who caused the crash was still alive. The Driver in the Camry was deceased. Whoever is still alive gets medical treatment. The courts will work it out. This is supposed to be a civilized society. I get very upset about negligent killer drivers, but you STILL get medical care, no matter what.

Merriam Webster definition of Negligence: failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances.

Merriam Webster definition of Mistake: a wrong action or statement proceeding from faulty judgment, inadequate knowledge, or inattention.

The two words have overlapping parallels, but negligence is more exact in this situation of letting himself get into a head-on collision. He could be charged with involuntary manslaughter. Kym, if you can keep tabs on the outcome of this, that would be great.

Actually I do believe in accidents. They happen. But you do have to adjust driving to ambient conditions. Rain, wind, darkness, snow and ice demand defensive, slower driving which apparently native Californians are never taught.

Yes. And even then there are those sudden changes of condition like an unseen patch of black ice or, as I personally experienced, a patch of mud dragged into the road by logging trucks. Suddenly what was a safe speed changed without warning. It can be an accident for one party even if caused by another. But those incidents are much less common than errors due to complacency.

Eventually the science will catch up with it. Once enough studies have been done that a person’s behavior can be linked to drug levels. Because, despite users thinking that their use is invisible, it’s not.

“eventually” they will find out there is no correlation in the amount of THC in ones blood and them being impaired, because everyones tolerance is different. It doesn’t work the same as alcohol. One person could have very little thc and other cannabinoids and be completely impaired, another with the same amount, may show no signs of impairment. Driving slow and cautious isn’t being impaired.

But smoking a huge reefer and spacing out to a favorite song can be a significant impairment. Even in a tolerant smoker. Drift into the zone while Pink Floyd is playing, pretty soon you have driven 40 miles and can’t remember a second of it.

There are good people left in this County it’s so nice to see it cuz there’s so many bad people we used to be a community that did exactly what those people did yesterday they stepped in and they took care tell emergency Personnel could arrive this is what the county used to be like we were trying to be self-sufficient after the floods in the earthquakes we learned that we have to depend on one another and our neighbors it’s nice to see that happened

“there is so many bad people”… “used to be” this, “used to be” that. What if there are good people now, behaving well? Ignore that because your brain tends to remember the good times, and forget the bad? What if there were good and bad people back in the day? I’m calling Golden Years Syndrome. Things just are. No better no worse than yesteryear. Everyday is a new day, complete with benefits, and penalties. I’d say no matter if this were 1954, or 2019 people would try to help. just because there were good experiences when you were younger doesn’t mean the gods somehow broke the mold! that would be pretty self centered. It kinda makes it a backhanded complement to the good folks who just did what Humans do. Stop and help when the unexpected goes down right in front of them.

We need to have a conversation about the amount of people driving and looking at their phones. I commute every day and 100% of the time when I see a vehicle riding on the line or swerving within a lane, they are looking at phone. I’v pulled up next to people swerving going down the highway and observe them with their head down, looking a phone. At times its been so bad, I’ve honked my horn to get their attention. As one person seeing peoples heads down looking at their phones, there must be more of this going on. What can be done? I’ve taken pictures with peoples heads down and taken photo of licenses plate, but hat seems risky, me with phone in hand. Is observing a driver with head down, looking at phone worthy of a 911 call? Real question

No, I’m not accusing the driver of this accident of looking at his phone at the time of accident. I’m only using this chance to get my comment out there. Was he looking at his phone?

Honking at them, while they’re distracted can also cause an accident, although I understand your frustration. You don’t have to call 911, but if you got their picture looking at cell & license, then you can submit your info, online the the Sheriff’s office. I’ve done this a couple times, when cut off in the pedestrian crosswalk. The info was accepted & tickets were issued.

I think the best bet is a dash cam that captures the action and a plate number, and to just post them and try to get attention for the videos. A picture does very little for law enforcement most of the time. While it does provide some information. It doesn’t provide a very complete view of the incident.

After having a accident recently caused by other peoples negligence and then getting screwed by insurance its become a mandatory item for me. They are cheap and provide a huge amount of evidence when things happen. Not to mention can help quite a bit with insurance.

I still think the biggest problem is the complete lack of traffic law enforcement in this county. Short of patrolling for DUI’s, there is very little enforcement of traffic laws and rules in this county. It shows too in how people drive. People rarely come to a complete stop or correctly observe signs. If you are correctly observing traffic laws often people get impatient and do something unsafe to get around you often causing or just about causing accidents. Its obvious that this has become a real problem. Just look at the amount of fatal accidents and even none fatal accidents in the last 3 months. The numbers are through the roof.

I agree. I constantly see cars drifting left and right, or slowing down to unreasonable speeds then returning to normal speeds intermittently, only to observe them with their nose in their phones. Phones are a major problem. I would think in an incident like this a mandatory review of the smartphone should occur, with severe penalties for phone use while driving.

My guess is when his cell phone records are recovered, there lies the answer. Because of the new laws in 2019, more citizens will die from texting rather than talking on the cell phone. The state law has contributed to the problem since drivers are more prone to text rather than getting caught talking on the phone.

This and so many other incidents are why we need a center divide. We may be rural but with the amount of traffic and head on fatal accidents in the stretch between Jordan creek and the county line, we should be pushing the county to install k rail or at least the cabling that was put in between rio dell and 36. I drive this stretch of highway multiple times per day and am always in fear of drivers crossing the center line.

This is a state issue. The county has no control. CALTRANS is the agency to contact.

Mom , you are correct build a wall or a barrier between the 2 lanes of traffic. We need to keep out the people that want to harm us, knowingly or not, Good intentions or not . Walls make good common sense.

Might not work so well for some of the big trucks and buses that need to take wide turns.

From the photos the Tundra driver looks to be a flat billed bro, generally that species thinks only of themselves and could care less about anyone else. He’s already likely texting fellow bros about how epic the crash was. He’ll be in a replacement bro Tundra next week doing the same bro thing. Meanwhile the other guy stays dead.

Thank heavens for the courageous and compassionate helpers at the crash scene. If the trolls from this thread had been there, they would probably have thrown rocks at the wreckage.

~once upon a time, i posted a comment that said, “Sounds like two marbles rolling around in an empty can”, and it was deleted for being insulting. -really.

However, some of us in here (most of us), are repeatedly attacked by the words “lie”, “liar”, “lying’, or “lied”. Does anyone in here care to have this bullying repeated day after day, over and over and over and over and over and over?

It’s about being civil, it’s about honor, its about reputation:

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (1804)

On July 11, 1804, years of escalating personal and political tensions culminated in the most famous duel in American history: the standoff between Alexander Hamilton, a leading Federalist and former secretary of the treasury, and Aaron Burr, who was then serving as vice president under Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton had come to detest Burr, whom he regarded as an opportunist, and vehemently campaigned against him during his failed 1804 bid to become governor of New York. Burr resolved to restore his reputation by challenging Hamilton to an “affair of honor,” as duels were then known.

The enemies met at the dueling grounds near Weehawken, New Jersey—the same spot where Hamilton’s son had died defending his father’s honor in November 1801. (The loss inspired Hamilton to denounce dueling and lend his voice to the growing movement against the practice.) According to some accounts, Hamilton never planned to aim at Burr, hoping instead to fire a symbolic shot into the air and resolve the matter peacefully. Whatever his intentions, Hamilton missed his opponent but was promptly shot in the stomach; he died the next afternoon. Few affairs of honor actually resulted in deaths at the time, and the nation was outraged by the killing of a man as eminent as Alexander Hamilton. Public opinion turned against Burr, who was charged with murder and later arrested for treason in an unrelated incident. Acquitted on a technicality, he fled to Europe before returning to private life in New York.

@11:15 “If you can’t legislate morality, you certainly can’t lie your way to morality.” What? 6 y.o? I hope Kym does more about the unnecessary slander and name-calling. It doesn’t fit in here. It just doesn’t.

This is not what we’re here for.

I’m a friend of Matt, the deceased. He was a great guy and i will really miss him. He never had a traffic ticket! Zero moving violations. I know that his children and loved ones will honor his memory with good thoughts.
