[UPDATE 8:29 p.m.] Home and Car Destroyed; Fire Spreading to Vegetation South of Dinsmore

Vegetation FireAt 7:23 a.m., a report came in that a structure fire had started near Swayback Ridge which is north of Black Lassic and south of Dinsmore. Flames were spreading to the vegetation.

According to scanner reports, the house and a car burned to the ground

The incident is being called the Sway Fire.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available

UPDATE 11:05 a.m.: Southern Trinity VFD has a water tender there and the US Forest Service has a dozer there. Reports from people who can see the smoke indicate that the fire is likely coming under control but we have not been able to confirm that officially.

UPDATE 8:29 p.m.: The fire was contained at under five acres, according to Six Rivers National Forest District Ranger Dan Dill.

UPDATE Monday: According to Peggi Lawrence from Six Rivers National Forest,

The Six Rivers NF responded to a structure fire near Swayback Ridge on the Mad River RD at 0730, Sunday 9/16. The structure fire was a threat to go into the wildland. A number of engines with crews responded, water tender, other vehicles, dozer responded from the FS plus 2 engines/crews and water tender from the Southern Trinity VFD. Burned was 1 house, cars, a propane tank was blown. The fire did burn into the forest. By a little after 0900 they had a hose lay around the fire and began mop up. A little over one-half acre burned (0.569 acres). All resources released to home units @1425; places in patrol status. Cause is under investigation.

Looks pretty manageable at the moment. Haven’t seen any aircraft but there certainly is smoke rising from the south side of the ridge south of Swayback.

A neighbor who is onsite reports that the fire seems to be under control. I can only see white smoke from my vantage point just north of Swayback.

I asked at the store and was told that it’s out and they are sending crews home. Dinsmore store
