Pedestrian Dead After Being Struck a Week Ago North of Herrick Avenue Has Been Identified

CHPThe California Highway Patrol has identified the victim of the August 4 accident on Hwy 101 north of Herrick Avenue. Officer Paul Craft said, “The next of kin has been notified and the pedestrian has been identified as:  Raymond Severns, 29, of Eureka, CA.”

According to an earlier press release, The driver was headed “southbound on US-101, north of Herrick Ave., at about 50 MPH.  It appears that a male pedestrian ran directly in front of him from his left.  [The driver] braked, and attempted to avoid the pedestrian, but he was unable to do so.  The front of his vehicle struck the pedestrian.”

The deceased was a relative of Ben Taggart who tragically was also killed while a pedestrian on Hwy 101 on January 5, 2017. The driver of the vehicle that struck Taggart has not yet been identified.

Article I read states the deceased jumped out in front of the oncoming vehicle……Sounds like suicide to me. His relative Ben Taggart that is named above as also being killed in a pedestrian hit and run in 2017 was mentally ill and was AWOL from a local mental facility at the time of his death (I remember reading about this when it happened). Maybe mental illness runs in the family?? Just a speculation but, seems very possible as a person in their right mind would not jump out into traffic anyplace let alone the freeway……
