The Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce wants to share the beauty of Humboldt County! We decided to venture north for our next destination location!

This week’s “Destination of the Week” is located in the beautiful town of Trinidad and the exceptional hiking trail of Trinidad Head!

We hope you enjoy the read!

Headed northbound on Highway 101, road signs come into view as you near the next destination stop in Humboldt County California.  The temperature drops slightly and you can feel a light mist in the air coming from the beautiful coastline breeze.   Taking the final exit, you turn left to enter the small vacation town of Trinidad.  As you continue on the main road, you follow it around a couple of turns looking up to see a spectacular ocean view ahead!  With your toes tingling from excitement, driving down and around the last few corners, you pull up into a big open parking lot.  Getting out of the car, the ocean breeze dances with your hair as your eyes scan the scenery that awaits you.  To the left and right you hear the sounds of the water echoing against the back drop as it plays effortlessly against the soft sand.  In front of you is the beginning of Trinidad Head and the start of an unforgettable hiking experience…

The loop trail is at the South end of the parking lot and can be hiked in either direction.  The trail itself is half dirt single track, half paved switchbacks, and climbs steadily to the very top of Trinidad Head.  The ocean and California coast can be viewed along the entire hike and is absolutely breathtaking from every angle!

Some parts of the trail take you into tunnels of shrubbery and bushes and you can see hidden passageways that make you wonder what type of animals sleep there peacefully through the night.  This trail is also k9 friendly and you will meet many owners along the way walking their furry friends!

If your legs grow tired and you want to stop and enjoy the beauty before you, there are plenty of places to sit as you take in the amazing views!  All along the trail you will find benches and places that naturally offer up that perfect Kodak moment!

The weather can be a bit unpredictable on the coast so it is a good idea to be prepared for a gorgeous sunny day, or a brisk foggy morning.  Regardless of the weather one thing is certain, the beauty that remains here is something the eye will not forget!

At times when the ocean is still and things are quiet, you can hear sounds of sea lions on the rocks below as the faint cries from seagulls fly just overhead.

Once you have finished the 1 loop hiking trail, take a stroll down to the Fisherman’s Wharf to capture a much different and enchanting view!  Being so near the water is rejuvenating and seeing the timeless detail of the rocks and boats in between suggest a historical story of their own.

As you near the end of your hike, be sure to top off your exit by having lunch or dinner at the Seascape Restaurant that is right next to the Fisherman’s Wharf!  Offering a variety of great quality of food on the menu, the hospitality and service are excellent, as is the view from the window of where you sit!

If you are staying in the area or just wanting a place to escape for a little while, Trinidad Head is the perfect place!  Surround yourself with a sense of peace and experience the essence of “getting lost and found”, at the same time…
