Nurses Raise Funds for Humboldt Domestic Violence Services in Honor of Nurse Astraia Muir

This is a press release from the Humboldt and Del Norte Central Labor Council:

EUREKA, CA – The California Nurses Association joined forces with the Humboldt and Del Norte Central Labor Council to raise awareness and funds for Humboldt Domestic Violence Services (HDVS) in honor of Nurse Astraia Muir at the annual Labor Day Picnic at Sequoia Park on September 3rd. The Nurses will be presenting the proceeds of that fund raiser to HDVS Executive Director Brenda Bishop on Tuesday, September 11th at 1 pm in the Labor Temple (840 E Street, Eureka).

“We have all been in shock over the loss of our dear friend and co-worker Astraia since the senseless and violent taking of her life by her estranged husband,” said Lesly Ester of the California Nurses Association. “We felt compelled to take the opportunity at the picnic to raise awareness regarding the very real and persistent problem of domestic violence in Humboldt County, and in doing so were able to also raise funds for Humboldt Domestic Violence Services because they are on the front lines supporting, educating, and advocating for victims of abuse.”

“We are all saddened by the loss of Ms. Muir, but regrettably this scenario repeats itself all too often,” according to HDVS Executive Director Bishop. “Our mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and sex trafficking through services, education, and advocacy. We appreciate the Nurses and the Labor Council for continuing to team with us to raise awareness of the services we provide in our community.” For more information
