Traffic accident

Emergency personnel extricated four people from a single vehicle crash near the second span of the Samoa Bridge west of Eureka that occurred about 10:39 a.m.

Two patients were taken out on stretchers but two were able to walk away once extricated. They were removed from a Ford Expedition that rolled over and off the roadway, according to Humboldt Bay Fire Captain Nate Baxley.

UPDATE 12:11 p.m.: The road is open in both directions. The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page reports that there were only minor injuries.

UPDATE 2:05 p.m.: Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On 11/19/18 at 10:39 A.M. Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported vehicle extrication on Highway 255 at the Samoa Bridge.

Two fire engines, a ladder truck, and chief officer were dispatched initially. Upon arrival fire personnel found a Ford SUV that had rolled over and was on its side off the roadway between the second and third spans of the Samoa Bridge. There were four patients trapped inside with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Initially one ambulance was dispatched. Due to the number of patients, a second ambulance was requested to the scene.

An additional fire engine and chief officer were requested to the scene to assist with the extrication and traffic control. The vehicle was in a precarious position on a slope and on its side. The vehicle was stabilized using rescue struts and straps to prevent the vehicle from moving as rescuers worked on removing the patients. Fire personnel used the “Jaws of Life” to gain access and extricate the four patients. Humboldt Bay Fire had one patient extricated within 17 minutes of arrival on scene and the remaining three patients were removed within 28 minutes.

Patient care was transferred to City Ambulance for transport. The Eureka Police Department and California Highway Patrol provided traffic control during the incident.

Humboldt Bay Fire urges everyone to please use caution when first responders are working at an emergency scene. Personnel can be working on both sides of the road and it may be difficult to see them around the large fire apparatus.

Glad the people were okay… slow down, folks!
By the way, the bridge is north and a bit east of Eureka, not west. Though i doubt anyone is confused.

It’s on the east end of the long east-west stretch of 4th and 5th (101), which run along a south rim of the bay. True, it does curve west as it heads north, so is more north than east. But def. not west.

Sure seems that way to me. You’re in Eureka and you drive on the bridge toward the Pacific Ocean. How is that not “west”?

People–look at the map, it’s on the east end of town, heading northwest to the peninsula. Basically it’s north of town, but starts on the east end of downtown. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Eureka,+CA/@40.8071733,-124.1662235,14.71z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d3ff83e6ff4ea7:0x2a860766b8290695!8m2!3d40.8020712!4d-124.1636729

It’s hopeless. You and I know that on a map north is up top, west is on the left, and east is on the right.

The bridge begins on the Upper Right corner of Eureka (that’s the NE corner), and heads northwest, ending due north of Eureka.

So it’s not really west, is it? Don’t believe everything you think!

Since it heads northwest from its beginning point, it would be appropriate to say it is either north or west, but northwest would be best.

Yes, northwest, looking at the map as was suggested. Topography can be confusing.

Was there any determined cause? Is it still cold and icy that late in the afternoon?

The vehicle involved is a 2nd generation (1995-2003) Ford Explorer. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/rollover/etc/before.html
