Memorial for Local Icon, Merv George, Held Sunday
Today, members of the community gathered to say goodbye to a beloved local musical icon, Merv George, Sr., whose band kept generations of northwestern Californians swaying to the beat. George was also a very respected Hupa Tribal Ceremonial leader. And, today would have been his 75th birthday.
Among those who participated in the memorial at the Bear River Event Center was, his son, Merv George, Jr., who gave the obituary speech. Here’s a small piece. Here George, Jr. talks George, Sr.’s many accomplishments including his work with the Smithsonian Museum.

He was a great man and he will be missed a lot by the whole community. We were so lucky that his family shared him with us. I am so glad that my husband and I got to know him and visit with him. Everytime there was a class reunion I insisted we go if Merv was going to be playing. I am sorry for your loss but he will live on in each and everyone of you.
A good man has gone ahead. Thanks for all the goodness you have created and carried on.
Ahhh, I so remember the early days of seeing the Merv George Band at Flynn’s Inn & The Keg. Those places would be packed every Friday & Saturday nights & we had a blast dancing to his music. Stagger Lee was his trademark song back then. A group of us saw him this summer in Old Town & are grateful we did. Wherever he was it was an event! He’ll never be forgotten – a wonderful man who contributed a great deal to his community & beyond – a true legend.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Merv George.
Such a big loss for all the local communities whom have been listening to him play for years. He played when I was in High School, I had just shared a story with him at Auto Xpo this last August about a song he played at FUHS when I was in school. Also shared some stories of Fat Alberts nights of crazy fun!!! Merv will live on in all our hearts and memoires for years to come! I’m so sorry I couldn’t make the memorial, my daughters wedding was over the weekend.
I do know that his best times were playing while his son was drumming…. such good memories!
Thank you to the family for sharing him for so many years…. he will be missed.
RIP Merv…. you were the best!
I remember him joking, that the reason people kept coming to his concerts in his later years, was to see if he could still play.
Miss you Merv.
