Puppies and an Older Brindle Pitbull Stolen From Miranda’s Rescue

Puppies chain link fence Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office seeks the public’s help in locating three dogs stolen from a local animal rescue.

On Dec. 8, 2018, at about 12 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Miranda’s Rescue, located on the 1600 block of Sandy Prairie Road in Fortuna, for the report of three dogs stolen from their kennels.

The dogs are described as the following:

  • One brindle colored Pitbull mix named Lucy, 1.5 years old, weighing approximately 55 pounds
  • Two black and brown Rottweiller/Mastif mix puppies, 4 months old, weighing approximately 40 pounds

According to shelter staff, due to medical care costs covered for the animals, the dogs would have been adopted out for approximately $400 each.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of these three dogs are encouraged to contact Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Greg Allen at (707) 445-7251.Dog on a blue leash

good questions willie. this story seems to have a lot of holes in it. maybe it was someones dog and they got sick and couldnt afford the medical help so they had to ditch them on miranda. maybe it was the previous owner after they got back from jail or some other situation. but very important how did miranda come by these dogs?

Right? Why is a ‘rescue’ charging to take in dogs?

Kathy, Miranda’s rescue relies on donations and adoption fees to stay open. If they didn’t charge to take in the dogs then they couldn’t afford to stay open. If they took in dogs for free how would they pay for it? Think about it for a nanosecond.

Isn’t taking in dogs without charge the essence of what it means to “rescue” them? Although it is unclear from the comments who pays these fees.

They definitely are a for- profit organization. Miranda pays himself a pretty hefty salary! They also charge up to $200 for them to even take a dog in! Plus, in the last few years I’ve had alot of people come to my organization for assistance with their animals medical costs due to sickness & spaying & neutering after being adopted from there. Not ok!

Sequoia Humane Society, I have no reason lie. They give the adopters the option to sign off on the dog not being fixed & get the adoption fee at a reduced rate. Which puts a strain on us and many other actual non-profits around the county. And I have also whitnessed first hand many individuals coming in with their sick animals looking for our assistance for vet care after they were told they were adopting an animal with a clean bill of health, which has not been true.

It’s a hard issue. I’ve heard some stories that were not good about Miranda’s rescue but they’ll accept surrendered dogs which no one else does. As far as I heard the animal shelter does not and many other groups won’t take pitbulls at all.

The real blame is those who treat their animals irresponsibly, getting them when they don’t have secure housing themselves or getting rid of them when their pets become inconvenient. If so many were not so self centered about it, the few real dire circumstances where pets need a new home would be few enough that it could be done more easily.

Thank you for letting us know then. Are there repercussions for Shannon then? Is there a State agency who oversees rescues like his? Does not seem right to claim an animal is healthy when it is not. Is the anything Sequoia can do to help him, or stop this from happening?

Comment above says Miranda’s charges up to $200 to take in a dog. Actually the “fee” is far higher than that. No other rescue I know of does that! There are lots of issues with this so called “rescue”.

No fault of Miranda’s but maybe in the future they could have more security due to dog thieves.

Adopted a cat from there and ended up spending a surprise $1K in vet bills to clear up medical issues due to being in an open enclosure with many other cats that basically gave one another every respiratory infection known to felines. It’s a tough issue. Did they save his life? Almost certainly, but they also seem to have made him really sick and perhaps use resources that might otherwise go to a more careful rescue org.

Maybe someone stole them for Christmas presents. I think that’s what happened to my dog a couple years back. Four days before Christmas someone took her from my back yard, rope and all. Fortunately she was stolen by someone in the neighborhood and found her own way back to me on New Years Eve, missing her collar and gassy as hell, but otherwise none the worse for wear. Whoever it was discovered why I tie her out, ha.

Where are the missing flyers on social media with pleas from the community and followers to please help post missing flyers everywhere on social media as well as all over the community? Why has the rescue not done that and why aren’t they offering a reward to try to inspire people to help get these dogs back? Where is the post honoring the dog that died? Do dogs just die there and no one cares to say anything or do a necropsy to make 100% certain nothing bad happened to the dog? Most people have to pay a couple hundred to get their dogs into this place including other dog rescuers so the proper thing to do is to let all their supporters know the poo dog died and reassure people with necropsy results. It is really worrisome that the stolen dogs could be suffering or are in grave danger and the lack of visible public pleas to get people to help turn in the thieves and or find the dogs is alarming. I feel so sorry for all these dogs if this is the best effort any of them get from this place. Hoping somehow the losers that stole the dogs are miraculously treating them well.

It’s been my experience that they charge rescuers $500 to take in dogs from Contra Costa Animal Service’s and other shelters throughout California. These rescuers are taking donations from the public to “help get the dog transported to Miranda’s” while using taxpayer funded vans from the county animal shelters. Then they also get adoption fee’s when they adopt dogs out to the public. Many dogs have gone “missing” from there over the years!

Yes difficult dogs, mostly pits, were brought into the rescue with the promise of rehabilitation for $500 a piece then they disappeared. Rehabbing one of these dogs would take months and much time.

Something missing from this story.. were those pups willingly surrendered by one party in maybe an acrimonious split? And then reclaimed by the other party? Can’t shake the feeling something shady going on..

And all the people that use this story as an occasion to slam Shannon Miranda have no clue.

He is a dedicated hero. You try to to that work . C’mon , you so smart. Get going on that.

i adopted a dog from them many years ago. they gave me the advice that when she was pulling on her leash, i should yank on her collar and choke her (with a choke chain) real good a few times to solve the problem. there was definitely an abusive aspect to the way they handled the dogs and did not seem kind or caring towards them.. more like rednecks handling livestock

actually these fees are pretty much standard for rescues..
I work as a volunteer for another rescue in mendo county(I arrange homes/fosters for pups and provide transportation)
way too many elderly dogs come in abandoned by their owners needing sanctuary == a place to die in peace.
and just way too many abandoned to the shelters period not to mention the strays that are picked up and cared for gratis..

and most shelters put down injured dogs.. the rescue system tries to save all we feasibly can and find homes for them this means ongoing medical expenses thing is those fees are not nearly enough to help and we wind up having to turn animals away when no space or money…

We in the rescue system try to save every dog we can.. relying upon fosters and donations out of our own pockets to keep the rescue pipeline flowing to find these dogs forever homes/fosters/sanctuary.

to pet owners in general.. NEUTER YOUR ANIMALS…lest they or their offspring dies starving in the wild(where we find a lot of owner abandons starving and needing rescue)..

just my .02$

Isn’t the purpose of the Rescue to place dogs where they are wanted, not hold them for ransom. Seems that goal was achieved here.

Shannon Miranda has No oversight! He has a government contract with Fortuna, Ferndale and Rio Dell. All dogs are spayed and nuetered prior to being accepted by Miranda’s Rescue.

Miranda’s Rescue has had issues with animals being harmed on the premises fo years. Where the hell are the security cameras!

Dog Fighting rings are infiltrating our neighborhoods because of the drug dealers and grow scenes. Shannon is well aware of this!

Why is there No follow up on the 14 out of 27 dogs rescued off a grow site in SoHum a few weeks ago? What happened to the 13 other dogs!

Shannon receives $1000s of dollars from the government, county operated animal shelters, other rescues, cash donations from individuals, not including his 3 Thrift Shops. $100.000 from a single donation a couple of years ago. According to the State Attorney website, Miranda’s Rescue brings in $100,000s a year.

Received $1000s for a dog shelter (Canine Castle) never built. According to previous volunteers the dogs freeze being next the river. Their kennels never dry up and the dogs end up getting foot rot.

Was informed by a long time community member that Shannon is breeding parrots and selling them in exchange for dog food. If this is true I challenge the Pet Store in Fortuna to come forward!

Shannon was responsible for getting a previous volunteer prosecuted under Gallegos because she took the cat to the Vet.

The stories go on about dogs, cats and horses being abadoned, farm animals being eaten. Told by the rescue he ate the pet pig he promised to find a home for.

Shannon states he is a No Kill shelter when in fact he is!! He is legally required by law to provide documentation explaining the details regarding adoption and euthanasia stats to the public. A record of what happened to each animal. How he is managing his money.

Many people in the rescue community demand an investigation!! A Grand Jury investigation is overdue! Also a report needs to be filed with the State Attorney General. The Charity complaint form can be downloaded.

I notice most of you wanting to “slam” Miranda’s Rescue don’t seem to want to use your name. There are a lot of accusations being thrown around without any proof to back them up! ‘I have heard” and “I’ve been told” is not proof of anything.
The Humboldt County Shelter does not take “owner turn ins” and the Humane Society now has the luxury to pick and choose what they take in. I worked at the Humane Society when we took everything and euthanized many, many animals. The Humboldt County Shelter is doing a great job but they are almost always at capacity with the strays they take in! They do not have room for your animals, you no longer want! They also have been able to keep their euthanasia at the very minimal, they can!
There is no such thing as a “no kill shelter”! All that term mean is they do not euthanize on site! Animals get old, they get sick and some are too aggressive to safely adopt out!
Really, you expect any “rescue” to take in your now unwanted animal for free?? Have you tried to adopt from any of the other rescues? If so, did you adopt for free?
As someone who has been involved with rescuing animals for years, I can tell you it not only takes a lot of money but a lot of hard work and heartbreak, to do rescue!
Over the years Shannon Miranda has had his rescue, I have heard all the same rumors you all have. I have even “bought into” some of them! I have since been to his rescue many times. There is a lot of time and money that has been put into it, to make it what it is today. Before you criticize it anymore, make a visit there. The animals are in large areas and very well taken care of!
No matter what, no one has the right to go on private property and steal an animal or anything else! A lot of you seem to forget that is what the press release is all about.
Not tearing down Miranda’s Rescue or any other rescue!

Last night KIEM ran an interview where Shannon Miranda said he has a mastiff who will bite everyone but himself. He said he will let it run on the premises at night so anyone who wants to break in better beware. The other interviews that I’ve seen with him is because he’s angry at something.

That he has a dog that bites savagely and indiscriminately AND he thinks it a good idea to leave it unsupervised at night shows there’s a serious problem with his thinking.

This does raise questions and anyone who cares about animals would want to know more. It is not that he does not render a service but that is not enough to be free from examination.

BTW all Guests are not the same person. This Guest is not the Guest in the post above.

Caretaker of animals reports animals were stolen.
Community rallies against the caretaker.

It doesn’t matter how or what we feel about the caretaker. The fact remains that there is another dog thief on the prowl.
Thieves don’t care if they’re show dogs or rescue dogs.

I appreciate the caretaker’s alert.
I understand the caretaker could have been more perfected.
I also understand that perfection takes time and even lots of money in today’s world.
The community members could reach out and help others install the needed security cameras, if they want to ward off future thefts of animal friends.
Or the community members can just bash the victim of a crime. Either way, the choice is ours.

Man your security cameras everyone. Or not.

It’s been my seven years of experience that the alleged BOS don’t reply – no matter what you say, do, or require (not ass-king).

Trying to communicate with the dead is a waste of time – i know this – but it doesn’t stop me. Rex occasionally says a word or two. When i told them they didn’t have any more authority than the ice cream man (no Bond atop their oath of office), he blurted out, “I like ice cream”. AS IF i’m going to drop the subject -Not!

I hope you were able to retrieve your (?) dog.
