Clarke Historical Museum Hosting Sixth Annual Archaeology and Cultural Awareness Day on October 20th

IT’S ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL AWARENESS DAY AT THE CLARKE!

Eureka – On October 20^th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Clarke Historical Museum in Eureka is hosting the 6th Annual Archaeology and Cultural Awareness Day, a free event for all ages. Visitors can learn about and experience local Native American culture, what archaeology is, and how to excavate artifacts responsibly. California State Parks, Redwood National Park, HSU’s Anthropology Club, and local Native American cultural practitioners partner with the museum to put on the event.

A Passport to Our Past, Present, and Future

An exciting aspect of the event takes visitors on an interactive cultural journey titled “A Passport to Our Past, Present, and Future” which showcases the Yurok culture through 10 display stations or “passport destinations.” Participants receive a passport with a page for each destination, which they can get stamped after participating in the activities at each station. The stations include Traditional Yurok Homes, Women’s Ceremonial Regalia, Men’s Ceremonial Regalia, Traditional Basketry, Medicinal Plants, Traditional Foods and Sustenance, River and Ocean Transportation, Yurok Language, and Contemporary Cultural Inspirations. All passport stations are staffed by members of the Trinidad Rancheria.
