Fire Boat Fighting Fire on Daby Island

Fire on dolby island

A fire boat squelched a fire on Daby Island in Humboldt Bay this evening. According to scanner traffic, the fire was approximately 50 square foot at 4:50 p.m. and out by a few minutes after 5 p.m.

Firefighters struggled to reach the flames. The tide was too low at first for the Humboldt Bay Fire boat to be able to spray the flames. But, with some skill maneuvering the boat managed to squelch the fire.Daby Island

How did it start? Odd place for a fire.

They have to justify the boat by starting fires around the bay and that’s the safest spot in the bay. Why even fight that fire a good burning is what it needs

Daby, you say?? Fire caused by dabbing? Nope. Island named after Captain Stillman Burnap Daby who once operated a ferry crossing on the Mad River downstream from Blue Lake. He also owned the island and died in 1882.

Why spend time on the fire? Its not going anywhere. Make sure no one is in danger then let it burn. It was probably arson or homeless person got there some how and started a camp fire got out of control. Other than that why sped time and money once they make sure no one was in danger. Its not like it is going anyplce or a danger to structures.

I think the Harbor District has a $$$$ fire-boat that is unused.
Makes a good photo-op.
