Fatal Accident North of Big Lagoon
On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 15, 2019, a vehicle drove off US 101, north of Big Lagoon resulting in fatal injuries.
At approximately 1230 hours, 26 year old Tina Josephine Siders of Orick was driving a 2004 Ford Expedition southbound on US 101, north of Big Lagoon. For unknown reasons while negotiating a left hand curve she allowed the Ford to drift onto the west shoulder. She overcorrected by making a hard turn to the left which caused the vehicle to enter the opposing northbound lane. She overcorrected again and turned the Ford hard to the right. The Ford left the roadway and drove down the embankment where it overturned several times until it came to rest at the bottom near the shoreline. One passenger was ejected from the Ford and was later pronounced deceased.
A nearby boater, observed the collision and he rescued Tina Siders and the young child from the water’s edge. Mrs. Siders and her young son were then transported to the Big Lagoon Boat Launch. At the boat launch, the ambulance took over primary medical care and eventually transported them to Mad River Community Hospital for additional medical attention. Alcohol is not considered a factor in this collision.
The California Highway Patrol would like to thank all that assisted with this investigation including but not limited to the Orick Volunteer Fire Department, Orick Volunteer Ambulance, CAL FIRE, Arcata-Mad River Ambulance and the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office.
The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is continuing its investigation into this collision and is asking anyone with additional information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or to send an email to [email protected].

That’s a real bummer. I’m sure the woman feels terrible about this. The curves on Hwy 101 here in Humboldt can be very benign looking – easy to lose control when in the curve, even going 10 MPH over the speed limit – especially in a vehicle that does not hug the road well, something like a van or SUV.
I’ve carefully driven that general stretch of 101 twice in the last two weeks or so and each time, I’ve hoped for the best…what is it about that part of 101 that seems to be the site of so many accidents in recent years? Or has it been going on for longer than that?
As for the survivors, they are so fortunate that the boater was there and gave assistance. As for the deceased, tragic.
Humboldt County has so many stretches of roadway that one wrong move and the consequences are often fatal. 🙁
Our roads have eatin distracted drivers long before cell phones…. People underestimate the importance of maintaining your FULL focus on the roads….. I drive many of these bad roads weekly, I see people doing everything from talking and staring sideways, reading books, using tablets, applying makeup, and last but not least eating…..
Don’t forget the little yappy dogs sitting on the driver’s lap….
Way to go boater!
That’s sad to hear. R.I.P.
Big vehicle, young woman. Good thing it did not do a head-on with oncoming traffic.
Odds are this was all driver error.
Generally we never hear what causes this type of accident where a driver loses control of their vehicle yet the driver survives to tell the story.
Distracted? Why?
Looking at the view?
Fussing over a kid?
Eating food, oops pickle dropped in my lap?
Messing with their phone? Reading that so important text?
or
Excessive speed?
There just may be some details others can benefit from if they were revealed.
Phone.
I hope it wasn’t the child.
I know the have known Tin a for a number of years. I don’t have to ask. It was an accident. They do happen. She and her son are blessed to still be with us. It is very sad that someone died. They may have simply made the decision to not buckle up. Rip God bless.
Was it the child that passed away?
