Press release from the Eureka Police Department:

For several months, both the Eureka Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing unit and the City of Eureka’s Code Enforcement team have received complaints from the community regarding two properties in the city. These complaints ranged from quality of life issues to suspected violations of various health and safety codes including hazardous construction, large accumulations of garbage, rodent infestations, fire hazards and unsanitary conditions, including a lack of running water and the use of backyard latrines. The residences are located at the 1300 block of 11th Street and the 2100 block of California Street.

Both Code Enforcement and the POP team have investigated the reports and have been attempting to address the observed violations with the owners and residents of the locations with little success.

Due to the ongoing violations and the presence of conditions which create a safety hazard for both residents and the surrounding community, warrants were secured and both locations were vacated and sealed against entry until the properties are brought up to code. Over one hundred cubic yards of garbage and debris were removed from the yards of these problem properties.

I have neighbors like that. They live without power and busted out windows. Poverty is very sad but there must be mental health issues involved too. I hope the people get some help too or that will just happen again somewhere else. Healing energy to whoever made that mess! PS. To anyone desiring to talk badly about these strangers, healing energy to you to because happy people don’t bash strangers.

Absolutely, no one should have negative feelings about anybody who thrashes their community like that. I mean, it’s not like these people had any choice, Society force them to live like that. It’s probably the white privilege or maybe the toxic masculinity that’s ruining this country. Taking personal responsibility for your actions was so 1776, we’ve obviously evolved as a culture since then and personal responsibility should be frowned on. But at least somebody took on the responsibility for them and did a nice job cleaning it up.

The complaints probably came from somebody who wants to own the property.

When people are old and sick and depressed, things can end up like this. I am cleaning up a relative’s place right now. I’m glad the city stepped in to take care of this and that those folks are no longer living like this.

where is it you think they live now? more evictions means more homeless. I don’t understand Eureka’s end game on this subject. its not like these are the only 2. California has many of these and that’s just one street.

Hopefully the community will step up and provide a helpful outlet for helping those who get behind due to illness or other tragedies. The rising cost of trash disposal has stifled many residents to the point of overflow.
In the past, the lively churches would send crews out to help residents and other churches restore back to livable. Painting, replacing windows and roof gutters, patching roofs, removing refuse, fixing electrical and plumbing issues, .. whatever was needed to help others get back on their feet so they could carry on from there.
Today, everybody is under the influence of robbing from their neighbors to enforce fines and penalties against those who are down and out for whatever reason.
We need a healthy dose of revivalism.
Love your neighbor.
Do unto others as you want them to do unto you.
I, for one, don’t ever want my neighbor to feel terrified of the future. Getting hurt, or sick is bad enough on it’s own, and nobody needs the added fear of fines and homelessness on top of it.
Helping others help themselves, so they can one day return the favor and help others help others, is the key to happiness.
That long post was my way of saying thank you for helping others.

Each city should have a sober apartment complex with constant chores, supervision and drug tests.
All of these social services spaced out every 2 blocks throughout Eureka could be centralized. So many benefits to everybody if the services offices were not spread out throughout tourist district.
I mean, just look next time, how many little 3 or 4 room govt offices are plopped in between breweries, bars, apartments, murals, stores, offices, dining. All in the hyped tourist district.
