Vision Loss Gathering on August 29 Southern Humboldt residents experiencing vision loss from macular degeneration, glaucoma, or other eye conditions have an opportunity on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 to get information and try low vision devices to help with reading and other daily tasks. Cedar Street Senior Apartments in Garberville is hosting the free public event in their Community Room, 725 Cedar St. The event runs from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Former Humboldt County resident, Patty Newton White, who has family ties to the Garberville community, has been visually impaired for 20years. She and her husband operate The Low Vision Store in Vancouver, Washington and travel widely in the Northwest helping people understand ways to accommodate for the loss of sight.

“Many people lose detail vision and just give up, feeling there is nothing to do once prescription glasses cannot correct their vision,” White says. “Magnification aids, both traditional lighted lenses and new electronic magnifiers, have improved greatly over the years and bring back independence for many people.” White will bring lighted, hand-held lenses in strong powers for people to try and learn how to use. She will also bring electronic magnification aids which greatly enhance vision independence. People will be able to experiment with specialized glare glasses which are life-changing for many people struggling with too much or too little light. “Different glare filters block or let in different percentages of the light spectrum.
