Missing List Jumps to Over 600 on the Camp Fire; Humboldt County Residents Are There to Fight the Flames (Maps, Video, Photos)

As order begins to emerge from the chaos of the early days of the Camp Fire, a horrifically large number emerged last night from the Butte County Sheriff—631 people have been reported missing.

Some of those will eventually be located alive but the number of people killed will also surely continue to rise. 63 bodies have been located so far. Three more were located in Magalia–“two inside structures and one outside.” Another three were located in Paradise–“two inside structures and one in a vehicle.” And the remains of one human was found outdoors in Concow.

And beyond the loss of life is the incredible number of lost homes. Around 9700 residences are now reported destroyed and 336 businesses that people had poured their hopes and dreams into are gone. That doesn’t even count the outbuildings crumbled to smoking ash.

The Camp Fire has now covered 142,000 acres and is 45% contained.

The Plan:

Last night, the fire continued to creep towards the northeast. Cal Fire said their crews “worked last night to continue improving containment lines through indirect methods and back-firing as conditions allow.”

They will continue to do that today.

Diana Totten, a well-known Humboldt County resident, who is supervising the Division in charge of stopping the wall of fire moving towards Stirling City, reached us this morning as she made her way to the northern front of the fire. Totten said that the Humboldt County Strike team, Cal Fire engines from Humboldt, and independent workers from the area have been very helpful in fighting the deadly Camp Fire.

“We’ve made a huge impact on how this fire has gone,” she said. “It’s something to be proud of that our small communities have made a difference. We’ve come from small communities to help protect other small communities.”

The Weather:

Firefighters are worried about a Fire Weather Watch that is predicted from Saturday evening until Sunday evening. But currently, the temperatures, humidity and amount of wind remain basically unchanged from yesterday.

The Roads:

Caltrans District 3 is reporting these closures: (For the most recent information go to http://QuickMap.dot.ca.gov)

While the first post trying to make a political jab is not rubbish and hurtful in the face of the level of misery the fire caused?

The first comment is not a personal insult, like tax payer’s post. It’s a statement of fact combined with the commenters personal opinion. Willie declares #45 is not his president; then tax payer attacks Willie personally with a jibe and an ugly meme.

I do hope you can see the difference. And BTW, firefighters and many burned-out evacuees are pissed at tRump not only for his insensitive and ignorant fire tweets, but also for slashing fire-fighting funding in California. See the irony there?

Also, if you read below, you will see that Willie-not-my-POTUS is housing 5 families who evacuated from the Camp Fire. He’s walking his talk, while you’re criticizing him (and me). SMH.

Make America great by turning it to socialism. Yeaahhh ! We could be just like the country’s that are trying to migrate here. Pretty ironic huh? No. We can’t all get along. No. There is not enough to go around. No. I’m not working my ass off to share with you. Close the borders. End the war. How about we house the thousands of Americans that just lost everything? How about we feed there children? Find them new jobs? Just a thought.. or we could just let in millions more to stress our already broken country

Throughout history immigration is all about a push, and a pull.

The push: The USA fought a proxy war against the commies in Central America and turned the region into an unstable, violent hell. Ollie North is a freaking war criminal that should have been hung.

The pull: Come to America. We gots iPhones and happy meals and the gangs will not shoot you in the head for not turning over your 13yo daughter.

Why is it that Trump supporters want to frame people who rightly criticize him as socialists? The fact is that red states suck from the government trough at significantly higher numbers than do the blue. The right to work states have way more people on government subsidies like food stamps. Please get informed. You guys are the ones who believe fox like it’s some ethical thing.

See. My point exactly! Economy. FYI. Obama killed thousands of innocent asylum seekers in the Middle East in his reign. YES it is an invasion. Let in 10,000 and 10 million will follow suit. Help Americans first!! Help these wildfire victims , then, and only then, should we even think about helping foreigners. Get a grip

Snopes said that it’s a typical format favored by those making stuff up. They rate that image as unquestionably false. It’s only use is to troll.

Such hatefulness is why Trump is President. No one believes anything anymore that is published unless it they want to believe it. Therefore, if something hateful is said, people just roll their eyes and step around the crap. Making stuff up is being a liar and repeating it is being a malicious gossip. Even though the name changes, the meanness is a black hole that lets everyone know to avoid it.

I read that the new missing person’s count of 600+ is so high because it was generated by law enforcement combing thru 911 calls from the day of and day after the fire . There are likely duplicates and those that will turn up as safe… (hopefully this is the case.)

Many evacuees of the camp fire are avoiding shelters due to the norovirus outbreak in them, camping in the Chico walmart parking lot, from which they are moving to the parking lot of an old sears in Chico.

Hope they are ok.

Thanks for the news.

While searching for images of the Paradise Fire on Youtube, I came upon this disturbing video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A58rYo_36JA

It made me remember the odd appearance of the Santa Rosa fire neighborhood remains—- the utterly and uniformly flattened houses with no sign of larger, charred, black debris. This video only asks a question, based on this same type of observation. Can our forests be so dry that the houses are burning at extremely high temperatures? Could this have been true in neighborhoods far from forests such as Santa Rosa? I am puzzled and concerned by the “war zone” images of the Paradise Fire. Any constructive, informed content someone can add?

Houses burn at extremely high temperatures when there is no intervention (i.e. firefighting). In “normal” house fires the firefighters usually arrive relatively quickly and get things under control. Unchecked, and driven by high winds, a fully involved house fire can get very, very hot and whole blocks of adjacent structures go up in one big fire that makes its own wind as well.

We are so very lucky to have these amazing people in our communities and representing us im Butte County. Diana is an incredible person who cares so much! Thank you to all there&to all whove kept our volunteer fire depts going all these years!!!!
I agree with her, small communities helping small communities. Unfortunately our small rural towns are becoming less and less common. As are places like Paradise where retirees and disabled folks can afford a place to live. Many of them had no car.

Its good to vent anger at the powers that be, and good to get to some pertinent questions we need to start asking through that anger.

Where are the n95 masks and respirators for those who have no “indoors” to stay in while living in tents in the worst air quality possible.

Where are the army tents with cots up off the ground with pillow and blankets.
Why are peoole still having to sleep in parking lots on the ground in 30° weather.

Why has the call for more doctors abd nurses not been answered by military medic dispatch, they are trained to work in areas where folks are traumatized and resources limited. (Try ordering some n95 masks on amazon to have them deliver there. They say no can do til next week. Pls try if you like! )
The medics are fried, most of them lost homes and probably family members and for sure some of their patients in the fires.

Uh what are they going to do about evacuations in the future as theres obviously no real state/fed plan for even a town the size of paradise&surrounding areas like concow&magalia. If there is its sure not playing out well on the ground. No big tent and cots and heaters stashed for such an event? No fund to pay hotel room costs so folks dont end up out of money and living in walmart parking lot?Butte county is one of the poorest.
We cant expect businesses to not make an income, lets pay them to house people for the first 2 weeks after a huge emergency. Simple little things make the difference.

Call your representative and tell them what you want to see happening. Where you want your taxes spent. Cant hurt, theyre supposed to be there to hear us so might as well try.
Jim Wood who was a dentist is in butte county helping identify remains through dental records, i called his office to say thanks.
We just got them their jobs for a few more years soooooo…..
