Fires can have many causes, direct and indirect. It’s difficult to find causes when the blaze is active. Also, firefighting agencies may have a pretty good idea of what caused the fire, but especially if it looks manmade, they don’t publicize it until they feel confident. At least, that’s been my experience in Lake County. Many of our fires in the last few years had human causes; a cluster of them in the Lower Lake area were arson but most all of them were caused by ordinary human error, something that might seem harmless at the time, like clumsy DYI wiring of a hot tub, grilling meat too close to the woodpile, or working on a metal fence with a metal hammer near dry brush on a hot windy day. We all have to learn to be a lot more careful in these dry, windy drought conditions, but on the other hand we all have done dumb things. We should really avoid suspecting conspiracies or bad intentions until we have evidence of it. Shit happens.

And be a step or two more careful when we know the landscape is a tinderbox!
Making it a point to be careful with that smoking material, be it a cigarette or a meat smoker.
