Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Dec. 11, 2018, at about 11:10 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Old Village Road in Weitchpec for the report of a gunshot victim.

While en route to the scene, deputies learned that the victim had been transported to the Yurok Tribal Weitchpec Office for medical treatment. During this time, the Tribal Office and Weitchpec Yurok Elementary School voluntarily went on lockdown.

The California Highway Patrol, Yurok Tribal Police and Hoopa Valley Tribal Police responded to assist.

The victim, a 69-year-old male, was then transported via ambulance to a Humboldt County hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the head.

During their investigation, Sheriff’s deputies learned that the incident had actually occurred at a property on Lower Weitchpec School Road. Deputies interviewed multiple subjects, but no arrest has been made at this time.

The investigation of this case is ongoing.
